Made up of the Old Friends (Quaker) Cemetery, the Anti-Slavery Cemetery and two additions.
Sources include (1) 1989 Henry County Genealogical Society record, (2) Ron Shumaker’s 1992 record, (3) stones (4) Deaths Salem MM, Book A, 1839-1878, (5) HEQG, Salem MM, Iowa Volume VII and (6) Mrs. Simkins list of veterans. I also went on Ancestry for military, census and other Quaker record help.
As early grave were unmarked or now buried source marked (4) (5) (6), provides information believed lost.
*Besides my own chalked gravestone pictures I looked at stone pictures online at Iowagravestones.org and findagrave.com. (the latter has about all burials included for Salem South.)
-
CODE
- {Q0202} Q = Old Friends (Quaker) Cemetery-N side drive.
- 02=first two digits row, 02=second set digits, burial in row.
- Stones run N to S, rows start west side.
NE= E part-N side drive
*U*= Upper South section N ½ - S of drive-includes Anti-Slavery
* U3 - inside row by tree and U5 - inside start by tree *
**S = Lower South section-S 1/2 S of N Drive
**Names run South to North
SE = E side of drive
I believe I have 99% of stones. Total of 1648 names with some duplicates and some from Quaker records that no stone found for.
If name is not in cemetery book or no stone found, I use only if found in an obit, Quaker or military record.
If you don't see your relative and have such a record, let me know, and I will add the record.
To read old stones I always chalk them and I have white dixon railroad chalk for to use and rub the full 4" length over the names and dates.
http://dixoncsp.com/dixrailcrayc.html (I prefer white chalk, as colored may have dyes)

On the side of his stone it reads " The forerunners of western civilization and founder of Salem, Henry County, Iowa" and in smaller print " Sacred is the dust of the Christian pioneers who sowed the seeds of our prosperity and happiness and paved the way to our national greatness."
This monument was erected in 1885 by his children (many years after his death) and enclosed in an iron fence. It might have replaced a much smaller stone. He came to the Salem area in 1835 and choose the spot for the town which his son Aaron Jr and son-in-law helped lay out.
