OBITUARIES



SWARINGUIN, JOHN THOMAS

John Thomas Swaringuin was born at Petersburg on March 28, 1859, and died at his home in this city on Wednesday afternoon, November 1, 1911, at the age of 52 years, 9 months and 13 days.

In early life Mr. Swaringuin was united in marriage with Miss Alvira Dyer. To this union was born one son who died at the age of twelve months. Deceased was the eldest son of Capt. T. A. Swaringuin, who died at his home in Springfield about three years ago. Surviving are Mrs. Martha Overstreet, an aunt, Mrs. Mary S. Bushong and Mrs. Rye S. Davis.

Deceased has spent most of his life in this city and was well known to everyone. He was of a quiet disposition and lived entirely by himself. Death came to him very suddenly on Wednesday afternoon about 1:30 and was caused by heart failure. An inquest was held by Coroner Wilkins, of Petersburg, and a verdict of "death by natural causes" was returned.

Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bushong�afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. �.P. Fischer, of Cantrall, officiating. Interment was made in the Hall cemetery.

GOLIDAY, FRANCIS

Athens Free Press

Miss Francis Goliday died Sunday, Feb. 5, 1911, at 2 o'clock p.m., at the home of her mother Mrs. Sarah Golliday of consumption, aged 22. The deceased was born in Athens, May 22, 1888. She is survived by six brothers, Isaac of California, Edward of Pleasant Plains, Thomas of Oregon, Ollie, Jacob and Henry of Athens; one sister, Mrs. Cornelia Goff of Arkansas, and her mother, Mrs. Sarah Golliday. The funeral services were held at the residence Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 7, 1911, at 2:30 p.m., the Rev. J. (?) Francis officiating. Interment in the H ___ [Hall?] cemetery.

LOTT, GEORGE

Athens Free Press, 1903

LOTT-At the family home in Springfield Tuesday, March 31, at 10:30 a.m. of old age. George Lott, Sr., aged 88 years, 5 months and 13 days.

The deceased was formerly a resident of Athens. He is survived by his widow, one son, Geo. Lott of Athens, and six daughters, Mrs. Thomas Tabor, Mrs. John Jordan and Mrs. John Fox of Athens; Mrs. Curtis Hager of Beardstown; Mrs. John Sexton, of Lincoln, and Mrs. Phillip Scharf, of Springfield. Besides the above he is also survived by nineteen grandhildren and eighteen great grandchildren.

The remains will be brought to Athens at 1 p.m. to-day. After services at the Christian church by Rev. H. T. Harrison, the remains will be buried in the Hall cemetery.

BEAVER, ANNIE A. MEECHAM

Mrs. Annie America Beaver, the daughter of Morrison and Melissa Meecham, a member of a family of five children, was born near Georgetown, Sangamon County, Illinois, August 21, 1855 and died at the family residence in Athens at 8:40 Monday morning, January 18, 1937, at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 27 days.

Deceased was married to David Beaver in Athens on March 2, 1873. To this union eleven children were born; seven sons and four daughters; three sons dying in infancy.

In the year 1890, Mrs. Beaver united with the church of God, at Springfield, Illinois, later transferring her membership to the Methodist Episcopal Church of Athens and has since lived a consistent Christian life.

On August 14, 1926, her husband departed this life leaving Mrs. Beaver then to share the home with her son Ezra who has done everything humanly possible to minister to the wants and needs of his mother.

Mrs. Beaver had been in failing health for the past few years, but not until about ten days ago did her condition grow alarming and on the above date, suffering from the infirmities of old age and other physical disabilities passed on to join many of her family who have gone before.

Surviving her are four sons, Ezra, Athens; Otto, Cantrall; Charles and Melvin, Route 3, Lincoln, Illinois; two daughters, Mrs. Alice Sealock, Havana and Mrs. Mamie Stiles, of Lincoln; also 20 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Michael, Springfield, and Mrs. Alice Gard, Decatur.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the Mott funeral home. Rev. W. W. Harding, pastor of the M. E. Church officiating. Interment was made in Hall cemetery.


BARNES, ADAM

ADAM BARNES DIED IN OTTOWA SANITARIUM

Adam Barnes, 62, Athens, died at the Ottowa sanitarium Wednesday, December 27, 1939 at noon, following an illness of one year. He had been a resident of this city for the past thirty years.

Surviving are four daughters, the Misses Nellie, Josephine, Anna and Antoneta Barnes; four sons, Stanley, Victor, Walter and William; one sister, Mrs. Alex Smith, all of Athens.

Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Friday morning at the Holy Family Catholic church, Rev. Fr. Lennartz officiating. Interment will be made In Hall cemetery.

ENGLAND, CLARA M.

MRS. CLARA M. ENGLAND

Born: Sept. 30, 1871---Died: June 1, 1922

Born at Kinmundy, Illinois, September 30, 1871, and died At the family residence in Athens, Illinois, at 1:30 P. M., Thursday, June 1, 1922, aged 50 years, 8 months and 1 day.

Funeral services will be held at the Christian Church Sunday, June 4 at 2:30 P.M. Rev. C. M. Day officiating. Services will be in charge of the Royal Neighbors.

Interment in Hall cemetery.

JENSEN, CAL C.

Newspaper Unknown - January 16, 1937

Cal C. Jensen died at his residence at 6 a. m. January 16, following an illness of about two weeks. He was 86 years, 9 months and 4 days of age.

He was born in Norway on April 12, 1850, the youngest of thirteen children, only one brother, Onen, nearly four years older survives him.

Also surviving him are one daughter Mrs. Daisy Short of DeLand, Florida and three sons, Arthur and Emery of Athens and Harry of Whiting, Indiana, six grand children and three great grandchildren.

When thirteen years of age he came to the United States with his parents and settled near Athens. This voyage was made in a sailing vessel; they were ten weeks in crossing the ocean.

Most of Mr. Jensen's life was spent in Central Illinois.

On December 24, 1880, he was united in marriage to Hettie Ann England, who preceded him in death, November 25, 1932.

Funeral was held at the home of Emery Jensen on Sunday, January 17th at 2 p.m. Burial in Hall cemetery.

WEBB, CHARLES

The death of Charles Webb of Springfield occurred at St. John's hospital, Friday evening, July 4, 1919, at 10:15 o'clock, after an illness of many weeks.

Deceased was for many years a resident of this city and was for a long time engaged in the livery business. He was a man of sterling character, upright and honest in all his business transactions. He was ever ready to do a favor to everyone.

During his long residence in our city he gained many friends whose sympathy goes out to the bereaved family in their hour of sadness.

Charles Webb, son of Mr. And Mrs. Robert Webb, Sr., was born in New Athens, Ohio, July 6, 1853. When a young man he came with his parents to Illinois where he has since made his home. At the time of his death he was aged 55 years, 11 months and 29 days.

On December 6, 1887 he was united in marriage to Miss Laura Doom. He is survived by his wife, one son, Louis, one daughter, Mattie, of Springfield, one brother, Robert Webb, Jr., of this city, three sisters, Mrs. J. T. Campbell, Mrs. Charles Stone, both of Athens, and Mrs. Kate Hamilton of Bay City, Michigan, two grandchildren, two half brothers and three half sisters besides a large number of friends.

The remains were brought to this city last Saturday evening and taken to the home of his sister, Mrs. J. T. Campbell where funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, July 6, at 2:30 o'clock - the fifty-sixth birthday of the deceased. Rev. C. F. M'Kown officiated. Interment was made in Hall cemetery.

NAYLOR, HARRY

Former Athens Man Killed in Greenview Mine

Harry Naylor, son of the late Thomas and Della Naylor, a former resident of Athens met death shortly afternoon Saturday at the Greenview mine where he was employed as driver. He was 41 years old.

The cause of Harry's death was the result of two cars jumping the track, pinning him against the mine entry. He suffered a broken neck, ribs and hip. There was not witnesses to the accident. It is understood that he lived until brought above and placed on a stretcher.

He was born in Athens and grew to manhood here. He married Miss Ada Warmouth, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. William Warmouth, mow of Tallula, former residents of Athens.

He is survived by his wife and a son of Sweetwater; two brothers, George of Greenview, and Dale of Athens; three sisters, Mrs. Tony Wasliewski, Athens; Mrs. Earl Phelps, St. Louis; Mrs. Ralph Wolfe, of Flynn; and mother, Mrs. Maggie Naylor of Athens.

Funeral services were held at his home in Sweetwater at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Frank ______? Officiating. Interment was made in the Hall cemetery.

MILLER, HENRY W.

Henry W. Miller was born February 4, 1873 at Oldenstadt, Germany, the son of Mr. And Mrs. Henry W. Miller. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith at the place of his birth. Coming to the country with his parents, he was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Reedburg, Wis. On November 22, 1894, he was united in marriage with Miss Amelia Witte. This union was blessed with four children, one son, Walter preceding his father in death on March 4, 1932.

For many years Mr. Miller was section-foreman on the North Western Railroad at Barr Station. Due to ill health he resigned his position and moved to Cantrall a little over 2 years ago. He departed this life quite unexpectedly at 1 A.M. Saturday, January 7, 1933, the immediate cause of his death being diagnosed as myocarditis. The days of his earthly pilgrimage were 59 yrs, 11 mos, and 3 days.

Since his coming to this vicinity he was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where funeral services were conducted for him Monday, January 9. Rev. E. C. Pautsch officiating. Appropriate hymn selections were rendered by Irene Dirks, Helena Engel, Henry Forden and Verne Maxwell. Interment was made in Hall cemetery.

He leaves to mourn his departure his bereaved wife, one son, Otto, section-foreman at Barr Station, two daughters, Mrs. Andrew Schnack of Quincy, Ill., and Ruth at home, one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Trenchard, besides a number of other relatives and many friends.

LOTT, GEORGE WASHINGTON

George Washington Lott died at his home south of this city, Tuesday night, March 9, 1920 at 10 o'clock, aged 73 years and 24 days.

Deceased was born February 16, 1847 at Wheeling, West Virginia, and came to Illinois at the age of 18 years with his parents, the late George and Rebecca Lott and settled on the farm where he died after a continuous residence upon the farm settled by his parents.

He was united in marriage to Miss Laura Walter's, April 1, '79, at Petersburg, Illinois. To this union three children were born, all of whom survive.

Surviving are two sons, Charles L. and Aaron, one daughter, Mrs. Newton Olson of Cantrall, three sisters, Mrs. Phillip Scharf of Springfield, Mrs. Nancy Sexton of Lincoln and Mrs. Thomas Tabur of this city and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the late residence, south of this city, Friday morning, March 12, at 10 o'clock. Rev. John Lemon of Springfield, officiating.

Interment will be made at Hall Cemetery.

POWELL, JOHN AMOS

John Amos Powell died at the Springfield hospital on Saturday morning, March 18, 1933, at the age of 77 years. Mr. Powell had been a patient at the hospital for some time, cancer being the cause of his death.

He was born in Fleming county, Kentucky. After his family were almost raised he moved to Menard and for a number of years resided in this city, serving as city marshall for some time.

He is survived by three sons, Joe of Cantrall; Everett of Sherman, and Amos of Athens.

Funeral services were held at the Vancil undertaking parlors in Springfield at 10:30 Tuesday morning. Lewis P. Fisher officiating.

Interment was made in the Hall cemetery, Athens.

HENDERSON, HOPE LORENE

Hope Lorene Henderson was born September 21, 1919 and died March 7, 1920, of spinal meningitis at the age of 5 months and 14 days.

Little Hope had been lovingly cared for by her grandmother, Mrs. Harriet Henderson of Jacksonville, since she was six weeks old because of her mother's illness. The little darling died after an illness of one week. Surviving are her parents and one brother, Charles Edward, aged 3 years.

She was buried from the home of her parents, Ervin and Alma Ahrenkeil Henderson south of Athens, Monday afternoon, March 8. Rev. C. F. M'Kown officiating. The interment were made in the Hall cemetery.

BASSO, JAMES

James Basso, a well known and highly respected citizen of Athens, died at the home of his son, Joseph in Gillespie, Sunday afternoon, October 20, 1929, at 4:30 o'clock, following a stroke of paralysis on the preceding Wednesday. He was aged 83 years 4 months and 2 days. His wife preceded him in death about five years ago.

He is survived by six sons, Joe of Gillespie; Samuel and Thomas of Springfield; John, Henry and Mike of this city and two brothers, Dominik of Henderson and Joe of Chicago. He is also survived by nineteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

The remains were brought to home of his son, John Basso, in this city last Sunday night, and funeral services were held at the Holy Family church, Tuesday morning, October 22, at 9:30 o'clock, Rev. Father Carey officiating. Interment was made in the Hall cemetery.

RODEMER, KATHERINE GEORG

The death of Mrs. Katherine Georg Rodemer occurred at the Springfield hospital Friday evening, September 12, 1924, aged 53 years, 1 month and 16 days. She had been in poor health for several months and was only recently taken to the hospital where she underwent a surgical operation, but owing to her weakened condition she failed to rally and passed away as above noted.

Deceased was born at Lichtenrote, Hessen, German, July 27, 1871. She came to America in 1888 and was married to Carl Rodemer, May 29, 1889.

To this union eleven children were born, nine of whom survive. One daughter, Freda, died in 1895 and one son, Earl, died in 1910.

Surviving are her husband, Carl Rodemer, and children: Mrs. Emma Johnson of Greenview, Carl, William and Henry of Greenview, Otto, John, Margaret, Amelia and Martha at home; one sister, Mrs. Charles Ruppel of Virginia, Illinois; one brother, George Georg in Germany, also five grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Emanuel Lutheran church, Monday afternoon, September 15 at 2 o'clock. Rev. J. G. Kaiser officiating. The services were very largely attended. This outpouring of neighbors and friends was a tribute to the love and respect in which the deceased was held by the people of this community and the surrounding territory. A quartette - Miss Lydia Hackman, Mrs. Ed Engel, J. J. Reinders and Henry Ferden - rendered beautiful selections and the Ladies Aid in a body sang a hymn in honor of their departed member.

Interment was made in Hall cemetery.
