BARKER, Richard; Farmer; P. O. Colfax; born in Pennsylvania in 1802; came to Washington, N.Y. in 1812; thence to Ohio in 1835; thence to Indiana in 1839. Owns his residence in Colfax. Married Miss Ann ROWE in 1825; she was born in Madison Co., N.Y. in 1805. They have seven children - Elizabeth, Mary, Mariah, William, Ann, Eliza, Rebecca, Syble and James Z. Are members of the M. E. Church. Mr. Barker is a retired farmer. He came to Powesheik Tp., this county, when it was entirely new, there being but five settlers in the township.

Mitchellville; born in Ohio in 1841; came to Minnesota in 1846; thence to Van Buren Co., Iowa, in 1848; thence to Mahaska Co. in 1856, and to Jasper CO. in 1864. He owns 250 acres of land, valued at $50 per acre. Married Miss Alice M. J. EVERT in May 1869. She was born in Ohio Nov. 21, 1843, and died in Oct. 1872. He then married Miss Laura J. CHILDS in 1874. She was born in Medina Co., Ohio in 1844; they have one child - Bessie M., born in 1876. Republican; Township Trustee in Polk Co. Members of M. E. Church.

BROWN, James E.; Farmer; S. 31; P. O. Mitchellville; born in Van Buren Co., Iowa in Feb. 1851; came to Mahaska Co. in 1856; thence to Jasper Co. in 1864. Has 120 acres of land, valued at $55 per acre. Married Flora A. STARKS in 1873; she was born in St. Lawrence Co., N.Y. in Feb. 1854. They have three children - Nellie, Freddie and Eliza. Republican; he is a member of the M. E. Church.

Married Sarah BURNS in 1866; she was born in the State of New York in 1849. They have three children - Bailey, Mira and Buel. Is School Director. Democratic. Enlisted in the 2d Vt. V. I., Co. E., Capt. Bigsby; took part at Fredericksburg; then transferred to Veteran Reserve July 1, 1863, doing guard duty, escorting recruits, hospital duty, etc., until mustered out July 31, 1865.

CROFT, Martha J.; City Hotel, corner of Front & Walnut streets; Colfax; born in Vermont in 1829; came to Jasper Co. in 1867. Married Chester H. STONE in 1857; he was born in Vermont in 1820, and died August 1874. Then married Wm. M. CROFT; born in Ohio in 1838. Mr. Stone was among the early settlers of Jasper CO.; he built all the bridges on the R. I. R. R. from Kellogg to Des Moines, and all the county bridges of any importance. Mrs. Croft owns the Pacific as well as the City Hotel; also a house and lot at Newton. All the first religious services held at Colfax were held in her dining room.

CRAIG, S. R.; Farmer; S. 20; P. O. Mitchellville.

CROSS, Ammi W.; Butcher and Dealer in Live Stock; market on Walnut Street; Colfax; born in Maine Sept. 9, 1817. Came to Ohio in 1840; thence to Jasper Co. in 1855. He owns his residence, a house and lot on Walnut, his shop and forty acres of land, valued at $40 per acre. He married Miss Martha DREW in 1840; she was born in the State of Maine Jan. 22, 1816. They have five children - Rosilla, John M., Joseph D., Nancy and Freeman. Held office of Justice of the Peace, Trustee of Powesheik Tp., School Director for several years. Mr. Cross is one of the early settlers; broke ground on his farm of ninety acres himself; sold out in 1877; opened his present business in fall of 1877.

DAFT, W. H.; Farmer, Breeder, and Shipper of Poland-China Hogs; Sec. 22; P. O. Prairie City; born in England in 1842; emigrated to America in1847, and to Jasper Co. in 1868; has 160 acres of land, valued at $45 per acre. Married Ann BREMIN in 1865; she was born in England in 1839. They have four children - Clifton C., Clara M., Luctun and Stella. Republican. Held the Office of Secretary of School Board five years, and Justice of the Peace six years. Enlisted in 47th Illinois V. I. in 1865; took part in battles at Vicksburg, Corinth, Island No. 10 and skirmishes of lesser note; mustered out in 1864, at Washington, D. C. [Transcriber's note: The original in from which this transcription is taken lists 1865 as the enlistment date, and an EARLIER date of 1864 as the date for being mustered out.]

HERST in 1867; she was born in Indiana in 1848. They have five children - Ulysses S., Sarah B., Charles A., Eli E. and Lizzie E. Republican. Was one of the early setlers of the county, coming to Jasper when only 1 year old, receiving his early education in log school houses; has since attended school at Grinnell, Iowa.

ELLETT, Permella; Farming; Sec. 24; P. O. Colfax; born in Gallia Co., Ohio in 1817; came to Greene Co., Ind. in 1826; thence to Mashall Co., Iowa in 1856, and to Jasper Co. in 1857. Has 170 acres of land, valued at $45 per acre. Married Barton S. ELLETT in 1835; he was born in Fleming Co., Ky. in 1810; died in Greene Co., Ind. Dec. 21, 1855, leaving three children - Amanda, who died March 24, 1857; Elizabeth and Matilda. Mrs. Ellett is among the early settlers; came to Iowa a widow with three children, and has as fine a farm and as good buildings as any in the township.

GILBERT, James M.; Farmer; Sec. 25; P. O. Colfax; born in Russell Co., Va., Nov. 13, 1817 came to Jasper County in 1865, his father having moved to Carter Co., Ky. in 1827. Has 131 acres of land, valued at $50 per acre. Married Miss WILBURN in 1843; she was born in Virginia in 1826; died in November 1851, leaving one child - Sarah E., born in 1846. Then married Sarah J. AUFILL in November 1852; she was born in Kentucky, Oct. 5, 1830; they have six children - Mary E., John B., Martha J., William H., Mandy M. and Alden. Republican. Member of the Grange. He is a member of the Campbellite Church.

Has forty acres of land, valued at $30. Married Ellen GRADY in 1861; she was born in New York City in 1842. They have six children - John E., James H., Edward J., Florence, Mary and Elnora. Democrat; ember of the Catholic Church.

GRAHAM, Christian R.; Farmer; Sec. 34; P. O. Prairie City; born in Pennsylvania in 1835; came to Jasper County in 1870. Has 280 acres of land, valued at $50 per acre. Married Anna M. UZZELL in 1857; she was born in South Wales in 1837. They have four children - Christa, James, William and John. Republican. Has held the office of School Director since he first came to this county; President of the School Board at the present time; also Township Trustee. Member of Home Guards in Pennsylvania.

HASNESS, H.; Farmer and Stock Dealer; Sec. 34; P. O. Prairie City; born in Ohio in 1837; came to Jasper County in 1863; has forty acres of land, valued at $60 per acre. Married Adeline WILSON in 1865; she was born in Illinois in 1847. They have four children - George, Charles, Carrie and Pearl. Greenbacker. Drafted, in 1864, into the 10th Iowa Infantry; skirmishing, etc.; mustered out in Washington, D. C. in 1865. Mr. Hasness has been one of the heaviest stock dealers of the county, as well as a heavy grain dealer, until within three or four years; is dealing in horses at the present time.

HAYES, Daniel B.; Farmer and Stock Grower; Sec. 27; P. O. Prairie City; born in Henry Co., Ind., April 1, 1842; came to Jasper Co. in 1846; has 240 acres of land, valued at $65 per acre. Married Elizabeth PORTER in 1866; she was born in Indiana in 1842, and died in 1868. He then married Mary HENSLEY in 1871; she was born in Iowa in 1852; they have three children - Grace, Mercy and Peace. He is a Greenback Democrat. Has held the offices of School Director, Road Supervisor, and Justice of the Peace; held the office two terms, and resigned. Are members of the Christian Church. Was Master of Grange one year. Has just completed a house which is acknowledged to be the finest in this county; from the upper rooms of which one can see for twenty miles or more in any direction; as beautiful grove and as pleasant a place, generally, as the county affords.

Married Barbara GRAHAM in 1862; she was born in Pennsylvania in Dec. 1843. They have five children - Isaac T., Rebecca, Gertrude, Charles and Gracie. Democratic; she is a member of the M. E. Church. Enlisted in the 148th Penn. V. I. in 1862; participated in the battles of Chancellorville, Lookout Mountain, Fairview, Bull Run, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Culpeper Court House, Mine Run, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor and skirmishes; mustered out at Harrisburg, Penn. in 1865.

Church, Colfax; residence and office on Front St., Block 1, Lots 4 & 5; born in Clermont Co., Ohio in 1832; came to La Salle Co., Illinois in 1840; thence to Nebraska in 1871; thence to Jefferson Co, Iowa in 1874, and to Jasper Co. in 1877. Married Miss Marilla ROBBINS in 1852; she was born in Ohio in 1832, and died in Jan. 1868, leaving five children - Edwin L., Eva L., Henry R., John F. and Lotta H. He then married Miss Christina M. DUPRAY in 1874. She was born in Jackson Co., Iowa in 1852; they have one child - Raymond L. Republican in politics. Held the office of Superintendent of Public Instruction at former place of residence. Members of the M. E. Church. He is a member of the Brighton Lodge, No. 64, Masonic; also a member and officer of Sons of Temperance and Good Templars; was a member of the Union League during the war.

Has 200 acres of land, valued at $55 per acre. Married Mary J. SLAYDEN in 1857; she was born in Indiana in 1831. They have three children - James H., Lizzie and Joseph L. Republican. Member of the Board of Trustees three years. Members of the Congregational Church. Mr. Hume came to Iowa while it was yet a territory; followed trapping; carried the mail from Marengo to Iowa City on horseback; at times would have only one letter.

Walnut street; born in Muskingum Co., Ohio in 1849; removed to Hocking Co., Ohio in 1851; thence to Jasper Co. in 1865. Married Miss Gertrude in December 1876; she was born in Illinois in 1855. They have one child - Adelbert E., born in 1877. Republican. Enlisted in the 63rd O. V. I. in 1863; participated in the battles of Resaca, Kingston, Huntsville and Julesburg, where he was wounded; mustered out at Indianapolis in April 1865.

W.; Editor and Proprietor of the Colfax Journal; office on Walnut street; born in Warren Co., Illinois in 1853; came to Marion Co. in 1865; thence to Jasper Co. in 1877; attended Central University at Pella from 1872 to 1876; then came to Monroe, Iowa, and in company with J. H. Betzer, started the Monroe Times in March 1877; thence to Sheridan Co., Iowa, with Lucas Co. Republican, and on the 4th of January 1878, issued the first number of the Colfax Sentinel; was elected Principal of the school of Colfax.

Married Miss Anna M. TROTH in October 1877; she was born in Highland Co., OHio in 1853. Republican in politics. Has held the office of Town Treasurer; has been a member of the Board of DIrectors. Members of the Presbyterian Church. Enlisted in teh 1st Penn. Cav. in 1861; participated in the battles of Wilderness, was all through the battle of Gettysburg, and all the principal battles of the Eastern army; was mustered out at Philadelphia in September 1864.

KNIGHT, R. A.; Dealer in General Merchandise, Walnut street, COlfax; residence Des Moines, Iowa; born in Dummerston, Windham Co., Vt. in 1831; came to Des Moines, Iowa in 1862; had the largest and most extensive dry goods business in that city until Dec. 10, 1877; commenced business in Colfax in May 1877. Married Miss Lula E. LONGFELLOW in November 1875; she was born in Maine in 1848. They have one child - Randolph L., born in August 1876. Democratic; he is a member of the Episcopal Church; she is a member of the Congregational Church. He is a member of Masonic Lodge, Temple Commandery at Des Moines, a Knights Templar; also fraternity of Knights of Pythias.

KUHNS, Philip; Farmer; S. 32; P. O. Prairie City; born in Westmoreland Co., Penn., Jan. 22, 1839; came to Jasper Co. in 1851; has 320 acres of land, valued at $55 per acre. Married Miss Dora Ann BATLES in 1861; she was born in Vermont in 1844. They have seven children - Lydia, A. R., Eliza J., Viola, Nora, Emra, Archy and Ary. Greenbacker.

Then married Miss Harriet HAWKINS; she was born in the State of New York in 1839; they have five children - Wallace M., Frederick R., George W., Emma R. and Maud. Republican. Has held the offices of School Director, Township Trustee and Road Supervisor.

Mitchelville; born in Westmoreland Co., Penn. in 1832; came to Dubuque Co. in 1855; thence to McDonald Co., Illinois in 1857; thence to Lewis Co., Mo. in 1858; thence to Audrain Co., Mo. in 1860; to Scott Co., Iowa in 1861; to Cedar Co. in 1866, and to Jasper Co. in 1869. He has 160 acres of land, valued at $65 per acre. Elder in the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Love came to Iowa empty-handed, working by the month in Dubuque Co. at from $12 to $15 per month.
