U.S. World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
John W. DUNCAN, age 24yrs
President WILSON diplomatic skills faced their severest test in the European arena. In June 1914, at Sarajevo in the Austro-Hungarian province of Bosnia, the fateful shot had been fired which set in motion the well-oiled machinery of war in Europe. By September the pattern of warfare which was to claim millions of lives over the next four years was already set, as the opposing armies of the British-French-Russian Allies and the German-Austro-Hungarian Central Powers dug themselves into the trenches of the Western Front. America's immediate reaction to the out- break of war was to proclaim itself neutral.
Pres. Wilson strove to sustain an even course, but in 1915 an event occurred which put this policy in serious jeopardy. In the early afternoon of May 7, the German submarine U20 sank the British passenger ship Lusitania off the coast of Ireland with the loss of almost 1,200 lives, including those of 124 American citizens. The attack, which violated the principles of international law, produced an immediate outcry at home.
April 2 1917 Pres WILSON appeared before a joint session of Congress to ask for the authority to declare war on the German Empire. In a moving address, he spelled out the overriding aim of American intervention as the establishment of freedom and world peace. "The world," he said, "must be made safe for democracy." On April 6, 1917, Congress gave him the authority he sought. The United States was at war with Germany.
America at War:
The mobilization of America in the First World War was one of the most remarkable episodes in the nation's history. The Federal Government commandeered all industries which were deemed essential to the war effort and took over the administration of the country's railroad and communications systems. A Council for National Defense delegated the day-to-day running of the economic infrastructure to a series of Government agencies such as Bernard Baruch's War Industries Board and Herbert Hoover's Food Administration. At the same time, a Committee on Public Information under George Creel set about mobilizing public opinion against Germany with a zeal whose effects would outlast the war itself, with ugly consequences. Legislation was passed to silence opposition to the war at home, the Espionage Act of 1917 and the Sedition Act of 1918 providing the Government with. draconian powers of imprisonment, arrest, and deportation. Meanwhile, the military effort was moving into top gear. American warships convoyed Allied and American vessels across the Atlantic, and the first American Expeditionary Force ever to set foot on European soil arrived in France by the fall of 1917. Within 18 months of declaring war, America had mobilized an army of more than four million men, two million of whom had been sent to France. The American military intervention was to prove decisive. When the Russian Government, now in the hands of the Bolsheviks, negotiated a separate peace with Germany at Brest-Litovsk in the closing months of 1917, hundreds of thousands of German troops were redeployed from the Eastern to the Western Front. The plight of the Allies looked grave indeed by the spring of 1918, when the German army began its first Marne offensive. America responded by pouring some 1-75 million troops into France between March and October 1918. The moment of truth came on July 15, when the German army began the offensive known as the Second Battle of the Marne. A quarter of a million U.S. troops played a crucial part in beating off the German assault at Chateau-Thierry, and by July 18 the last great German drive of the War had been defeated. As the German Chancellor later put it, "The history of the world was played out in three days." By October 1918 the final Allied offensive had driven Germany to sue for peace, and an armistice was declared in November 1918

When I first contacted my Mothers "1st Cousin" Kathryn, (Duncan) James, she had several excuses why she should come the the "Reunion" 1st. She was NOT born in Page Co., Iowa nor did she ever live there.
Secondly only 3 people came from Iowa to her father funeral in Feb 1976, of the 20 still living.
