ROBERT ALEXANDER DUNCAN's marriage:
 Alex. DUNCAN was 24 years old when he married the young 19 yrs. Miss RACHEL PINKERTON in the spring, on March 4 1885. The "Covenanter" Rev. DAVID McKEE officiating. The wedding took place at the home of the bride "Pinkerton Grove", in Harlan Twp., Page Co., Iowa. It has been reported that a "Bible" brought them together.
This writer has another Bible in his personal possession, a tattered and torn prayer book "HOLY BIBLE" Sunday School Edition, Copyright 1892, 1896 by The Saalfield Publishing Co., with a handwritten inscription in the front cover:
 To Mrs. RACHEL DUNCAN from R. A. DUNCAN, Dec. 25th. 1912
There is no entries of births, marriages, or deaths, but there are various newspaper clippings of poems and verses, that apparently impressed my Great-Grandmother RACHEL (PINKERTON) DUNCAN.
  GREAT-GRANDMOTHER'S PRAYER BOOK
To One Person It Is A Cold Thing
Of No Value Whatsoever --
To Another It Seems Warm And
Close, Beyond Intrinsic Value.
Why?
Because when I see this little book I see it in the hands of my dear Great-Grandmother Rachel (Pinkerton) Duncan. I see her reading from it by the light of a kerosene lamp on the kitchen table. I see her opening it and closing it at church every Sunday, every month. I see her holding it in her folded hands at the closing prayer of every sermon. I see it lose its cover and I see my Great-Grandmother Rachel (Pinkerton) Duncan tenderly try to glue it on again. Many years have passed since my Great-Grandmother Rachel (Pinkerton) Duncan closed this little book for the last time, but to me it is a precious thing of warmth "between Me and Thee" that only the heart can know... Great-Grandson Paul R. Sarrett, Jr.

Grandma Rachel (PINKERTON) DUNCAN spent all of her 44 years of marriage life with Robt. 'Alex' DUNCAN on the "DUNCAN Home-place" in Amity Twp. She died on 13 Oct. 1929, at the age of 62 years, 8 months, and 12 days, in Amity Twp., Iowa, she was buried in "Maple Hill" Cemetery, College Springs, Amity Twp., Page Co., Iowa. (Section III, Row 7, Lot 2) on 17 Oct. 1929. RACHEL had been under care of Dr. J. F. HEANSY of Clarinda, Iowa for some 4 years prior to her death. She had Arthritis in her later years of life. The informant on her Certificate of Death was Mrs. ZORA (KELLEY) DUNCAN her daughter-in-law, (wife of WILLIAM A. DUNCAN) Certificate No. 73-2923, file 12 Oct. 1929.
That summer in 1929, Grandpa Alex DUNCAN, knew his wife was dying and wanted his son (Uncle Jack W. DUNCAN) of North Hollywod to come home to Iowa to see his Mother one last time. The following is what I remember, as I was only 13 years old.

 The Clarinda Herald-Journal
 Long-Time Shambaugh Resident Dies  Issue: Apr 17, 1945
 R.A. DUNCAN, popularly known as Alex passed away Sunday evening at his country home southwest of Shambaugh where he had resided for 52 years
The funeral arrangements were delayed until word could be received from a grandson, Lt. Kenneth FULK, of the U.S. Marines. The Services will be at the United Presbyterian Church in College Springs, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
Mr. DUNCAN had a severe illness three years ago, but underwent an operation, at which time a limb was removed, and he made wonderful recovery. His final illness was brief.
Mr. DUNCAN has been among the oldest readers of the Herald-Journal, boasting that he had been a regular subscriber for 59 years.  Robert Alexander DUNCAN, son of Robert & Mary Ann DUNCAN was born in Page Co., IA. near Coin, January 06, 1862, and departed this life April 15, 1945 at the age of 83 years 2 months and 9 days.
He has lived in Page Co. all those years and on his farm near Shambaugh the last 52 years.
He was united in marriage on March 04, 1855 [sic] to Rachel PINKERTON. To this union were born eight children. Four of these children proceeded him in death, three being small, and William whose widow is Zora DUNCAN of Clarinda. His wife proceeded him in death October 13, 1929.
The surviving children are:
Mrs. Mable (Duncan) LINDLEY of Iowa City;
Mrs. Jennie (Duncan) FULK of Clarinda;
Mr. John W. DUNCAN of Hollywood, Calif; and
Mrs. Vera (Duncan) WILSON who has been with him recent years.
Also one brother John W. DUNCAN of near Shambaugh.
One sister Mrs. Jane E. (Duncan) PINKERTON proceeded him on 22 Feb 1914.
   In the Newspaper Obit. for R.A. DUNCAN, they list he "lived on the Duncan Home-Place for 52 years" this places him as moving there in 1893? this must be in error, it should have been 75 years, moved there in 1854 with his Mother & Brother

   My Remembrance of G-Grandfather DUNCAN
     This writer was only 5 years old when my Great-Grandfather Alex. DUNCAN died, but I still remember when my family visited from Kansas City, Mo. and the old, gentleman in a wheelchair, would tickle my face with his whiskers when I hugged him...prs As a barefoot farm boy, Alex. DUNCAN herded cattle on the section lines of his mother's homestead in Amity Township, Page County, Iowa. Here he saw the exciting new inventions come to the farm home that we take for granted today. The Automobile, the farm truck and tractor, that would replace old "Dobbin", as well as the phonograph, electricity, telephone, radio, rural free delivery and the first graded roads. He was active in his community and was a honest industrious citizen. He loved his family and raised them the Christian way. By his honorable and upright dealings he had the respect of the entire community. (prs)
