Biographical History of Guernsey Ohio 1890 [REF:#2]
by Charles A. Hanna
JOHN ALEXANDER, Sr.'s early life was spent in securing the rudiments of an education, and in his "teens" he learned the weavers trade, which he combined with farming. One of the oldest towns in Ireland is Carrickfergus, which is situated in Antrim, the county of the nine glens, the town holds many ancient fortifications and is supposed to have derived its name from carrig, a rock, and FEARGUS MacERC, an Irish King. FEARGUS MacERC was the first Irish king of Scotland and is thought to have been drowned off the Irish coast some three hundred years after the birth of Christ. In the time of ELIZABETH, Carrickfergus was a strategic location in the British campaign to curb the Irish. It was in this harbor that WILLIAM III, Prince of Orange, landed in 1690 to take control of Ireland. Here too, in 1778, PAUL JONES, commanding the American ship Ranger, defeated the English naval vessel the Drake.
JOHN ALEXANDER, Sr.'s 1st. MARRIAGE: age 35 on 10 Oct. 1820, while still a resident of Ireland he married the 33 years old Miss. MARY ALLEN, who was born about 1789, a resident of his native county of Ireland.
Little is known of MARY ALLEN's parents or family, it is believed that her sister HANNA JANE ALLEN, b. about 1800, Ireland was the 2nd. wife of Mr. MATTHEW ANDREWS.

(Sutro F497 H5 C5 1891a; Pg 565-6) [REF:#4.]Janes ALEXANDER, a most successfuul agriculturist was born March 18, 1829, on the farm on which he resides, in Freeport Twp., Harrison Co., Ohio.
His father John ALEXANDER, was born in County Antrim, Ireland, where his life was spent in securing the radiments of an education, and in his "teens" learning the Weaver's trade, which he combined with farming. While yet a resident of Ireland he was married to Mary ALLEN, a resident of his native county. There the young couple remained forsome time, but finally concluded to do as so many of their race had done -- come to America. Accordingly in 1826, they embarked in a sailing vessel, and after a tedious voyage of nine (9) weeks they arrived in Philadelphia., PA. They remained in Pennsylvania till 1828, when, with their family, they came to Freeport Township, Harrison Co., Ohio, where Mr ALEXANDER entered 80 acres of the farm at present [1891] owned by our subject. On this he erected the ordinary log cabin, of small dimensions and not very elaborate in its finishings, and he and his fathful wife struggled with the difficulties which the pioneers all had to endure, uncomplainingly toiling on to improve and beautify the home.
The children born to their marriage were as follows:
Eleanor, (decessed)
Thomas, (of Jacobsport)
Jesse, (decessed)
Mary Ann, (decessed)
John, (in Kansas)
James (Our Subject)
Hannah J. (decessed) and
Elizabeth, (in Kansas)
For many years Mr. ALEXANDER was one of the active political leaders in this section, and firmly believed in and advocated the principles of the Whig party. He, however, was not an office seeker, and would never accept political preferment. A leading member of the United Prespyterian Church at Londonderry, OH., he was also one of its founders.
In June 1869, he died, and was laid beside his wife, who had departed this life in 1838, and they now sleep in the cemetery at Londonderry.

MIGRATION TO AMERICA:
It is believed that JOHN, Sr. & MARY (ALLEN) ALEXANDER did as many of the Irish had done - came to America. Prior to 1823, where their first son was born, although in CHARLES A. HANNA book the Historical Collections of Harrison County, Ohio reports it was in 1826, all other records show prior to 1823. JOHN, Sr. and MARY (ALLEN) ALEXANDER, embarked on a sailing vessel, and after a tedious voyage of nine weeks they arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the middle of summer when it was extremely hot and humid. The MONROE DOCTRINE which opposed European intervention in the Americas was enunciated later that year on Dec. 2, 1823. They remained in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for some six years. (1823 to 1826)

LaSalle first visited the Ohio area in 1669; American fur-traders arrived, beginning in 1685. The French and Indians sought to drive the traders and trappers out. During the Revolution, Virginians defeated the Indians in 1774, but hostilities were renewed in 1777. The region became U.S. territory after the Revolution. First organized settlement was at Marietta in 1788. Indian warfare ended with Anthony Wayne's victory at Fallen Timbers in 1794. In the War of 1812 Oliver H.
