J. L. Bradbury, merchant, York.  This gentleman is a member of one of our old pioneer families who came here when the settlements were few, and wild beasts and wilder men roamed through the forest.  He was born August 9, 1850, in Crawford County.   His father, John S. Bradbury, whose portrait is in this work, is a farmer by occupation.  Our subject was also a tiller of the soil in early life.  He was educated mostly in Robinson and Terre Haute. He taught school two years, after which he clerked four years in York and Sullivan.  He opened a grocery store in the former place in 1877.  Mr. Bradbury was joined in matrimony, March 22, 1877, in this county, to Miss Mary A. Hamill, born May 7, 1855, in Sullivan County, Ind.  She is a daughter of Marks and Jane (Kelly) Hamill, who were born in Ireland.  Mrs. Bradbury is the mother of one little girl:  Ola Joy, born November 1, 1882. Mrs. Bradbury is a member of the Old School Presbyterian Church.  Mr. Bradbury is identified with the Democratic party.
