Bio Obituary: Charles TONER, 12 May 1899
At 14 yrs moved to Lee Co., IA, at Keokuk. In the spring of 1854, he, along with Thomas Whitehill and Lewis Wilson (or Wright) came to Page Co., to select homesteads. They camped north of Clarinda at what is now Hepburn. Toner and Wilson rode the Whitehill team while Tom Whitehill walked. It was so marshy along the river valley that the horses could not walk and had to pick their way along the ridges. Tom Whitehill could walk in it and arrived in Clarinda almost the same time as the horses, on 10 May 1854. There was only one log cabin in the present town of Clarinda belonging to Judge Snyder. He directed them south and told them to help themselves to land for $1.25 an acre. They selected a quarter Section apiece (Sec. 13) except for Tom who was not yet 21 and had to wait until of age, later he took land east, nearer the Nodaway River, they returned in the summer to build cabins and the families moved in September of 1854. Charles was a Charter member of the Covenanter Church and an Elder 1877. Charles and family moved to New Mexico in 1885. Lived at Bernalillo, N.M. in 1892. Rancher. by Phyliss Fulk, 1996
