Maranesi Veterans of World War One, United States Armed Forces
by Peter L. Belmonte
(updated 4/24/99)

This is a list of immigrant men from Marano Marchesato and Marano Principato, province of Cosenza, Calabria, Italy, who served in the US Armed Forces during World War One (April 5, 1917-November 11, 1918). Most of the names (unless otherwise indicated) are on a Kenosha County World War One veterans memorial located in the entrance to the Simmons Public Library in Kenosha. Additional names are found on a list of Kenosha County World War One veterans (created ca. 1920) maintained by the library. The library also holds a copy of an article published in the Kenosha News in 1936 listing all known Kenosha World War One veterans; there are some minor differences among these three important sources of World War One veterans from Kenosha. Still other names are recorded in other documents such as naturalization paperwork. Village of birth information comes from cross-checking a variety of sources. The most important such sources are the World War One draft registration cards. In some cases, the precise village of birth of the men is only surmised using the next of kin information found on these cards. Sometimes only "Marano" is given as place of birth; if no other corroborating document was found, the information was so recorded. The spelling of each name is derived from a variety of sources—the memorial, the library list, and other documents—which sometimes differ. When a portion of the first name is given in parentheses, this indicates the best match between the memorial (with only first initials) and World War One draft registration cards. Additional information included comes from many different sources. These sources are cited for each name as follows:

  • (dr)—US government draft registration records for World War One.
  • (lib)—Typewritten list of Kenosha County men serving in the US Armed Forces during World War One; Simmons Public Library, Kenosha, Wisconsin. This list is the only extant source of complete first names, serial numbers, and units. First names in parenthises below are added from the best available sources, usually draft registration cards which indicate only one man with the applicable first initial.
  • (nm)—Name is not on the memorial in the Simmons Public Library.
  • (os)—Information found in other sources such as Italian vital statistics records, US and state government veterans records, family information, passenger lists, etc.
