Death of Mrs. Barbara Knox

Mrs. Barbara Knox aged 52 years died of Brights disease at her home in East Athens Friday morning at 4:30 o'clock. Barbara Emery was born in England Oct 25th, 1853 and married John Knox in 1873. She came to this country in 1888 accompanied by her husband, They located first in Streater (Streator)and then in Virden and for ten years she has been a resident of Athens, Mr. Knox died January 1st, 1895. A neighbor of hers who has been neighbor ever since her coming to this country first in Streator and later in the home where she died, bears cheerfully the good testimony of the departed "She was a good woman, a kind neighbor and a devoted mother."

The funeral service was held at the Methodist church Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, a large crowd was in attendance. The services was under the auspices of U.M.W.A. Rev. C.F. McKowan officiating. Burial in Hall's cemetery.

The deceased is mourned by five children, Mrs. Charles Libby, Arthur Robert, Maggie and Edith Knox who reside in Athens; beside a host of friends and relatives.

Funeral of Mrs S. B. Shepherd

The funeral of Mrs. S., C. Shepherd was held in the Christian church Friday, June 7th at 3 p.m., Gilbert J. Ellis preaching the sermon. The interment was in the Hall cemetery. A large company of friends and neighbors attended the service.

The pall bearers were: Capt. J.A. Hurt, John Kinhart, Wm. Single, W. H. McDougal, Wm. Hurt, J.D. Primm, Sr. These are all comrades from the G. A. R.

Mrs. Shepherd had been seriously ill since last Fall with ulceration of the stomach and her suffering was intense. She was prepared in mind for the great change and her death came as a release from earthly pain june 7th at 8 p.m. Elizabeth Overstreet was the daughter of John R. and Rachel Overstreet and was born June 13, 1848. She was united with the Christian church at Antioch in 1865 and was married to Mr. S. B. Shepherd December 25, 1866. Of this marriage six children were born. These were Sophronia, Emma, Gertrude, Josephine, Lelia and Laura. Of these there are surviving, the husband, Mrs., Sophronia Bennett and Mrs. Lelia McDougal. There are also seven great grand children Roy Chronister, Fred Courtright, Marshall Bennett, Alcissa Bennett, Frank Bennett, Thomas Bennett and Elizora McDougal. These are with one brother, Mr. James Overstreet are saddened by their great loss. Mrs. Shepherd lacked but six days of being 57 years old. She was a member of the Christian church in Athens.

Mrs. Yoakum dead at age 68

Dorothy I. Yoakum of Petersburg died at 10 a.m. Sunday, April 22, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. She was 68 years of age.

Mrs. Yoakum was born September 19, 1910 in Pleasant Plains, the daughter of G.W. and Eva Reed Zink. She was a member of the Edinburg Christian Church.

Surviving are her husband, Marshall; three sons, Lawrence of Beaufort, S.C., Marshall L. and Phillip E. of Petersburg; three daughters, Mrs. Barbara Jean Wilson of Las Vegas, Nev., Mrs. Patricia Harp of Athens, Mrs. Susan Bell of Petersburg; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, an aunt and uncle.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 24 at Mott and Henning Funeral Home, Athens, with Rev. Charles Day officiating. Burial was in Hall Cemetery, Athens.

Pierce Infant Dead

Kimberly Sue Pierce, infant daughter of Michael and Janet Janssen Pierce of Springfield died Sunday, April 15 at St. John's hospital shortly after birth.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Candace, in 1974.

Surviving are her parents; one brother, Jason; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Janssen and Mr. And Mrs. Roland J. Pierce of Springfield; great-grandmother, Mrs. L. Jane Eckler of Athens; several aunts uncles and cousins.

Graveside services were held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday April 18 in Hall Cemetery, Athens with Rev. Edward Lang officiating. Mott and Henning Funeral home of Athens was in charge of arrangements.
