His wife, and mother of our subject, was born in Ohio, in 1812, and is still living; she is the mother of twelve children, of whom William, our subject, and John F., of Arcadia, Ill., are living. Our subject lived at home till he was twenty-one years of age, when he enlisted in Co. G, Thirty-fourth Illinois, under command of Col. Ed. P. Kirk, and served for seven months. He then returned to Morgan County, and was apprenticed to the harness maker's trade, and worked there for about one and a half years. In May, 1865, he moved to Chandlerville, where he worked as a journeyman at this trade for several years, and in 1870 opened a harness shop there. In 1876 he was appointed postmaster, which office he is now holding; he also works some at his trade; and also does some first class job printing, for the accommodation of the business men of town and vicinity; and also keeps a stationery and cigar store, in connection with his other business.
