Eli Quam

Eli was born near Haugesund Norway to Elias & Johanna Kvamme at Aarek Norway Sept 7th 1889. He was the second of 4 sons and emigrated to America at the age of 17. He came to Elmore Minn to his uncle Gangstee and worked as a farmhand near Elmore and Ledyard Ia. At the age of 28 he rented a farm at Stevens, Ia and "Batched" for a few years, At the age of 33 he married the neighbor's daughter Hannah Splitt and they rented until 1930 when they moved to Grant Twp north of Swea City--buying 210 acres of fine farm land. The house was the first house built in Grant Twp. To this union was born 4 children---Morris 1926--1970----Robert 1930----residing in Winnetka, Ca---Ruth--1935--living in Colorado Springs Co---and Doris 1937 living in Rota, Spain.

Upon the return of Morris from the Pacific theater of the World War II Eli bought another farm in Eagle township---272 acres and the 3 men farmed both farms--raising crops--hogs--and milking quite a few cows. He was a very progressive farmer who was the first in the area to double crop the land yearly. He planted the 1st planting of peas every year for the Fairmont canning company and upon harvesting the last week of June or 1st week of July immediately worked the land and followed up with soybeans.

Eli died in 1970 and son Morris was killed in car accident 4 months later. Hannah kept the land and died in 2002 at the age of 99, The Quam burial plot is in Harrison township cemetery at Swea City.

Eli & Hannah were devout Christians and will be long remembered and their memory cherished by their surviving children--grand children-- and great grand children.
Eli was a Democrat who thought highly of F D Roosevelt.
