3,275.92 Nautical Miles, Denmark, Norway to New York, NY USA - Click on Thumbnail for Larger Photo!  CHRISTENSEN/MADISON Passage to America!
By 1850, according to U. S. Census reports, there were only 18,075 persons of Scandinavian birth in the United States, two thirds of whom were Norwegians. The total quadrupled in the next decade, reaching a half million in the 1880s, and had passed a million in 1900. The Swedes outnumbered the Norwegians by 573,000 to 337,000, and there were only 154,000 Danes.
Passage to America  It is not known when Nels B. CHRISTENSEN left the homeland of Denmark, but it was prior to his marring in 1868 and her two year contract to pay back her passage. Miss Anna KRISTINA MADISEN left her homeland at "Nyhavn Harbor," in Copenhagen, Denmark on the Norwegian ship-line the "Ottawa" and arrived in New York Harbor, New York, New York USA. on the "07th Sep 1866" She had one of her brothers on this voyage. The Nautical Milage of this passage was 3,275.92 miles.

About 1871 per Click on RedBall for More Info. on this Source [REF:#3] they had accumulated a little money through farm labor and the Blacksmithing, so with their 2 years old son MADISON "Peter" CHRISTENSEN they relocated by covered wagon to Page Conty, Iowa.

"They purchased 160 acres of raw land on which a dwelling was erected and for four years (1875) they made that their home. Mr. CHRISTENSEN carefully cultivating the fields. at length, however, he sold the property and bought another farm of 160 acres. It was a tract of raw land, not a furrow having been turned nor an improvement made upon the place, but with characteristic energy he began its development, erected buildings there which furnished ample shelter for grain and stock and for a long number of years made the place his home."

At one time Nels B. CHRISTENSEN had over 364.74 acres of land all in Section 1 and 2 in the North East corner of Washington Twp. It had Prairie wolves, a few deer, lots of prairie chickens, and quail which provided plenty of game. After his home was built in 1872, the ground was plowed for corn, wheat, and oats. The first crop was prairie hay. A mower was a great luxury. Many neighbors going together would buy one and use it far into the night, so that all would get to use it. After the hay was stacked Nels would plow around it many times in case of fire. Much of this prairie land had acres and acres of covered Rosin and Gum plants that would burn like a torch. When a fire got started, not even the Tarkio Rivers could stop it.
"Nels" got along very well with the Americans, whether Danish are not. His physical strength and the high spirits that had returned after he left Denmark made him well-liked. His new friends and his ownership of enough land to support, even modestly, his large family gave him peace and contentment.
But Anna K. (Madisen) CHRISTENSEN reminds this writer of much like BERET, the Scandinavian wife in O. E. ROLVAAG's novel "Giants in the Earth". which America had little for her. Like BERET she felt herself a stranger in a strange land. No close neighbors spoke a tongue that she could understand. The forms and rituals of the Page County, Iowa church were wrong, and anyway Nels would rather put up hay than go there. Their farm house was much too small for a family of 12, and a smelly livestock shelter was fastened European-fashion to its southeast side to protect the pigs, cattle, and horses against the north and northwest winds that pushed across the waves of Iowa prairie land in the winters. The winds howled unlike any Danish winds she had ever heard. They heaped snow higher than the fences. Anna and the smaller children hovered around an inadequately fueled stove, for wood was scarce and dried cow chips were not entirely satisfactory substitutes. Nels and the older boys would be outdoors except in the worst weather repairing fences, cutting wood, caring for the stock, occasionally going to the village of Coin, Lincoln Twp. some 2 miles Northeast for supplies, but Anna lived with quarreling children in an ugly little house buffeted by wind that she felt would never stop

As gradually became true of BERET, "Hidden forces were taking the children from her", so was true of Mrs. Anna K. (MADISEN) CHRISTENSEN, as once her children were old enough to escape the house. The younger ones sometimes played with American children a mile or two away, and for two or three months a year the children skipped gladly to the small school house which was located on Mr. CHARLES HART property about 1 and 1/4 mile south of their farm house in the Click on Redball for More Info.<--- "North Liberty School District".
The children would return with skills that Anna did not have and information that she did not believe or want to possess. The older ones were soon working as hired men or hired girls and keeping company with other young men or young women whose ways were not Mrs. Anna K. (MADISEN) CHRISTENSEN's ways.

As Rolvaag said of the Scandinavian "BERET" and never did Anna hear them so much as mention what pertained to them as Scandinavians....At times, as she listened to their talk, she would fall to woundering whether she actually was their mother their language was not hers.

She continued to learn her English language by reading from a copy of the scriptures which had one half of each page printed in the Danish and the other half in English. After learning in this way to read English, she bought a new bible printed in the English language. She formed the habit of reading from this Bible several times each day as a means of recreation and spiritual instruction, continuing this practice long after she had to give the pleasure of other kinds of reading.

Mrs. A. K. CHRISTENSEN is a resident of Coin and in addition to the town property which she owns she has a fine farm of one hundred and sixty acres in Washington township. A native of Denmark, she was born in 1847 of the marriage of Madison and Carrie (Henderson) Madison, both of whom died in Denmark. Mrs. A.K. CHRISTENSEN spent her girlhood days there and when nineteen years of age came to the United States with her brother, settling in Illinois. In 1868 she gave her hand in marriage to N. B. CHRISTENSEN, also a native of Denmark, born April 18, 1840. The wedding was celebrated in Illinois, where they resided until 1871, when they came to Page county, Iowa, where Mrs. A.K. CHRISTENSEN has since lived. They purchased one hundred and sixty acres of raw land on which a dwelling was erected and for four years they made that farm their home, Mr. N.B. CHRISTENSEN carefully cultivating the fields. At length, however, he sold the property and bought another farm of one hundred and sixty acres. It was a tract of raw land, not a furrow having been turned nor an improvement made upon the place, but with characteristic energy he began its development, erected building's there which furnished ample shelter for grain and stock and for a long number of years made the place his home. ' As he prospered in his undertakings he added to his holdings until in addition to the home farm he owned three hundred and twenty acres, which at his death was divided among the children. He was quite prosperous in his business career, basing his [Pg286] business principles upon the rules which govern unfaltering energy and strict unswerving integrity. He was seldom at fault in matters of business judgment and his success was honorably won. He continued a resident of this county up to the time of his death, which occurred May 9, 1888. The community thereby lost a representative farmer, the county a reliable citizen. his neighbors a faithful friend and his family a devoted and loving husband and father.
Unto Mr. and Mrs. A.K. CHRISTENSEN have been born nine children.

The "Widow" Anna K. (Madison) CHRISTENSEN lived on Broadway St. in Coin, except for intervals when she spent in the homes of her children. About 1927-8 at the age of 80 years she went lived with her son Charles CHRISTENSEN family at Fullerton, Nebr. where she received loving care. Feeling that her time on earth was limited, she desired to return to the Coin, Iowa community where she had enjoyed so many close friend-ships. She returned to live with her daughter Mrs. Carrie (Christensen) GAMBLE south of Coin, ( Section 9, Colfax Twp.) This privilege she enjoyed about one week, when she was stricken with paralysis from which she never recovered, and just one week from the day of her stroke she departed to be with her Savior.

The State of Iowa "Certificate of Death" Number A73-199, Registered No. 73-7 States the Dr. EDWARD LUKE, of Coin, Iowa attended Anna K. (Madison) CHRISTENSEN on 24th. July, 1930 to 28th. July, 1930. He last say her alive on 27th. July, 1930, and pronounced her dead at 1:00 O'clock a.m. on the morning of 28th. July,1930. Dr. Edward LUKE listed as Apoplexy (Cerebral Hemorrhage) as the primary cause of death, with Arteris Selerosis as the secondery cause.
[Apoplexy is a sudden loss of consciousness followed by paralysis caused by hemorrhage into the brain. The Cerebral Hemorrhage is the result of a rupture of a Sclerosed or diseased blood vessel in the brain.]
Her Daughter Mrs. Carrie (Christensen) GAMBLE was the informant on the Certificate. It's interesting to note she did not know the name of her Grandmother Anna K. (MADISEN) CHRISTENSEN mother's maiden name. Anna K. (Madison) CHRISTENSEN was one of the strong early pioneers, that has made this country as strong as it is today. Born and matured to adulthood in her home land of Denmark, migrated to America, traveled west to the plains of Iowa. Living the hardships of being a widow for so many years. She had no convinces, and probably would not have wanted them because there were none in Denmark in her girlhood days. Nels on the other hand would have welcomed electric lights, milking machines, gasoline engines, and of coarse football. The love and regard of her children and appreciation of her neighbors, testified to the high esteem in which she was held.... prsjr

The Tragic Story of Uncle William,1 CHRISTENSEN
Uncle William, married the Mrs Ora D. (Spencer) GREGG, in 1898, per 1900 Census. this 1900 Census listed as "Owning Farm", being married for two years with no children, but, he had a "Step-Son" George GREGG, age 8yrs living with him? Owning their farm with a Mortgage, this farm was two farm visit away from William's mother Anna K. (Madisen) CHRISTENSEN in Washington, Twp. Page Co., Iowa; Mrs Ora D. (Spencer) GREGG, CHRISTENSEN, died the next year in 1901 while giving birth to Alfred Wm. CHRISTENSEN. Uncle William,1 was so overcome with grief, that he abanden his son, and moved to Cedar, Nance Co., Nebraska where his brother Charles had moved to. The Son Alfred Wm. was raised by his Grandmother A.K. (Madison) CHRISTENSEN, never spoked to his father again.

We have several different reports of what happened to Uncle William,1 one says (A.K. Obit. 1930) "that William, relocated to Fullerton, Nebr. along with younger brother Charles CHRISTENSEN" another (Bio. Sketch - 1909) "says he was a School Teacher in Dubuque, Iowa - 1909". another [CHJ 07 Jun 1937] says he Graduated from Highland College, Des Moines, Iowa"

was formed as an independent kingdom in the ninth century and is one of the oldest monarchies in Europe. Throughout history its northern exposure has made it the Bridge between the Continent and Scandinavia. The country of Denmark has a length (north-south) of only 224 miles and a width (east-west) of 297 miles; however, its coastline, because of the many islands and the indented character of the mainland, measures 4,622 miles. Its surrounded on three sides by water, with a flat terrain (highest elevation point is 564 feet) with thousands of island. The country has a typical seacoast atmosphere and its people the "DANES" have always been drawn to marine activities.

Denmark is popularly included in "Scandinavia" although not part of the Scandinavian peninsula. Denmark with its many islands has only one land boundary, to the south with Germany, 42 miles in length. Most of this southern boundary passes through Kiel Bay, the Fehmarn Strait, and the Baltic Sea. To the east its boundary with Sweden traverses the Ore Sound and the Kattegat. To the North the Skagerrak separates Denmark from Norway. The North Sea forms the Western boundary.

 ETHNIC ORIGINS:
Wandering Germanic tribes - Angles, Saxons, and Danes - settled in Denmark during the first centuries of the Christian era. Migrations from the south have been absorbed through the centuries, and only a slight variance in physique, speech, and ethnic characteristics can be detected today. Danish is the official language of the country, although German is also spoken in the southern part of Jutland. The state religion is Lutheran.

The common culture of all the Scandinavian people indicates a similar origin. The Danes first established themselves in Jutland about 10,000 B.C. Tools and other objects have been found show the Danes had a high degree of culture in the Bronze Age (c. 1500-400 B.C.) by establishing relations with Europe. At the time of the Roman Empire the Danes had a form of clan government, animistic religious practices, some laws, and a predominantly mythological literature.

The Cambri, who migrated from Jutland, brought the Romans into contact with the northern tribes of Danes, and the continual pressure which they exerted upon the Roman Empire forced the creation of defenses. In the fifth Century of the Christian Era the Angles and Jutes of Denmark invaded what now is England, and the mixture of groups made the composite from which modern England is today.

 MEDIEVAL PERIOD:
During the Ninth Century the Danes took a leading role in the "Viking" raids in England, France and Spain. The Viking leaders RAGNAR LODBOK (Regner Lodbrog) and ROLLO concentrated their efforts on the area near the Seine River in France, which in 911 became the Duchy of Normandy under ROLLO's control, and eventually Normandy was created. ALFRED the GREAT tried to fend off Danish attacks in England, but succeeded only tempering the severity of the raids by surrendering a portion of eastern and northeastern England to the Danes. This Danish area was known as the Danelaw.

Various rulers extended Danish control throughout England and brought unity to Denmark during the remainder of the Eleventh Century. Following the Civil Wars of the Twelfth Century, a new enmey, the Wends, threatened the invasion of Jutland.

This "CHRISTENSEN" family is of the Danish lineage of great antiquity. It is believed that it is derived from the:
"son of CHRISTEN. A Scandinavian name ending in:
-son is most likely to be Swedish but may be Norwegian.
One ending in -sen is most normaly Danish or Norwegian."

Even into the Nineteenth Century some Scandinavian would changes names from one generation to the next according to the first name of the father. ie.
LAR CHRISTEN's son: Nels would be Nels LARSEN (Nels son of Lar)
Nels LARSEN's      son: HANS would be HANS NelsSEN (Hans son of Nels)
HANS NelsSEN's    son: CHRISTEN would be CHRISTEN HANSSEN (Christen son of Hans)
CHRISTEN HANSSEN's son: PETER would be PETER CHRISTENSEN (Peter son of Christen)
It's interesting to note that the oldest son Madison "Peter" CHRISTENSEN, was named after his mother's maiden name of MADISEN but all records found list his spelling as MADISON.
