CEMETERY PICTURES FROM DEWITT COUNTY, ILLINOIS
I have loaded the pictures that I took on a trip to DeWitt County, Illinois Sept 1999. I went there for family research but instead traveled to as many cemeteries as I could in the week I had. I was saddened by the condition of many of the cemeteries that hold the remains of the founders of DeWitt County and frightened that many of their gravesites will be lost forever. Please forgive the state of some of the pictures as I did not have time to take the necessary steps to get the best picture, but please note that some of the stones are no longer readable in whatever light. I urge anyone that has the time to contact the Illinois State Controller and state their outrage at the conditions of the burial grounds of the "Silent Heroes of Illinois". I say silent because most of these people did not become famous, they did not leave large estates, but what they did do was travel sometimes thousands of miles into a wilderness, facing unknown perils, and out of that wilderness they built a land that we can all be proud of. They suffered many hardships, but were always ready to fight for what they believed in at all costs. They were the builders of Illinois and this Nation and to let their burials sites fall into the conditions that I found is at the very least disgraceful and appalling! Those who want to try the e-mail to the controller can find a feedback at: Cemetery Feedback I did not have any luck with this. Please check these two cemeteries "Hall", and "Barnett" and tell him how you would fell if your ancestors were buried there. I will add more pictures of the neglected cemeteries as I get pictures. Be aware that I did not get photo's of all gravesites in any given cemetery so if you don't find someone it is just because I didn't get to that corner.
