PIONEER & EARLY SETTLER OF WOODBURY COUNTY, IOWA
Woodbury County Genealogical Society Certificate Program
To receive a Pioneer Certificate, the applicant must descend directly from an ancestor who settled in Woodbury County on or before 1885 .
To receive an Early Settler Certificate, the applicant must descend directly from an ancestor who settled in Woodbury County on or before 1910 .
You need not be a current or past resident of Woodbury County or a member of the Woodbury County Genealogical Society to receive a certificate. Certificates will be issued upon verification by WCGS. Your application will be returned if you are not eligible.
Please send a written request with a #10 SASE for an application packet (or you may print these pages) l. The packet will include the instructions and application forms. A separate application must be submitted for each Pioneer or Early Settler for which a certificate (s) is requested. MAKE COPIES OF THESE FORMS PRIOR TO FILLING THEM OUT.
Instructions for Completing Application.
Read all instructions and forms before filling them out. If you have any questions write to the address listed below or e-mail your request for assistance to Connie at [email protected] . We will be happy to answer any questions concerning the completion of the application, however, this will not include doing free research.
1. Application must be typed or legibly printed.
2. You may not be able to fill in all spaces, but enough must be completed and backed up with copies of proof to establish your direct line and residency of your pioneer. DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS, SEND PHOTOCOPIES. The application and documentation will not be returned. They will become property of the Woodbury County Genealogical Society and placed in the Pioneer Settler File that will be available as an informational resource.
3. The fee for each pioneer or early settler certificate will be $15.00, subject to change without notice.
4. USE MAIDEN NAMES FOR ALL WOMEN. Example: Jane Smith married John Doe. For her first marriage she will be listed as Jane Smith. For her second marriage she will be listed as Jane (Smith) Doe.
5. RECORD ALL DATES: Day of Month, 1st three letters of the month, Year. Example: 15 Dec 1880.
6. RECORD PLACE NAMES: City, County, State when possible. Example: Sioux City, Woodbury, IA

EXAMPLES OF PROOF - A minimum of two items of documentation is required showing evidence of the pioneer�s settlement in Woodbury County. Documentation that is not issued by an official source must have a full reference, which includes the following: name of publication, publication date, page numbers, microfilm or microfiche sheet reference number, where the material was found (name and address of location, call number of book or periodical).
FEDERAL OR TERRITORIAL CENSUS: Information may be hand copied IF you include date census was taken, county, household numbers and page numbers. Relationships may be shown on federal census from 1880 on. Residency will be verified in census.
OFFICIAL VITAL STATISTIC RECORDS (birth, death and marriage). Birth records must have parents names listed. The mothers maiden name must be shown if your application is down through her line.
OFFICIAL COURT RECORDS such as wills, estates, citizenship�s, divorce, voting records, guardianships, land records and litigation. Abstracts of title may include many of the foregoing vital facts that you need. Many cemetery records provide a great deal of vital information such as family relationships.
MILITARY RECORDS, SCHOOL, AND CHURCH RECORDS.
ANCESTOR DIARIES and OLD FAMILY BIBLES may be used in some cases. Please do not use bibles after 1910 as there are many other forms of proof after that date.
