printed by The Odebolt Chronicle May, 1977)

The Profit farm located east of Odebolt was purchased by Samuel Enfield Smith from Asa Beale Smith in 1875.

Samuel Enfield Smith's parents were John and Sarah (Mummey) Smith.

Sarah Mummey, daughter of Joshua and Catherine Mummey, was born in Morgan County, Ohio in 1822 and died in her home in Odebolt in 1921. In 1842 she married John Smith.  Their children were Nancy (Mrs. John Searight); Samuel Enfield, Kathryn (Mrs. Leoline Draper), and Mary Evelyn (Mrs. Mazzini Barkley). In 1863 they moved to Clinton County, Iowa, where her husband, John, died in 1871. In 1874, she and her children came to Sac County, Iowa where her parents, Joshua and Catherine Mummey were keeping house for John Draper. At that time there were only three houses in that neighborhood, the Fox home, the Drapers and the Sherwoods. East of Sherwoods there was a ford across the Boyer River and only a trail to Fletcher (Now Lake View), and another trail from there to Sac City.

Samuel Enfield Smith was born in 1847 in Ohio, and died in 1932. He married Paulina Knight. They were the parents of Nellie; William; John; Lucetta; Emery Enfield; Clifford; and Arthur Edward.
