Following is one of the Biographies and Stories which where gathered by Charles Sumner McKamy in the 1950s for publication in a Crawford County History Book. Unfortunately he passed away before the book was published.
Horning, Osceola (deceased) -- A progressive farmer of Hutsonville Township, Crawford County, was born near Hutsonville September 23, 1880 and died January 23, 1954. A son of Isaac N. and Mary C. (Harry) Horning, Ocie was reared on his father's farm and attended the district school a few months each year, living his entire life in the home community with the exception of one year in Lake Worth, Florida and two years on his brother Will's farm northwest of Robinson. He was a farmer, carpenter, in fact, a jack of all trades, always feeling he could do anything he set his mind and heart to do.
For a few years he was associated with his brother Will Horning buying and selling timber land at Piggott, Ark. In 1932, he was much concerned with the plight of farmers and aligned himself with the AAA and soil conservation serving as community committeeman and at the time of his death was county committeeman.
Mr. Horning was married at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Woolverton of Hutsonville Township, December 22, 1912, to Verna L. Woolverton. They had one daughter, Mary Martha born January 21, 1919, and is married to Robert Hargrave, minister of Christian Church of Defiance, Ohio. They have two sons, Robert Lance and James Michael Hargrave.
In 1918, O.A. Horning bought the farm of Wm. A. Davids. Later remodeling it himself into a beautiful home. He served for many years as school director of home district and was a member of Oak Grove Christian Church in early life, later transferring his membership to Hutsonville Christian Church.
