WALTER, DELIA

SUICIDE BY POISON.

Delia Walter Took Strychnine on Street-Died on Reaching Home.

Miss Delia Walter, a young woman who had been stopping at Bird Ashlock's, in the northeast part of town, committed suicide by taking strychnine last Friday afternoon. She was the daughter of Chas. Walter of Woodville town, and was about 18 years old.

Miss Walter had been working as a domestic for Mrs. Howard Perry for several months, but quit there recently, and was making her home temporarily at Mr. Ashlock's, who lives near the crossing of the Q.,C. & St. L. and C. & A. roads. She came up town last Friday afternoon and in the course of her shopping tour she called at F. P. Williams' drug store and tried to buy some poison, stating that she wanted it to kill rats. The clerks refused to sell it to her, and she went to Smith's drug store. Here she again stated that she wanted some rat poison, asking for arsenic. Chas. Crow, the salesman, tried to sell her raticide and other preparations, but she didn't want them. He then suggested that strychnine would kill a rat quicker than arsenic, and she bought ten cents' worth.

The young woman probably took the poison on the way home, as she was thirsty and took a drink of water as soon as she reached the house. Then she had spasms and died in a great deal of agony.

Coroner Cravens came over from Wrightsville and held an inquest Saturday morning. The verdict was suicide by poisoning. No definite cause is known for the rash act, as Miss Walter had been in good health and apparently in good spirits. Mr. Crow, who sold her the poison, says she did not appear to be the least bit excited or anxious when she was in the store, but talked as rationally and coolly as though she were making any other purchase.

The body was taken Saturday forenoon to her father's home, south of Woody, where funeral services were held. The girl's mother died in the same manner several years ago.

From AH:Her mother, father and an infant sister are all buried in Borlin Cemetery.
