The following obituary is from the Middletown Ledger, November 08. 1917 and was preceded by a thank you note from William Gambrel's brother Henry and sister Mary Rogers:

William Gambrell Dies

After an illness of many months from dropsy and complications, William Gambrell passed away at St. John's hospital in Springfield Thursday, November 1, 1917 at 6 o'clock in the evening. The remains were removed to a Springfield undertaking parlor and on Friday were brought to Middletown on the midday train. After their arrival a funeral service was held at the Presbyterian church in charge of Rev. J.H. Norris after which the body was interred in Irish Grove cemetery.

The deceased was born near Springfield, Ill., Aug. 13, 1851 and at his death was 66 years, 2 months and 9 days of age. Practically all his life was spent in Central Illinois. For many years he was employed at farm work and for several years was a deputy sheriff in Sangamon county. Of late years he had made his residence at Pawnee until a few months ago when declining health brought him to the care of his sister and brother in Middletown and later to the hospital where he died. He was never married. His nearest surviving relatives are: a sister, Mrs. Mary Rogers, and a brother, Henry Gambrell, both of Middletown.
