G. Wilse Tilton Scrapbook, newspaper clipping dated [Summer 1890], p. 5. [This clipping was pasted over two older clippings in the Tilton scrapbook. It has been tentatively dated to the summer of 1890 by the mention of the birth of Nina Tilton.]

The Hodges, Tilton and Tate reunion was quite an enjoyable success on last Tuesday. Hodges, Tiltons and Tates were numerous, and their many relatives and friends gathered in numbers at high noon. A long table was set and spread beneath the shade of the beautiful trees of the seminary park with all the good things imaginable. Everyone was invited. The Doxology was sung, followed by prayer, and then a loud shout of "help yourself" reached the ear of all from one end of the table to the other. After dinner chatting and making acquaintances was in order, after which the minutes were read. No deaths, but one added to the list, Nina Tilton, of Fairmount. Election of officers next: S. Hodges, president; G. W. Tilton, vice-president; A. R. McGregor, secretary. Executive committee--William Hodges, Joe Toph and B. Hodges. The grove near the county farm was named as the next place of meeting. Several letters of regrets from relatives from a distance were read, after which speeches from three to five minutes were called for and responded to by J. Smith of Decatur, Dr. Lamon of Fairmount, Rev. Griffith of South Danville, Attorney George Tilton of Danville, Rev. Cummings, S. Hodges, W. Hodges, B. Hodges, J. Toph, G. W. Tilton and others. Between speeches songs and instrumental music were served, after which quite a number of old folks were called to the front and all participated in a general good handshake, which was enjoyed by everyone.

Notes

Judy Merrell ([email protected]) sends the following information about this item:

"Nina Virginia Tilton was the daughter of Charles Vernon Tilton and Jeannette Lewis Reese. Charlie ran a general store in Fairmount. This would be G. W. Tilton's granddaughter. Her birthdate was 11 June 1890. She was living in Danville in 1957.

"The attorney, George Tilton, was G. W. Tilton's nephew. He also was a postmaster and newspaperman in Danville.

"A.(Albert) R. McGregor was G. W. Tilton's son-in-law. He was married to Elsie Venus Tilton.

"These families must have been friends, as I cannot find any ties to Hodges or Tates in the Tilton info I have."
