James S. BROWNLEE was born at the time this country was going through one of the most clamtic times in history the Civil War. (1861-1865). The County he was born in (Marion County, Ohio) was formed from Crawford County in 1821. It is located in the Northwest center of the State. It's North boundry is Wyandot & Crawford Counties; East by Morrow County; South by Delaware & Union Counties; West by Hardin County.

OHIO the BUCKEYE STATE is 41,222 Square Miles, the Capital is Columbus, Motto is With God, All Things Are Possible. Was entered into the Union, Mar. 01, 1803; ranked 17th. Ohio is the nation's 3rd greatest industrial state; it ranks among the wealthier states in livestock and crop receipts, and is a leader in output of lime, coal, and coke. LaSalle first visited the Ohio area in 1669; American furtraders arrived, beginning in 1685. The French and Indians sought to drive the traders and trappers out. During the Revolution Virginians defeated the Indians in 1774, but hostilities were renewed in 1777. The region became U.S. territory after the Revolution. First organized settlement was at Marietta in 1788. Indian warfare ended with Anthony Wayne's victory at Fallen Timbers in 1794. In the War of 1812 Oliver H. Perry's victory on Lake Erie and William H. Harrison's invasion of Canada in 1813 ended British incursions.
