The year JOHN W. DUNCAN was born, was the same year ABRAHAM LINCOLN,
republican, was elected President of United States in a 4-way race.
He was the second child, and first son of ROBERT M. & MARY ANN (ALEXANDER)
DUNCAN. He was only 3 years old when his father ROBERT M. DUNCAN
was killed in the Civil War 3 days after Christmas on 28th Dec. 1862,
at the Chickasaw Bluff Campaign, near Vicksburg, Miss. He was early
inured to farm labor life, and soon felt the responsibility of contributing
to the support of the family.
JOHN WILEY DUNCAN, age 11 months can be identified living with his
parents, & 3yr old Sister in the [See: 1860 Census] for Tarkio Twp., Page Co., IA.
The next record list the Widow MARY A. (ALEXANDER) DUNCAN, age 39 along with her
three small children JANE E., age 6; JOHN W., age 4 and baby ROBERT
ALEX. age 2 removed into the town of Clarinda. Source from a document
dated 01 Jun. 1863, from her Widows Pension Applications [REF:#022]
"Applicant and children Reside in Clarinda" No record has been found by
this writer in the Page Co., Land Title Office, of ownership of any
property in the town of Clarinda at this time, maybe she was renting? The Clarinda
resident is consistent with other records up to the 07 Feb. 1870 purchase
of the "Duncan Mineral Springs Stock" in Amity Twp.
JOHN WILEY DUNCAN was 10 years old when his mother MARY A. (ALEXANDER)
DUNCAN, age 45 married on 14th day of Sep. 1869, a second time to
JOHN T. DUNCAN, age 62 as his second wife.

In the 1880 Census at age 20 JOHN WILEY DUNCAN was listed as head
of the household and was living with his stepfather JOHN T. DUNCAN
His mother MARY ANN ALEXANDER DUNCAN died the year before in 1879;
on their farm on Section 20, Amity Twp. (College Springs) Iowa.

In 1882 when JOHN WILEY DUNCAN was 22 years old he was united in marriage
to 20 years old Miss ANNA ROBERTSON BERRY; b. __ Aug. 1862, in Urbana,
Ohio; d. 12 Nov. 1947, at the age of 85 years in Page County, Iowa;
ANNA ROBERTSON (BERRY) DUNCAN was the only daughter of GEORGE BERRY
JR. (b. 1826, Scotland, d. 1916, Amity, Ia.) and his wife AGNES (BERRY)
BERRY; (b. 1833, Scotland, d. 1913, Amity, Ia.) The BERRY's lived
on "BERRY HILL" in Section 4, Amity Township, Page County, Iowa.
On 25th Feb. 1884, JOHN WILEY & ANNA (BERRY) DUNCAN and little WALTER
GEORGE 5 months old, along with step-father JOHN T. DUNCAN, 77 years
old relocated to a farm of 45 acres on Section 14 & 15, in Amity Township
which he bought from his younger brother ALEX. DUNCAN. Step-father
JOHN T. DUNCAN died the next year at 78 years old, in 1885. (Source:

JOHN W. DUNCAN is descended from a family of Scotch-Irish ancestry. His grandfather,
Adam W. Duncan, was a farmer in Guernsey County, Ohio.
John and Andrew, his sons [Adam W.] who still survive, are residents of Guernsey County.
Robert M. Duncan, the father of John W., [Our Subject] was born in Londonderry, Guernsey County, Ohio,
and was a blacksmith by trade; he was also interested in agricultural pursuits.
He married Mary A. Alexander, a daughter of
John Alexander, and they were the parents of four children:
1. Jennie Duncan,
2. Elizabeth Duncan,
3. John W. Duncan, and <---This Subject!..prs]
4. Robert Alexander Duncan, the youngest son. <---My Gr-Grandfather..prs]
Robert M. Duncan came to Iowa a few years after his marriage, and in 1858 he settled in Page County
and began farming in Tarkio Township. He was a soldier in the civil war, and was killed at Vicksburg
by the bursting of a shell before the siege began. His widow survived until February 27, 1879.
They were both members of the United Presbyterian Church, and were honorable, industrious people.
John W. Duncan, the subject of this brief biography, was born in Page County, Iowa August 6, 1860, and
was but two and a half years old at the time of his father's death. ...
In 1869 his mother was married a second time to John T. Duncan, a native of Indiana County, Pennsylvania.
He was also a soldier in the civil war, and was a member of the
company that captured John Morgan in Ohio. ... member of United Presbyterian Church. He died in 1885,
at the age of seventy-eight years.
In 1882 John W. Duncan was united in marriage to Miss Annie Berry, a daughter of George Berry of
Amity Township (see sketch), and they have had born to them three children:
1. George W., was born October 7, 1883;
2. Robert L. was born August 12, 1885, and
3. Agnes J. was born January 10, 1890. The parents are members of the United Presbyterian Church ...

Later by 1900 JOHN WILEY and ANNA R. (BERRY) DUNCAN lived North of
the Berry Hill farm on a 160 acre farm on Section 33 of Harlan Township,
they had five children born from this union, all of JOHN WILEY & ANNA
R. (BERRY) DUNCAN's children attended the Pleasant Ridge School-House
located about 1/2 mile to the north of their farm, on Mr. M. J. WILKEY's
property in Section 27.
In the 1900 Census JOHN WILEY and ANNA R. (BERRY) DUNCAN and all 5
children were living on their farm on Section 33, Harlan Twp., Iowa. JOHN
WILEY's sister JANE "JENNIE" E. and her husband ALEXANDER "ALEX" PINKERTON
were renting the farm (Section 23), Amity Twp., Iowa, from her brother

JOHN WILEY and ANNA (BERRY) DUNCAN's DEATH:
Mrs. ANNA ROBERTSON (BERRY) DUNCAN
died 12 Nov. 1947 at age of 84 years
and 3 months. 37 days later on 18 Dec. 1947, JOHN WILEY DUNCAN died
at the age of 87 years, 4 months and 14 days and They were laid to
rest together at the Maple Hill Cemetery, College Springs, Iowa. Section
III, Row 7, Lot 3. (JOHN W. DUNCAN' S brother ALEX. DUNCAN is buried
in Lot 2)
It has been reported (by George ANNAN to this writer, 1991) that they
both died from a gas leak at their home, on "DUNCAN" road 3 miles west
of Shambaugh.

John DUNCAN, 88 DIES -
Monday Dec. 22, 1947

John DUNCAN, 88 died Thursday night at his home, west of Shambaugh
of the effect of coal gas poisoning nearly two months ago, following
his wife in death by five weeks.
Services for Mr. DUNCAN, were held Sunday afternoon, at the United
Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. A.A. Kesley in charge. He had
been bedfast since he and Mrs. DUNCAN were overcome by fumes from
their heating stove late in October. Mrs. DUNCAN died Nov. 12.
Funeral services was conducted at the United Presbyterian church in
College Springs at 2:00 o'clock, Sunday afternoon 21 Dec. 1947 by
their pastor, the Rev. A. A. KELSEY.

both are buried in the Birchwood Addition at the Clarinda City Cemetery;
She went to Rice, Butler, Olive Branch Elem School houses; Attended Amity
College; Was a school teacher at Shady Brook; They were members of the
United Presbyterian church of College Springs; WALTER DUNCAN was a Elder
at the Trinity U.P. church at Clarinda, Iowa; In the 1910 Census farmed
237.05 acres land, (South of "Duncan" Road) across from his fathers farm
on Sec. 3, Amity Twp. (the original "Berry Hill" home place was west of them);
they retired to 422 North 14th St. Clarinda, Iowa where they remained
until their death; They had three children born from this union:

suicide, it has been reported that LOWELL had just warmed up the
baby bottle of his only son ROYCE E. DUNCAN (who was 8 months old
at the time) and quietly left the house and went out to the barn
and hanged himself, Earlier in his life, he had crushed his head while
loading cattle in a truck and had terrible headaches afterward. The
doctors told him to quit work for six months and not even think -
he couldn't do it; LOWELL K. DUNCAN was involved with sports as a
young man, football, basketball, and track awards; was a farmer in
Amity Twp. 1933 to 1955; Raised purebred Hampshire hogs, and many
awards for growing the best yield DeKalb Corn for several years; Was
a trustee of the United Presbyterian church at College Springs, Iowa;
Married on 31 Aug. 1937, at Clarinda, Iowa, to
MARY "LEONE" ROPP;

A. DONALD DUNCAN was one of Lincoln, Nebraska's most
prominent businessmen, he was chairman of DUNCAN Aviation, Inc. of
Lincoln, a company which he founded. The company was one of the largest
and most respected general aviation centers in the world, with over
300 employees. A. DONALD DUNCAN was regarded as one of the world's
leading salesmen of private jets, having sold over 330 Lear jets.
A. DONALD DUNCAN began farming in Page County, Iowa in 1938, and continued
farming while establishing an Automobile agency in Clarinda in 1948.
DUNCAN Motors was located in the present City Hall location (1981).
In 1956, he began and aviation business in Omaha, Nebr. which remained
their until 1968. The present business location in Lincoln, Nebr.
was started in 1963. His local business interest continue to include
farming and more recently, banking, serving as a director and part
owner of "Citizens State Bank" in Clarinda, Iowa and also part owner
of "Farmers Savings and Loan" in Fremont, Iowa.

THE FAMILY OF DONALD DUNCAN ... former owner of the Citizens
State Bank, who passed away last year, unveiled a sculpture in his
memory last Thursday. The sculpture will reside in the front window
of the bank. Shown with the sculpture were Mr. DUNCAN's children,
DIANNE (DUNCAN) THOMAS, of Omaha, ROBERT DUNCAN, of Lincoln and KATHRYN
(DUNCAN) THOMPSON of Clarinda. The sculpture is untilted, Mrs THOMPSON
saying that each person viewing the artwork could make their own
interpretation. The sculpture was done in sandstone by GEORGE D. TURNER
and was purchased in Aspen, Co.
