BATTERTON, LENA STRUBLE HILL

Newspaper Unknown - August 1936

MRS. MURRAY BATTERTON DIES IN CONNECTICUT

Was Former Resident And Primary Teacher in Grade School

Mrs. Lena Hill Struble Batterton, daughter of the late Phillip and Hattie Nance Struble, was born near Petersburg, Illinois, December 22, 1870, and passed away at a hospital in New Haven, Connecticut, at 1:49 a.m. Sunday, August 23, 1936 at the age of 65 years, 8 months and 1 day.

Mrs. Batterton received her education in the schools of Menard County and attended Normal at Bushnell and Charleston.

She taught school previous to her marriage, and after her children were grown, having spent the past nine years of her life as primary teacher at the local grade school, where besides teaching, she was always doing some motherly act for the little tots who came under her supervision. These little men and women as Mrs. Batterton sometimes called them had learned to regard her as a necessary fixture in their young lives. Most every evening at the close of school hours, she could be seen standing in the doorway, waving good bye to the children just before they disappeared from sight.

Deceased was married to Murray F. Batterton, August 16, 1893 in the Struble home on Rock Creek. After marriage, the couple resided for several years on a farm in the same neighborhood.

To this union five children were born; two sons and three daughters, all of whom survive.

Mrs. Batterton united with the Christian Church at Petersburg in her youth and has always lived a consistent Christian life. She was a member of the teaching staff of the local Christian Church. She thoroughly taught and practiced her religion.

Besides being a teacher it has been said of Mrs. Batterton that she was an educator as well. She was well posted and could discuss matters of importance along various lines.

She was of a cheerful, lovable disposition; always seeing the good points about every one who came under her observation.

With the exception of three years spent in Macoupin County, she spent her entire life in Menard County, within a radius of ten miles.

Mrs. Batterton resigned as teacher of the primary grade last Christmas because of failing health and left for the East where she consulted eminent specialists. After taking treatment since last January she felt very much improved and in June took a month's pleasure trip with members of her family through the eastern states which she very much enjoyed.

She had been removed to the hospital but one week when the grim reaper called and ended a very busy career.

Surviving her besides the husband are the five children; Struble of Seattle, Washington; Richard of Denver, Colorado; Harriett and Barbara of New Haven, Connecticut; and Mrs. Adeline Shock of Winterhaven, Florida.

Funeral services were held from the local Christian Church at 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Donald J. Finley assisted by Rev. Cronkhite of the Petersburg Christian Church officiating. Interment was made in Hall cemetery.
