Slave Archival Collection

The following alphabetical extract of slave data was generated from a campaign to collect names of enslaved ancestors from living descendants across the country.  This is an ongoing project to preserve slave genealogy and history for future generations.  The names gathered will be placed on a permanent memorial honoring our enslaved ancestors who helped build our nation.

This archival collection can be used as a cross-reference information sharing tool.  It will allow you to access the given surname of slaves and other pertinent information on the person(s) you are researching. The stories are based on the lives of the slaves in bondage and in freedom.  Although, the name of the person that submits the information is not included on this database, you can contact ISDSA for more information and possibly correspond with people researching the same surname.

One of the unique aspects of this database is that you can participate in this campaign by submitting names of your enslaved ancestor(s) and other information online to be included in this database.  See the comments section of our website to add your slave ancestor’s data. You can submit photographs of former slaves for the traveling exhibit A Tribute to Our Enslaved Ancestors: The People’s Exhibit. Send a copy of the photograph (not a zerox copy) to ISDSA, P.O. Box 436937, Chicago, Illinois 60643-6937.  Please include the name of the slave, the dates and places of birth and death, if known, your name and address, and your relationship to the person in the photograph.
