Purpose
The Greene County Genealogical Society, formed in 1978,
is a non-profit, educational organization. Its purpose
is: (1) to foster and create an interest in genealogy,
(2) to preserve genealogical and historical data of our
ancestors, (3) to aid individual members in compiling
family genealogies, and (4) to improve and help maintain,
through contribution of members and the Society, the
genealogical reference sections of the public libraries
in Greene County. |

Research Policy
We offer one hour of free research to new members from
materials held by the Society. There is a charge of $10
per hour for minimal research to others. More extensive
research will be done by volunteers from our society,
with charges at the discretion of the volunteer. Upon
request, we will send names and addresses of those who
will research for a fee. Don't forget to send a SASE
(Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope).
Reference Library
The Society maintains an extensive reference room in the lower level of the Jefferson Public
Library. It is staffed by a volunteer on Wednesday 1 - 4 p.m. and Saturday 9 - 12 noon. Other times possible during regular library hours - phone the library ahead of time so they can arrange for a volunteer - 515.386.2835. The reference room contains all the Greene County publications, obituary scrapbooks, numerous family histories, 1935 Assessor's List indexed card file and much more. It also holds several "how to" books, plus information from several other counties in Iowa and information from other states. The room is equipped with a copy machine, film and
fiche reader and computer (on-line).
Membership Information
Membership in the Greene County Genealogical Society is
open to any person, organization or library interested in
the objectives of this Society, and in pursuing their own
personal genealogy.
Dues: Individual $7.50, Family $10.00
Please include name, address, phone number and list of
surnames you are researching. Members are asked to submit
a 4 or 5 generation ancestor chart for our research
files.
Meetings: January-November, 10 a.m., 1st Saturday,
Jefferson Public Library - December potluck to be announced.
Greene Gleanings
Our newsletter is published bi-monthly. In addition to
news and records of interest to genealogists, it contains
ancestor charts and free queries submitted by our
members.
Tree Tracings
This monthly column appears in two county newspapers. It
contains news of upcoming meetings, information to aid
the researcher and includes free queries.
Pioneer Certificates
Did you have an ancestor who lived in Greene County by
1870 or before? If so, contact Shirley Ross, Corresponding Secretary and Pioneer Certificate chairperson for an
application packet. Our Pioneer Certificate program was
started in 1996 to help commemorate Iowa's
Sesquicentennial. The certificates are on high quality, 8
1/2 x 11 parchment colored paper with brown lettering and
background sketch done by one or our members, Jeanne
Marchant Maxwell. They make excellent gifts
and are suitable for framing. What a wonderful way to
honor the memory of your ancestor!

- as well as indexes of obits/death notices in local papers.
The book, "Greene County Honor Roll",
compiled 1997 by Bill Kendall, is available for $3.00
plus $2.25 postage. It contains a list of veterans who
served from Greene County - Civil War to Desert Storm. To
