SPENCE

Bill Spence Updated 24 Nov 1997
South Fork Twp., Hopkinton {1860 Census) I have located my Great grandfather and grandmother William And Eliza SPENCE in the 1860 census from Delaware County, South Fork Twp. Iowa--PO address Hopkinton. They were Irish immigrants who apparently came to this Country in 1844, settled in New York, on to Henry Co., Il., where my grandfather Robert Henry was born, then on to Delaware County.  They had nine living children.  One remained in New York (I think) Through the Delaware Co. Genealogical Society, I have determined the burial place of my great grandparents and three other children, but would like to find out what happened to the rest of them, and perhaps where they emigrated from and where they settled in New York. A member of the Delaware Co. Gen. Soc. sent info she had uncovered--a death notice for William (Hopkinton Advertiser)1883, maps from 1869 and 1894 locating the family farm/s, and cemetery register from Hopkinton Cemetery locating grave cites for William, Eliza, and James Co G. 14th IA Inf, 2nt Lt. (born 1840 -6-23-63).  My grandfather settled in Ringgold County (Mount Ayr) which is my home town, and became a prominent attorney and Iowa Republican state chairman. None of my family every spoke of these people. Would like to know why, but not sure I will ever know that. Thanks for any help you can give.
