CRIST, RICHARD ABRAHAM

The Telegraph, Alton, IL., Oct 21, 2001

Confederate soldier finally gets grave marker

GREENFIELD -- Under a towering evergreen tree in Oakwood Cemetery north of Greenfield, Civil War Confederate veteran Richard Abraham Crist finally received a Confederate marker erected by his great-grandson in a quiet ceremony Friday. The great-grandson, Don Crist of East Alton, said he has spent some 25 to 30 years tracking his great-grandfather's history and whereabouts, including his final resting place. Crist secured the proper documentation and military records, and ordered the white marble shaft and the inscription: Richard A. Crist, Co. G, 58TH Virginia Regt. CSA 1827-1883.

Records show the Confederate soldier entered the American Civil War on Aug. 1, 1861, serving until Jan. 31, 1863. His right arm was amputated three days after Crist was shot in a battle outside Fredericksburg, Va., in December 1862. He received no pension.

He and his wife, the former Rebecca H. Plogger, left Rockbridge County, Va., and settled in the Illinois town of Rockbridge, where she had family, in 1870. The disabled veteran, who the 1870 census lists as a farmer, died in 1883 at the age of 56.

"I am erecting this marble shaft at the gravesite of my great-grandfather to show the world that I appreciate the hardships he endured and the suffering he experienced as a disabled, pension-less Confederate veteran," Don Crist said.

Crist said Oakwood Cemetery Board members were hesitant at first to allow him to erect a Confederate marker at the cemetery: however, his family has a long line of men who have served in the United States military during the Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

"This is my response to those who didn't want me to erect the grave marker for my great-grandfather: Our family have many who have served honorably in the military service of the United States," Crist said. "One in particular, Sgt. Richard Crist, Richard A. Crist's grandson, died in France during World War II; his own father was too heartbroken to have even a family memorial service for him, as his body was never sent home.

"That young man never had a chance to have a family and has never had any memorial service done for him," Crist said. "He was a native son of Greene County, and I feel he has paid the price for his grandfather to have a memorial marker at his grave, even if it is Confederate marker. While I honor my great-grandfather, I wish to honor Sgt. Crist, too; he left no children, and I don't want him to be a forgotten man."

Don Crist, a retired American and world history teacher, said he was elated to have finally completed his dream.

"The white marble marker is beautiful, and so is the setting here in Oakwood Cemetery," he said. "I am grateful that it is no longer an unmarked, unknown gravesite."

GREEN, EDITH

The Greenfield Argus--Greenfield, IL. Sep. 1909

Four children in the home of Phillip Green were stricken with diphtheria last week, which caused much uneasiness among our people. Some of these children had been attending school days previous, and it was feared that the infection might spread, so the board of education dismissed two of the lower rooms on Friday last and disinfected them, but as so many of the pupils were kept at home it was thought best to close all the rooms except the high school for a week, which was done by an order of the board Monday night. Edith, the eight-year-old daughter of Mr. Green, died on Monday from the effects of the contagion, but the other children are making satisfactory progress towards recovery, and as no cases have developed it is hoped the contagion will not give any further trouble.
