Rice Cemetery

by Meta Nofftz Miller

Champaign County Genealogical Society Quarterly: As published in Volume 9, Issue 2

In 1981 the original recordings of this cemetery were revised and updated by Meta Nofftz Killer, the Secretary of the Trustees of the Rice Cemetery Association. Ninety-one of' the original 299 were corrected, and 61 added. Part of the latter were burials since 1957, but some had been missed when the first transcriptions were made, often because a stone with multiple listings had not been completely recorded. Five markers no longer exist, but their information is included.

Although not included here, the original 1981 transcription aids in the location of each grave by listing the section, lot number according to an attached map, and lot owners are named. It also indicates an epitaph, and motifs are listed when they occurred. The transcription is on file in the Archives.

Civil War veterans are marked "*". Only seven were marked in the first recording, but very old cemetery records also included Albert Busey, James Ellars, Wm. Harrison, and Lewis Yates. These four have not been verified elsewhere. The cemetery is located near the Sadorus Sportsman's Club in the NW quarter of section 25 in Sadorus Township.
