DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER
Isaac Cogdal died at his home in Rock Creek precinct Saturday morning, July 29, 1887, aged 75 years. He was buried Sunday in the graveyard near his residence.
Mr. Cogdal was a son of Joseph and Lucy (Sothern) Cogdal, who were among the first settlers of this county. Their advent to this county dates back to 1823. They settled near where Mr. Cogdal resided at the time of his death, at Lloyd, and there passed their lives. His father died in 1828 and his mother survived until 1846. Mr. Cogdal was born in Kentucky Sept. 16, 1812. During early life he learned the trade of stone and brick mason, which he followed for many years. When a young man, Abraham Lincoln became his warm friend, and they frequently advised each other. After Lincoln became a prominent lawyer he advised Mr. Cogdal to study law under his instruction, which he did, and was admitted to the bar in 1860, since which time he occasionally practiced law and superintended his farm. Mr. Cogdal was a man of ability and high standing. He was married first to Miss Mary, daughter Elijah Houghton, Nov. 1, 1833. She died Sept. 24, 1847, leaving five children, two of whom are dead. He married his present wife July 22, 1848. She was a Miss Sarah Whitton. They had one child. Mr. Cogdal was a gentleman highly esteemed and his death is greatly regretted by a large circle of friends. "Peace to this ashes."
