My Mother, who was only 5 years old when her Great-GrandMother Catherine "Louisa" (Drace) WILSON, died on 26 Mar 1921, at the age of 77yrs states that her father Ermal L. WILSON says his GrandFather Henry DRACE, grew up in the northern uncertain boundary of Germany. He was handsome bluff, hearty, outgoing, an exuberant who in his boyhood had liked to stand on his head and play the harmonica (a recent German invention). As a grown man he laughed a great deal but spoke his opinion vigorously when he thought he should. GrandMother Mary Elizabeth (Synder) DRACE was pretty, quite, and thoughtful, and followed a not uncommon German custom of subservience to one's husband. What ever Henry DRACE did was all right with her.

Some controversy and confusion arises when one attempts to name, locate and established a Capital of the State and Zones in Germany. The place of Henry DRACE birthplace is in the (then) British Zone (United Kingdom Zone) of the former state of Hammburg, portions of the former states of Brunswick, OLDENBURG, Schaumburg-Lippe, and Lippe. For administrative purposes the zone has been divided into four states:
      (1.) Schleswig-Holstein, Capital is Kiel.
(2.) LOWER SAXONY, Capital is Hannover.
(3.) North Rhine-Westphalia, Capital is Diisseldorph.
      (4.) Hammburg. Capital is Hammburg.

THE MIGRATION FROM GERMANY TO AMERICA:
Culturally the, Germans during the seventeenth century had been influenced by the French civilization in the age of Louis XIV. The language, music, philosophy, customs, art, and architecture of France were the fashion in Germany. Until 1871 there was no united Germany. There was only a group of thirty or more separately governed and rather fluid states, duchies, principalities, and independent cities. Conflicts among these were frequent. Religious persecution was by no means rare, and a sect accepted in one place might be jailed a few miles away.

This migration story is about four families that stayed together through many hardships and many miles. The ANNAN'S, DRACE, RENTKER Families.

The ANNAN/RENTKER family left Germany for America first, about 1833-4 and arrived at the Port in Baltimore, Maryland and located at Hagerstown, Maryland until 1836, at this time they relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio. It is reasonable to assume that they had to spend the first two years to repay the passage. This indenture was quite frequent.

To get to the ships harbored in the North Sea, often it was a tearful experience, to leave your families and homeland. The following account is dated 1824 -
...It is one of my recollections of my boyhood that one summer night our whole village, I say our village for I was born on my fathers farm not far from the village of Oldenburg. That night our neighbors were pressing around a few wagons covered with linen sheets and loaded with household utensils and boxes and trunks to their utmost capacity. One of our neighboring families was moving far away across the great water, and it was said they would never again return. And I saw silent tears trickling down weather- beaten cheeks, and the hands of rough peasants firmly pressing each other, and some of the men and women hardly able to speak when they nodded to one another a last farewell. At last the wagon train started into motion, they gave three cheers for AMERICA....,and then in the first gray dawn of morning I saw them winding their way over the hill until they disappeared in the shadow of the forest. And I heard many a man say how happy he would be if he could go with them to that great and free county where a man could be himself...Someday I to am going to AMERICA.
LS\ Henry DRACE

Henry DRACE made his dream come true some 13 years later. Henry DRACE SR. & MARY ELIZABETH (SYNDER) DRACE family. The John F. DRACE & ELIZABETH C. RENTKER family, ( John F. and Henry Sr. were brothers, Elizabeth C. and Anna Catherine were sisters) along with the girls mother Mrs. RENTKER (first name unknown) joined them in Cincinnati, Ohio, between the dates after 1836 before 1839. Their were only two daughters in the RENTKER family, their father (Name Unknown) died in Hannover, Germany after a long illness of rheumatism of 11 years.

THE RELOCATION TO BROWNSTONE TWP. JACKSON CO., INDIANA: About the Fall of 1840 their were four families that left Cincinnati, Ohio and removed to Jackson County, Indiana.

The John F. ANNAN & ELIZABETH C. (RENTKER) family with three young children Henry A.F. age 6, CATHERINE E. (II), age 4 years of age and John F. Jr. age 1 year old. ELIZABETH C. (RENTKER) ANNAN was heavy with child.

The Brother John F. DRACE & CATHERINE E. (RENTKER) family with one young child ELIZA, age 4 years of age.

The Henry & MARY E. (SYNDER) DRACE family with one young baby 1st. Daughter MARY E. DRACE, age 8 months.

Mrs. RENTKER (Anna E. and Catherine Rentker's mother) at age 50 years.

The FRISCHE family; No more information.

These families all purchased heavy timber land in the Brownstone Township, area of Jackson County, Indiana. Here they had to clear a place large enough to build small cabins, for protection from the winter eliminates that were upon them. These one and two room cabins had to be built with their own hand tools, from the Cottonwood trees on their land. MARY ELIZABETH ANNAN the fourth child and second daughter of John F. & CATHERINE (RENTKER) ANNAN was born on Christmas day that winter of 1840. Mrs. RENTKER (Anna E. and Catherine Rentker's mother) did not survive that winter, she died in January, 1841, at age 51 years.

These rugged pioneers continued to clear, cut, save and burn the trees and vegetation to plow and plant their spring crop for the next year. They survived that first winter and faced numerous other achievements of pioneers life and extraordinary experiences for the next 15 years in this Valley. The only neighbors were roving bands of Indians, although they were peaceful, they would pilfer food when an opportunity offered, especially in the winter. Deer and fowl were plentiful. Corn meal was the staple for bread instead of flower. The work day started before daylight and continued into the night. The men worked in the fields and hunted game. The women of the families made soap, molded the candles, and wove the cloth.

By 1855 the WESTWARD movement fever caught them again. This little village had a circuit Doctor by the name of Dr. H. C. BRANDIT. One spring he had just returned from Page County, Iowa where he bought some land and was telling every one how rich and fertile this land was. On the 14th of April 1855, the two DRACE families and Henry FREDERICK ANNAN's family sold out of Brownstone Twp., Jackson County, Indiana. With each family having a horse and ox team, and 50 head of cattle together, headed west to Page County, Iowa.

RELOCATION TO PAGE COUNTY, IOWA:
The small caravan of these three families left Brownstone Twp., Jackson County, Indiana on 14th of April 1855, for a long and tedious journey, crossing bleak prairies and fording streams. They crossed the Mississippi River at Burlington, Iowa on a ferry boat. They arrived in Page County, Iowa, 1 month, and 18 days later on 2nd of June 1855

EARLY LIFE IN PAGE COUNTY, IOWA:
In the 1860 Census, Henry age 59 and MARY E. (SYNDER) DRACE, age 54 and 6 of their 7 children (WILLIAM DRACE would have been about 17 years old in this Census, was not listed) were farming in Tarkio Twp., Page Co., Iowa. The Post Office was listed as the Village of Tarkio. Their farm was 3 farm visitations away from ROBERT M. DUNCAN and MARY ANN (ALEXANDER) DUNCAN's farm. ( Son Robert Alexander Duncan later married Rachel Pinkerton, one of their daughters VERA B. DUNCAN married ERMAL L. WILSON, Grandson of ABRAHAM & LOUISA (DRACE) WILSON, this writers Grandfather.)
