BAKER, FLORENCE I. WAGENER

Florence I. Baker, 81, died at 9:39 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at Boyd Memorial Hospital.

She was born July 4, 1923, in Greene County to Sarah and Frank Wagener.

She married Glen E. Baker on Feb. 5, 1947, in Carrollton. He survives.

She had worked as a bookkeeper and a statistician. She was a member of the Greenfield Tiger Backers. She enjoyed her family and was proud of their accomplishments.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter and her husband, Kathleen and JerryStrasser of Alton; three sons and their wives, W. A. and Nancy Baker of Midland, Texas, Robert and Carmen Baker of Greenfield and Roger and Suzanne Baker of Gages Lake, Ill; 11 grandchildren, Jeff Baker, Derek Baker, Kevin Strasser, Sara Geisler, Philip Strasser, Todd Baker, Whitney Baker, Jacob Stewart, Evan Baker, Eric Baker and Emmett Baker; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Koster of Belleville; and one brother, Clement Wagener of Carrollton.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Shields and Mary Koster, and one brother, Frank Wagener.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Shields Memorial Home, where the Rev. Garrett Melvin will conduct services at 10 a.m. Monday.

Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Greenfield.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart and Lung Associations and Breast Cancer Association.


BAKER, PEGGY E. HOWARD

Peggy E. Baker, 60, of Brighton, died at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1988, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Alton.

She had been a meat wrapper for local Kroger stores.

Born in Greenfield, she was the daughter of the late Ward and Rosalie (Walihan) Howard.

On June 20, 1948, she married Eldon Baker, in Chesterfield, and he survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Vicky Baker of Brighton, four sons, Tom and Bob Fischer and Mike Baker, all of Washington, IL., and Dennis Baker of Brighton; 13 grand-children; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Bramley of Brighton and Elsie Imel of Bethalto; and four brothers, Dude and Gary Howard, both of St. Louis, Wally Howard of El Paso, TX., and Jack Howard of Medora.

A brother, John Robert Howard; and a sister, Josephine "Jo" Shafer, preceded her in death.

Visitation was held Friday at the Targetta Funeral Home in Brighton, where services were held Saturday.

Burial was in Greenfield Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.


COSTELLO, CHRISTINE MARY GREENE

GREENFIELD - Christine Mary Costello, 79, of Greenfield died at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton.

She was born April 20, 1909, in Greene County, daughter of the late Phillip and Nora Scroggins Greene. She married Raymond Paul Costello in Carrollton Sept. 10, 1927, and he died April 27, 1980.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ruby Cope of Carlinville and Mrs. Marlene Meneley of Greenfield; six sons, Philip of Greenfield, Wayne of Charleston, S.C., Larry of Hillsboro, Jerry of Rockbridge, Charles E. and Randy, both of Greenfield; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Gracey of Chesterfield and Mrs. Frances Coonrod of Greenfield.

She was preceded in death by four children, two brothers and two sisters.

Arrangements are pending at Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield.


DIXON, WILLIAM JEFFERSON

William Jefferson "Jeff" Dixon, 84, of Greenfield died at 9:58 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 1992, at Reisch Memorial Nursing Home in Carrollton.

Born in Jersey County Dec. 1, 1907, son of Edward and Alice (Tucker) Dixon, he married Faye Ellen Scott July 28, 1928, in Carrollton and she died Feb. 2, 1990.

Surviving are one daughter, Norma Peters of Carrollton; two sons, Gale L. Dixon of Greenfield and Dennis K. Dixon of Rochester; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis E. Dixon and LeeAncel Dixon; and one sister, Pauline Hawley.

Mr. Dixon was a retired farmer.

Visitation was Sunday at Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Greenfield First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan Vititoe officiating. Burial was in Oak Wood Cemetery in Greenfield.

Memorials may be made to the Greenfield First Baptist Church, Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton or the Gideon Society.


EDWARDS, HELEN LORENE ISRAEL

Mrs. Helen Lorene Edwards, 90, of Roodhouse died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at the Prairie Village Nursing Home in Jacksonville.

She was born Oct. 7, 1914, in Murrayville, the daughter of Henry and Lydia (Mitchell) Israel. She married Ernest Edwards in 1932, and he died in 1970.

She is survived by three daughters, Helen Barrow of Greenfield, Patricia Hartle of Jacksonville, and Margie Tongate of Glasgow; two sons, Donald (wife Barbara) Edwards of Greenfield and Wayne (wife Shirley) Edwards of Roodhouse; 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Thomas Israel, Lester Israel, Charles Israel, and Frank Israel; and three sisters, Maude Wilson, Lillie Aired, and Dora Elizabeth Orris.

Mrs. Edwards was employed by Capps and Nesco Industries in Jacksonville before retiring.

Graveside services were at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Oakwood Cemetery in Greenfield with the Rev. Garrett Melvin officiating.

Mackey-Daws Funeral Home in Roodhouse was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the family.


ELHOFFER, LOIS A. GOEBEL

Lois A. Elhoffer, 69, of rural Carrollton, died Sunday, May 9, 2004, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Ill.

She was born Nov. 13, 1934, in Alton to Leo and Dorothy (Blundell) Goebel.

She married Ronald Elhoffer on March 22, 1952, in Chickasaw, Okla. He survives.

She was a 1952 graduate of Alton High School and a graduate of Lakeview Business School. She was raised in the Presbyterian Church and was also a charter member of Faith Bible Church in Greenfield during her adult life. She was a wonderful lady loved by many and lived a happy life surrounded by her friends and family. She was a lifetime homemaker who was a fabulous cook and a very organized caretaker. She loved going to movies and spending time with her husband. Her grandchildren were also a very intricate part of her life, and she loved taking them shopping and telling them stories. She also enjoyed raising her family of cats and planting lovely flowers in her garden and tending to them. She was a very giving and considerate woman who was always thinking of others and putting them ahead of herself at all times. Her life was centered around her many friends and family. She will be greatly and sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Sarah Elhoffer of Holt, Fla.; a son, Sam, and his wife, Deb, Elhoffer of Rockbridge; four grandchildren, Amy, Jill and Patrick Elhoffer and Cameron Ehlers; and a half-sister, Eileen Carter of Carrollton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Jackie Lee Goebel; and her stepmother, Emma Goebel.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Faith Bible Church in Greenfield, with Pastor Brian Gruen officiating.

Burial will be at Oak Wood Cemetery near Greenfield.

Memorials are suggested to the Faith Bible Church or the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.


FILLAGER, STELLA MEEK

Mrs. Stella Fillager of rural Greenfield, 75, died at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 1974, at Boyd Memorial Hospital, Carrollton.

A daughter of Thomas and Caroline Griswold Meek, she was born Jan. 3, 1899, in Rockbridge. She attended schools in Rockbridge and was a member of the Rockbridge United Methodist Church.

She married Joseph Fillager in 1951 and he died in 1962.

Survivors include three sisters-in-law, Mrs. C. M. Meek of Jerseyville, Mrs. Walter H. Fillager of Rockbridge, and Mrs. Floyd A. Meek of Peoria; one niece, Mrs. Charlotte Hartshorn of Vallejo, Calif.; and four great-nephews.

Visitation was after 4 p.m. Tuesday at Shields Memorial Home, Greenfield, where funeral services were at 1 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Paul Paskewitz of the Rockbridge United Methodist Church officiating. Interment followed in Oak Wood Cemetery, Greenfield.


HUTTON, LEE F.

Lee F. Hutton, 83, of Roodhouse died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1988, at Humana Lucerne Hospital in Orlando, Fla.

He was born Dec. 12, 1904, in Greene County, son of Charles Jesse and Laura (Brannan) Hutton. He married Virginia Odell Thaxton Feb. 14, 1934, in Tracy, Minn., and she preceded him in death.

Surviving are a son, Terry Hutton of Springfield, Mo.; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Marilyn) McDade of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Glenn "Blackie" Hutton of Jacksonville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Hutton.

Mr. Hutton farmed in the Athensville community for 40 years, and was a member and deacon of the Roodhouse Christian Church.

Visitation was held Wednesday at Mackey-Daws Funeral Home in Roodhouse where funeral services will be held today, Thursday, at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Oak Wood Cemetery in Greenfield.

Memorial gifts are suggested to the Roodhouse Christian Church.


KING, WAYNE

Greene County native Wayne King, 78, of Woodson died Thursday afternoon, Sept. 2, 2004, at Passavant Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville.

He was born June 20, 1926, in Athensville, the son of Myrvan and Mable (Walkington) King. He married Nada Shafer Nov. 15, 1968, in White Hall, and she survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Paula (husband Larry) Stucker of Jacksonville, Donna Bacon of Mascoutah and Kathy (husband Greg) Woosencraft of St. Charles, Mo.; four sons, Brian King of Woodson, Dennis (wife Deb) King of O'Fallon, Kevin Spring of Murphysboro and Roger (wife Alison) King of Barre, Vt.: 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Thayne "Ike" (wife Lucy) King of Jacksonville.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Buell King; and two sisters, Opal Edwards and Eileen Fleming.

Mr. King was employed at Capital Records in Jacksonville for 25 years. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He was of the Baptist faith, a member of the Woodson Lion Club and the Woodson American Legion.

Visitation was Sunday at Mackey-Daws Funeral Home in Roodhouse, where funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Vale Walkington officiating and the Rev. Vaughn Suhling assisting. Organist Gladys Huff accompanied Tim and Tammy Welch who sang "Amazing Grace" and "Precious Memories."

Casketbearers were Larry Wayne Price, Justin Price, Brian King, Adam Bacon, Patrick Price and Roger King. The Woodson American Legion conducted military rites at the cemetery. Assisting with the service were commander Paul Sheehan, chaplain Steve Lakin, firing squad John White, Kevin Birdsell, Robert Hamby, Frank Wildhagen, Lester Barfield and Larry Ludwig, color guard Ed Carrigan, Joe Casey, Bill Gibson and Marvin Wildhagen, and David Irlam played "Taps." Burial was at Oak Wood Cemetery in Greenfield.

Memorials are suggested to the Woodson American Legion or Woodson Baptist Church.


KINSER, HELEN RAWE

Helen Kinser, 84, of Greenfield dies

GREENFIELD - Helen Kinser, 84, of Greenfield died at 10:55 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at Reisch Memorial Nursing Home in Carrollton.

She was born Feb. 9, 1904, in Greenfield, daughter of Joseph and Nellie Dorsey Rawe. She married Guy O. Kinser Aug. 29, 1926, in Greenfield, and he preceded her in death Oct. 13, 1967.

She is survived by a daughter, Jane Kipling of Bushnell; three sons, R. William of Brighton, the Rev. J. Russell of Abilene, Texas and Guy O. Jr. of Greenfield; four grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Pete C. (Florence) Balotti of Carlinville; and a brother, Harold Rawe of Carrollton.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, a brother and two grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Greenfield. Burial will be in Oak Wood Cemetery, in Greenfield. Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. Sunday at Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield, where the rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Memorials are suggested to St. Michael's Catholic Church.


LONG, FOREST P.

Forest P. Long, 84, died at 7:59 a.m. Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at Saint Anthony�s Medical Center in Alton.

He was born June 6, 1920, in Fayette, Ill., a son of Frank E. and Marie O. (Davis) Long.

On Feb. 28, 1948, in Chicago, he married the former Wreatha Arnold. She survives.

A retired welding and ironworker, he was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1308 of Alton and the Tri County Rod and Gun Club.

In addition to his wife, surviving are a son, Roger K. Long of Carlinville; two grandchildren, Ryan K. Long of Jerseyville and Rachel Schnelton of Carrollton; and a great-grandchild, Brady M. Schnelton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Rodney Kent Long; and sisters, Frances Jones and Dorothy Goodman.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Targhetta Funeral Home in Brighton, where the Rev. Andy Goodman will officiate at services at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Greenfield with Richard, Robert and Kenny Goodman, Larry and Ronald Jones and Otto Wood Jr. serving as pallbearers.

The American Heart Association has been named a memorial.


MENELEY, ETHEL K. RICHARDS

GREENFIELD - Ethel K. Meneley, 79, died at 10:15 a.m. Monday, July 14, 1986, at her residence.

She was born in Carrollton, a daughter of the late Henry and Nettie (Scoggins) Richards.

On Aug. 13, 1925, she married Henry Meneley, and he survives.

Also surviving, are two daughters, Irene Knotts of Greenfield and Betty Ray Frankie of Vero Beach, Fla.; a son, Harold Meneley of Greenfield; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mamie Jacobsen of Baldwin, Wis. and a brother, Carson Richards of East Alton.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with services at 2 p.m. Thursday at Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield.

Burial will be at Oak Wood Cemetery in Greenfield.

NASH, JAMES T.

James T. Nash, 79, died at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, at Reisch Memorial Nursing Home in Carrollton.

He was born Nov. 29, 1925, in Greene County, Ill., a son of Claude V. and Flossie (Owens) Nash.

He married the former Dolores J. Cox in Ayer, Mass., on June 5, 1951. She survives.

He and his wife had owned and operated Nash Cleaners in Greenfield. He was a salesman for Glazebrook Fire Equipment in Washington, Ill., until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greenfield. A member of Tiger Backers, he had served as a member of the Chain Gang for the Greenfield Tiger football team for 48 years. He was a graduate of Greenfield High School. He was the assistant treasurer of the city of Greenfield, served on the Greenfield School Board and had been a member of the Woodbine Golf League. He was a past Master of Greenfield Masonic Lodge AF and AM 129, past patron of the Greenfield Order of Eastern Star 424, a member of the Golden Boys, had served as Greenfield chief of police, had been a firefighter for the Greenfield Fire Protection District for 46 years and served as fire chief for 42 years and was a member of the Greene County Fire Association. He entered the Merchant Marines in 1944, and served in the U.S. Army from 1951 until 1953 and served again in the Merchant Marines until his retirement in 1955.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Sheila, and her husband, Andrew, Aherin of Farmersville, Ill.; one son, R. Mark Nash of Springfield, Ill.; four grandchildren, Dereck Nash, who was raised in their home, of Chicago, Jonathan Aherin of Springfield, Ill., and Rachel Aherin of Farmersville, Ill., and Jessica Nash of Carlinville; and one sister, Betty Dugger of Fernley, Nev.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Stacey; and four brothers, Darrell, Dean, Chet and Billy.

Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday at the Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. George Rosales will officiate.

Interment will be at Oak Wood Cemetery in Greenfield, with military services provided by Greenfield Fitzsimmons Post 225.

Memorials are suggested to the Greenfield Tiger football team and the Greenfield Public Library.


PLOGGER, LEWIS DALE

Lewis Dale Plogger, 74, of Greenfield, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 1986, at Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville.

He was born May 20, 1912, in Rockbridge, the son of the late Lewis and Mary Alice (Manz) Plogger. He married Lena Davis who preceded him in death. He later married Ethel Shane May 8, 1961, in Arkansas, and she survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Alice Jane Jouett of Indianapolis, Ind. ; three sons, Russell Dale of Northampton, Mass., Harold Lee of Donathon, Mo., and Charles Wayne of Anchorage, Alaska; 10 grandchildren; two sisters, Rosalea Unzerzagt and Dorothy Gray, both of Alton.

Mr. Plogger retired from farming in 1972.

Services were held Monday, Nov. 17 at the Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield with burial in Oak Wood Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Greenfield First Baptist Church or the donor's choice.


RHODES, ELLEN MARIE MANN

Ellen Marie Rhodes, 45, of Carlinville died at 6:40 a.m. Saturday May 29 at Springfield Memorial Medical Center. She was born June 19, 1958 in Alton, a daughter of William and Evelyn Clark Mann.

She is survived by two daughters, Kaley Irene Rhodes and Dustine Marie Rhodes of Carlinville; and one son, Davis Neil Rhodes of Carlinville; two grandchildren, William Tyler of Wilsonville and Derek Michael of Carlinville; eight sisters, Anita Eileen Ansell of Brighton, Wilma Sue Dalton, Marcia Orr, Carol Jones, Willia Evelyn Goodall, all of Greenfield, Sharon Irene Fox and Donna Jane Reese of Carlinville, and Linda Kay Libbra of Girard; three brothers, John Franklin Mann of Havana, David Lynn Mann of Greenfield and Darrel Lee Mann of Medora. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Porter Ray Mann.

She was a certified nurse assistant at the Sunshine Manor of Carlinville. She was a member of the Fayette Baptist Church. While in school, she had won an award for poetry and she enjoyed growing flowers and writing poems.

Services were at Shields Memorial Home at 3 p.m. June 2 with Rev. Brian Gruen officiating. Burial was at Oak Wood Cemetery in Greenfield.

A fund for Ms. Rhodes' children has been named as a memorial. Donations may be made through the funeral home.

Funeral services for Ellen Marie Rhodes were conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 2 at the Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield with Rev. Brian Gruen officiating. Her niece, Serena Tigo, sang: "It is Well With My Soul," "In the Garden," and "Amazing Grace." Casket bearers were: Tim Jones, Joshua Mann, Shannon Reese, Brandon Goodall, Richie Jett and Willia Goodall. Burial was in Oak Wood Cemetery, Greenfield.


SANDERS, GARNETIA PEMBROOK

Garneita Pembrook Sanders died at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 3, 1988, at St. Anthony's Hospital in Alton.

She was born in rural Greenfield March 12, 1911, the daughter of the late Ansel and Elizabeth Featherstone Pembrook. She married William E. Sanders Nov. 1, 1936, and he preceded her in death a July 5, 1987.

She is survived by one son, Gary L. Sanders of Alton, and one brother, Archie Pembrook of rural Greenfield. Two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, with Rev. Dan Vititoe officiating. Mrs. Everett Griswold was the organist.

Casketbearers were Billy L. and Robert Pembrook, Jim Stuart, Jim Clothier, William Lansaw and Dale Featherstone.


SANSON, ROBERT C.

Robert C. Sanson, 74, died Monday, June 14, 2004, at his home.

He was born Sept. 28, 1929, in Greenfield, to Charles and Mina (Pembrook) Sanson.

He married the former Verna Hagaman in Greenfield. She survives.

He served in the Army during the Korean War and was a carpenter in the Greenfield area for many years. He also loved to garden and share it with family and friends.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Sherry Sanson of East Alton; three sons, Robert of Maryville, Jack of East Alton and Lloyd of Gillespie; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild; one brother, Keith; and one sister, Betty Large, both of Greenfield.

One daughter, Shelia; and three brothers, Lloyd, Gerald and Roy, preceded him in death.

The body was cremated and a memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield.

Burial will be at Oak Wood Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Greene County Hospice.


WALDEN, BETTY JUNE HYATT

Mrs. Betty June Walden, 65, of Elsberry, Mo., formerly of Meredosia, died early Thursday morning, July 29, 2004, at Elsberry Health Care Center near Elsberry.

She was born Nov. 21, 1938, in Meredosia, the daughter of Marvin Howard and Alice (Goforth) Hyatt. She married Wilbur R. Walden in August 1993, in Jacksonville, and he preceded her in death.

She is survived by a son, Gerald E. Hunter of Bluffs; two daughters, Alice Ann Daugherty of Baylis and Trudy Kay (husband Gerald) Jones of Elsberry, Mo.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dean (wife Gerry) Hyatt of Bluffs and Charles "Buster" Hyatt of Meredosia; a half brother, Dewayne Smith of Moses; two sisters, Shirley Barfield of Jacksonville and Mary (husband Robert) Brown of Meredosia; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Oak Wood Cemetery in Greenfield.

Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry, Mo., was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Catherine V "Ginger" Witt, 67, of Noblesville, Ind., died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville, Ind.

She was born Sept. 25, 1936, in Carlinville, the daughter of Milo J. and Virginia C. (Herring) Estes. She married Robert J. Witt July 25, 1955, and he survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Gerald J. (wife Kelly) Witt of Carmel, Ind.; three grandchildren, Nathaniel J. Witt, Michelle K. Witt, and Nicole K. Witt, all of Carmel, Ind.; and a brother, John M. (wife Carolyn) Estes of Covington, Ga.

Mrs. Witt was a graduate of Carlinville High School. She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Noblesville.

Friends called Wednesday at Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, at St. Michael's Church in Greenfield.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.

GREENFIELD - Charles D. Witt, 77, of Greenfield, died at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at his home.

Born Sept. 11, 1921, in rural Greenfield, he was a son of the late Everett Lee and Marjorie Sibyl (McCracken) Witt.

A 1940 graduate of Greenfield High School, he served with the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 until 1946.

He married the former Doris Woods July 6, 1946, in Litchfield. She survives.

Also surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Jeanie and Charles Gaige of Pinehurst, N.C.; two grandchildren, Justin Gaige and Julie Carpenter; a great-grandson, Wiley Carpenter; three sisters, Marjorie Bowman, Audree Doyle and Connie Tharp, all of Greenfield; and a brother, Robert J. Witt of Noblesville, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his twin brother, William Witt.

He operated Witt's Trucking with his father and brother. He retired in 1996 and was a member of White Hall Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7684 and the First Baptist Church in Greenfield for more than 50 years, where he was head usher for more than 30 years.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield, where services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday. The Rev. George Rosales and the Rev. Garret Melvin will officiate.

Burial will be at Oak Wood Cemetery in Greenfield, where military rites will be conducted by the White Hall V.F.W. Post #7684.

Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church.
