Walter A. Culver
dead at 89

Walter A. Culver, 89 years old of R.R. 1, Athens, died at 9:00 p.m. Thursday, July 29 at his residence.

Mr. Culver was born in Athens on May 10, 1887, the son of James E. and Iona Johnson Culver. A retired farmer and graduate of the University of Illinois, he was a former elder of the Indian Point Presbyterian Church. Mr. Culver was a member of the Menard County Historical Society; VanMeter Lodge 762; Knights templar for fifty-three years and American Legion, Lawrence Rayburn Post No. 116, Greenview.

Surviving are his wife, Frances; one son, Alfred of Normal; one brother, John of Springfield; three sisters, Mrs. Cora Johnson of Athens, Mrs. Florence Cross of Decatur and Miss Edna Culver of Petersburg; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, August 1 at Mott and Henning Funeral Home with Rev. John Klueter officiating. Burial was in Indian Point Cemetery.

Culver is dead

Miss Margaret N. Culver of 103 S. 13th, Petersburg, a long-time resident of the Indian Point Community, died at 9:37 Wednesday night, June 9 at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, where she had been admitted as a patient only a few hours previously. She was 79 years old.

Miss Culver was born at Indian Point Oct. 3, 1896, the daughter of the late James E. and Iona Johnson Culver. She was a member of Indian Point Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are three sisters, Miss Edna Culver of Petersburg, Mrs. Albert (Cora) Johnson of Athens, and Mrs. Florence Cross of Decatur; two brothers, Walter Culver of rural Athens, and John Culver of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

The body was taken to Mott & Henning Funeral Home, Athens, where services were held at 10:30 Saturday morning, June 12, Rev. Kenneth Churchill officiating. Burial was in Indian Point Cemetery.


CULVER, LEONA HUTCHERSON

Mrs. Culver dies of injuries received in crash

Mrs. Leona H. Culver, 77, of Petersburg, died at 4:30 thursday morning, Sept. 26 at Memorial Hospital, Springfield, where she had been a patient one week. She was injured in an automobile accident on Route 29, at the intersection with the Indian Point road, Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 18, after which she was taken to the hospital. She was thought to be recovering satisfactorily when her condition worsened the afternoon preceding her death.

Mrs. Culver was born on Christmas Day, 1890, a daughter of Benjamin and Elvira Houghton Hutcherson. She attended schools at Petersburg, graduated from Petersburg High School in 1908 and taught school in Menard County for some time.

She was married August 27, 1912 to Harry W. Culver and they lived for many years on the Culver farm in the eastern part of the county. They retired from active farming in 1945 and moved to Petersburg. Mr. Culver died July 4, 1956.

Mrs. Culver was a member of the Indian Point Presbyterian Church, the Indian Point Willing Workers, Pierre Menard Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Petersburg Woman's Club and the Petersburg Unit of the Menard County Homemakers Extension Services.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. F. B. Selcke and Mrs. W. F. Shaw, both of Petersburg; one brother, W. Earle Hutcherson, Burbank, California; three granddaughters, Sandra Selcke And Sally and Jane Shaw, and one grandson, Stephen Selcke, all of Petersburg.

The body was taken to the Hurley Funeral Home where it remained until Saturday afternoon, Sept. 28 when services were held at the Indian Point Presbyterian Church, the Rev. N. Grier Hills officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

James Ely Culver, a lifelong resident of Indian Point, died early Sunday morning, September 19 at his home after a lingering illness of several months. He was born July 15, 1860, the fourth of five children of Jonathan S. and Elizabeth Brasfield Culver. He received his education at the North Sangamon Academy and later attended Business College in Jacksonville.

On February 14, 1883 Mr. Culver was married to Miss Iona Johnson and they began housekeeping in the community near where they have since resided. Surviving are his widow and the following children: Harry W., Walter A., Cora, wife of Albert T. Johnson, Edna and Margaret, all of Indian Point; Florence, wife of Carl Cross of Decatur and John J. Culver of Springfield; eight grandchildren, Misses Helen and Harriett Culver, Dorothy and Lois Johnson, Barbara and Joan Cross, Alfred Culver and Robert Culver. One grandson, Jack Cross, was the only descendant in this large family who preceded him in death. He is also survived by one brother, John E. Culver of Athens and numerous other relatives.

At an early age he united with the North Sangamon Presbyterian Church and for the past thirty-three years has served as elder. Mr. Culver has been president of the culver Farmers Cooperative Company since its organization, president of the Athens State Bank, trustee of the Indian Point Cemetery Association and served in various other community and civic capacities.

Funeral services were held at the residence Tuesday afternoon with Dr. E. W. Clippinger officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Anna King and Mrs. Maude Williams with Mrs. John A. Johnson, accompanist. The pallbearers were Claude Culver, Canton; John P. Stout, Chatham; Homer C. Kincaid, A. T. Kincaid, Springfield; J. E. Kincaid and J. Kennedy Kincaid, Indian Point. the numerous beautiful floral offerings were carried by Mrs. George Wightman, Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Harry Larsen, Lincon; Mrs. J. Kennedy Kincaid, Mrs. W. L. Meteer, Mrs. Carl Johnson and Mrs. Laurence Kincaid, Indian Point. Burial was in Indian Point cemetery.


CULVER, IONA JOHNSON

Ninety-One Years Ago

Mrs. Iona Johnson Culver, a resident of Indian Point until about three years ago, died at her home on West Douglas at 9:30 Monday evening, May 25. Had she lived until September 12, she would have been 91 years old. Her condition had been precarious for several months.

She was born at Indian Point on September 12, 1862, daughter of John and Elizabeth Gaines Johnson. On February 14, 1883 she was married to James E. Culver of the same community, and she continued to live on the Culver homestead there until she and her two daughters, Misses Edna and Margaret, came to Petersburg a few years ago. She was a lifelong member of Indian Point Presbyterian church and was active in the affairs of the church and community for many years.

Mr. Culver preceded her in death on September 19, 1937. Surviving are three sons, Harry, of Petersburg; Walter, of Indian Point; and John, of Springfield; four daughters, Misses Edna and Margaret, of Petersburg; Mrs. Albert Johnson, of Athens; and Mrs. Carl Cross, of Decatur; two sisters, Mrs. Cora Whitney, of Athens; and Mrs. Ella Council, of Williamsville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Mott & Son funeral home in Athens at 3 p.m. (D.S.T.) Wednesday, conducted by Rev. Ellsworth Young, and burial was in Indian Point cemetery.


CULVER, EDNA E.

Edna Culver
dead at age 88

Miss Edna E. Culver of Petersburg died Wednesday afternoon, September 7 at Sunny Acres Nursing Home at the age of 88 years.

She was born May 21, 1889 at Indian Point, the daughter of James E. and Iona Johnson Culver. She attended North Sangamon Academy at Indian Point and was a member of the Indian Point Presbyterian Church. She was a long-time resident of the Indian Point community, and had lived a number of years in Petersburg.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Albert Johnson of Athens and Mrs. Carl Cross of decatur; one brother, John culver of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 9 at Mott and Henning Funeral Home, Athens, with Rev. James Thomson officiating. burial was in Indian Point Cemetery.


CULVER, ALFRED A.

Dr. Alfred Culver

Dr. Alfred A. Culver of Normal, formerly of Athens, died Wednesday, July 25 at 9:10 p.m. at his residence. He was 66 years of age.

He was born February 5, 1924 in Springfield, the son of Walter and Frances Abbott Culver. He attended Athens schools and graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor of science degree in 1958. He received his docto of philosophy degree in 1961 from Purdue University.

Dr. Culver was employed by Illinois State University as a professor of animal science in the Department of Agriculture from 1861 until his retirement in 1985.

He was past president of the Illinois Berkshire Breeders Association and a member of the Illinois Pork Council and Illinois Spring Barrow Show Coordinators. In addition, he was the livestock judging coach for the Illinois State University team. He was a member of Indian Point Presbyterian Church near Athens.

Surviving are one uncle, John Culver of Springfield; and several cousins, including Helen Selcke and Harriett Shaw of Petersburg and Dorothy Marr and Lois Ahrens of Springfield.

Remains were cremated. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 11 at 10 a.m. at Mott and Henning Funeral Home in Athens with Rev. Chase Page officiating. Burial will be in Indian Point Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Indian Point Presbyterian Church.
