Ulysses S. Hill Family

The below photos are of the Hill family, and were sent in by Conley Wolterman of Ida Grove.  Conley photographs gravestones from area cemeteries and places them on-line as a genealogy act of kindness.  A woman in California, Linda Ruff, had found and bought the photos in a store in California.  She searched the Internet until she found their gravestone information and emailed the photos to Conley.  Conley then forwarded the scanned photos to me for inclusion on The Odebolt History Pages.  Thanks to both of these women for their kindness and thoughtfulness in saving history.

This photo was formerly identified as Ulysses S. Hill.  However, family members in Odebolt sent word that this photo does not match any of the photos they have of Ulysses, and suggest that it is perhaps his father, John.  It is a very old photo taken in Maquoketa, IA.  If anyone can confirm who this man is, please let us know.

The farmstead was purchased from the railroad in 1884 by John Hill, who immigrated to America from England in 1851.  His eldest son, Ulysses S. Hill, married Charlotte Ann (McMillin) in 1887 and moved into the "old house" until 1908, when he built all new farmstead buildings and a new house.  The second generation to occupy the farm was Floyd Hill and his wife, Sylvia (Waggoner), married in 1915.  Their daughter Jean married John Ekstrom, and their son is the fourth generation to farm the land and live in the house.  A Century Farm plaque was presented to Jean (Hill) Ekstrom in 1984.
