Arch L. Carpenter, 90, of rural Flat Rock, IL, died at 1:05 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at his residence. He was born February 10, 1917 in Burton, West Virginia, the son of Arch Carpenter and Bonnie Park Carpenter.

He served in the U. S. Navy in the South Pacific during WWII. He worked in maintenance at Crawford Memorial Hospital, Robinson. He was a member of the Flat Rock Masonic Lodge #348, Ainad Shrine, East St. Louis, the Chapter and Commandorie of the York Rite; the Flat Rock American Legion Post #132, and First Missionary Baptist Church, Flat Rock.

He married Nellie Pearl Taylor December 24, 1939 and she survives. He is also survived by 1 son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Sarah Carpenter, rural Flat Rock; 1 daughter, Ann Martin, Tallahassee, FL; his daughter-in-law, Irene Carpenter, Camp Point; 9 grandchildren, Jane Shimp, Nancy Sharage, Tony Weaver, Lisa King, Abby Carpenter, Molly Carpenter, Matt Carpenter, Laura Carpenter, Heather Carpenter; 7 great grandchildren, Max and Meryl Shimp, Ryan and Mitchell Sharage, Kyle and Alex Weaver and Gavin King; 1 half sister, Gene Tharp, Las Vegas, NV; his half brother, Bill Moore, Robinson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son John Carpenter; and his brother, Dale Carpenter; his half brother, Jack Moore, and his half sister Margaret Murphy.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 4th at 11:00 a.m. at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Flat Rock. Rev. Dean West and Brother Bill McClaskey are in charge of services. Burial will be in the Jones Cemetery, rural Flat Rock. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock, and from 10:00 a.m. to service time on Friday at the church. Masonic services will be at 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Military graveside services will be conducted by combined units of the Flat Rock American Legion Post #132, the Robinson American Legion Post #69, the Robinson V. F. W. Post #4549, and the Amvets Post #33. Memorials may be made to the Flat Rock First Missionary Baptist Church or to the Lincolnland Hospice with envelopes at the funeral home.
