Since the weather has settled into a semblance of summer climatic conditions and the roads have become more passable and enjoyable for driving Odebolt has become the mecca of a great many young men who drive cars or horses and are bent upon mashing.
It is the custom of most of the mashers to drive slowly about the city until they “spot” the right number of girls and then to annoy them by persistently inviting them to “come along.”
The climax was probably reached when several young men in a motor car stopped in front of a local church to ply their trade. They not only drove up to and accosted three girls but one of them hopped out and stood in their path to address his remarks more pointedly to them.
This was repeated a second time and a third time--on each occasion one of the mashers getting out of the car and stepping boldly in front of the girls in order to compell [sic] them to listen to what he had to say.
The mashers are becoming so bold that many young people will not travel the streets of Odebolt alone on Sunday evenings in this city.
It looks as though here were a new and real job for the newly appointed Humane Officer and a few assistants--to distribute themselves about the city in the favored haunts of the mashers and to catch them by the scruff of the neck and the seats of their trousers and heave them into Odebolt Creek or some other convenient but slimy hole.
