Eugene R. Richey, 77 of Palestine, IL, died at 5:07 (e.s.t) Friday, march 19, 2004 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Vincennes, IN after a brief illness. He was born May 13, 1926 in Palestine, IL, the son of Sam Richey and Pearl Lamb Richey.

He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U. S. Navy. He was a member of the Robinson American Legion Post #69, the First Christian Church in Palestine where he served as a deacon, a member of the Robinson Elks Lodge #1188, a member of the Palestine Library Board, a member of the Palestine Preservation Projects Society, and was active in the Palestine Senior Citizens program. He was awarded the Senior Citizen of the Year award by the Palestine Chamber of Commerce.

Eugene married Maxine Corder on January 14, 1950 and she survives. He is also survived by is son, Mike Richey and Barbara, Robinson; his daughter and her husband, Marcia and Roger Elder, rural Flat Rock; 3 grandchildren and their spouses, April and Dan Hill, Farmer City, Shanna and Sean Ogle, Warner-Robbins, GA, and Aaron and Jacqueline Richey, Mesquite, TX; 5 great grandchildren, Taylor and Dylan Ogle, Alice, Conner, and Ben Hill; his sister, Velma Maddox; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Virgil, Carl, and Russell Richey; sisters, Esther Richey, Inez Goodlink, Ruth Laughead, and Opal Price.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, march 23, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at the Goodwine Funeral Home, Palestine. Rev. James Delaney III is in charge of services. Burial is in the Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Palestine. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Monday and until service time on Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the Palestine Public Library with envelopes at the funeral home.
