ALLFREE, John W.; Farmer; S. 26; P. O. Newton; born in Fayette Co., Penn., July 1, 1833; where he lived until 20 years of age, when he moved to Knox Co., Ohio, and engaged in farming, which he followed for twelve years. He fitted himself for commercial pursuits at Duff's College, Pittsburgh, Penn., but never engaged in the business. Came to this county in Sept., 1865, and has since made it his home. Married Maria J. PHILIIPS Nov. 5, 1860; they have a family of six children - Colensa C., M. Nettie, Minnie E., Harry B. and Vinnie E. Mr. Allfree and his wife are members of the M. E. Church; in political matters, he takes an active part, and has always advocated the principles of the Republican party. He now holds the office of Justice of the Peace. CLEMENT, John; Farmer; Sec. 34; P. O. Newton, born in Butler Co., Ohio, May 5, 1830; lived there till 1846, when he moved to Cambridge, Indiana. Came to this county in the Fall of 1855, and has since made it his home. Married Martha WASSON May 9, 1851; they have had nine children, eight of whom are living. Mrs. C. died March 15, 1872. Mr. C.'s present wife was Mrs. Harriet J. GIST, whom he married August 4, 1872. Mr. C. and wife are members of the M. E. Church; in politics he is a Democrat. He has been quite unfortunate for the past two years, being confined to the bed in sickness most of the time. Owns a farm of forty-five acres, valued at $25 per acre, upon which there is a coal mine that is yielding about 2,000 bushels of coal per month.

FULLINGTON, A. H.; Farmer; Sec. 21; P. O. Colfax; born in Chittenden Co., Vt., Jan. 7, 1811; he lived in that county till 35 years old, and while there learned the trade of blacksmith and was engaged in the manufacture of wagons, buggies, and sleighs. In 1846, moved to Union Co., Ohio, and engaged in the dairy business, which he followed about fifteen years with good success. He followed farming till the Fall of 1865, and in April 1866, came to this county and located on his present farm. Married Miss Fannie BUELL Oct. 8, 1835; they have seven children living - Edgar B., born Sept. 6, 1838; Granderson J., Dec. 3, 1841; Jane E., April 19, 1848; Rollu F., May 13, 1851; Emma, Aug. 31, 1853; Kate, Nov. 11, 1855; Fannie, Nov. 5, 1859. Mrs. F. was born in Essex, Vt., May 6, 1817. Edgar B. and Granderson were both in the war; enlisted in Co. B, 32nd Ohio V. I., the former in September 1861, and served three years, and the latter in August 1862, and was mustered out May 29, 1865. Mr. F. is a Democrat in politics. Owns 320 acres of land, valued at $9,600.

HARTER, Mary A.; Farming; S. 17; P. O. Colfax, born in Hocking Co., Tenn.; her parents moved to Indiana when she was about 10 years old, and to Jasper Co., Illinois, when she was 14. Here she married Harvey GREEN; they had six children, five of whom are living - Cassey, Jane, Newton, Cynthia and Levi. Mr. G. died in 1858, and in 1859, she moved to this county, and was married to William HARTER in 1861. He died in 1877, and she now rents part of the land, and her son works part. The farm consists of 360 acres, valued at $35 per acre. Mrs. Harter's maiden name was DOTSON.

HERBOLD, Christ; Farmer; S. 22; P. O. Newton; born in Prussia, May 16, 1821; lived there until 34 years of age, engaged in farming. Came to America in 1856, and settled in Scott Co., Iowa, where he lived until 1869, when he came to this county. His former wife was Miss Mary HERBOLD; they had a family of four children - Henry, Helena, William and Christian. Mrs. H. died in December 1854. His present wife was Cristiana STOMAEN; they have six children - Eliza, Louis, Sophia, Minnie, Emel and Mary. Mr. H. and family are members of the Lutheran Church; politically, he is a Republican. Owns 640 acres of land, valued at $16,000. He is largely engaged in stock raising; has eighty to ninety head of cattle, and seventy-five to one-hundred head of hogs; has also on his place an orchard of about 300 trees.

KENDIG, Maria; Farming; S. 15; P. O. Box Colfax; born in Lancaster, Penn., Jan. 11, 1822; her parents lived in Petersburg. She married John KENDIG May 1841. He learned the blacksmith trade when young, and followed it for ten years after marriage; then he kept the "Silver Spring Hotel" at Silver Spring, Penn., for seventeen years. They came to this county in April 1868, and engaged in farming, which he followed till Oct. 19, 1877, when he died. Their family consisted of twelve children, nine of whom are living - Barbara, born July 20, 1846; Christian R., July 1, 1848; Lizzie, Feb. 15, 1850; John, Aug. 22, 1855; Franklin, April 9, 1857; Emma, July 25, 1859; Almira, Aug. 19, 1861; Ambrose B., April 28, 1863; Elmer E. April 6, 1867. Mrs. K. is now carrying on the farm with the aid of the boys; they have about 60 head of cattle, 100 hogs and an orchard of 300 trees; the farm consists of 360 acres, valued at $35 per acre.

KENNINGTON, Henry M.; Farmer; S. 23; P. O. Box Newton; born in Kilkenny Co., Ireland in June 1827. He came to America in 1849, and located in Springfield, Mass., where he lived two years, working at the machinist trade, which he learned in Ireland. In 1851, he removed to Dayton, Ohio, and continued working at his trade until 1853, when he moved to Bloomington, Illinois, and engaged in farming, and the following year came to this county and located on his present farm of 160 acres, which he values at $10,000. Pays considerable attention to stock raising; usually keeps forty to fifty head of cattle, and 150 head of hogs. In 1852, he married Miss Margaret SLAUGHTER; they have six children living - John M., Lawrence S., Sarah F., Carrie L., Dora May and Maggie. Mrs. K. is a member of the Disciple Church; politically, Mr. K. is a Democrat.

LANGMADE, S.; Farmer; S. 13; P. O. Box Newton.

LEEPER, John; Farmer; S. 35; P. O. Box Newton; born in Guernsey Co., Ohio, June 25, 1823; lived there until 1866, when he came to this county. He received a thorough common school education, and for several Winters followed teaching. Otherwise, he has always been engaged on a farm. Married Jeannet McCARTNEY Aug. 24, 1848; their family consists of nine children - William J., Albert G., Henry McCartney, Joseph W., Emma A., Mary E., Jennie A., Charles C. and Robert C. Mr. L. and wife are members of the United Presbyterian Church, in which he is a Ruling Elder; politically, he is a Republican; he has always taken an active interest in politics, having held various township offices since coming to this county, principally that of Trustee. In Ohio, he was a member of the militia, in which he held a commission as Lieutenant Colonel from Gov. Todd during the war, he was a Coroner and Enrolling Officer. Owns a farm of 380 acres of land, valued at $13,000. He is at present largely engaged in stock raising, having about 150 head of hogs, 100 head of sheep, sixty to seventy head of cattle, and ten to fifteen head of horses; is making a specialty of pure breeds, handling the Berkshire hogs, Durham cattle, and Cotswold sheep.

Box Metz; born in Fulton Co., N.Y., Oct. 29, 1833; when about twelve years old, he moved to Kendall Co., Illinois with his parents, and remained there until 1853, when he came to this county and located where he now lives. He has always been engaged in farming, and now owns 220 acres, valued at $6,600. He married Lucretia J. CANNON May 21, 1854. She was born in Bath Co., Ky., July 6, 1834. Has been a member of the Baptist Church for over eighteen years. Their family consists of four children living - William, Louisa, Nancy and Jessie. Mr. Miller is a Republican.

NOEL, D. W., & Co.; Grain and Lumber Dealers, Metz; this firm began business here is November 1877, and have since bought about 25,000 bushels of corn; they handle a general assortment of lumber of all grades, and are working up a fine trade. Mr. Noel is a native Iowan, born in Dallas Co., Feb. 28, 1851, and lived there until 1875, when he moved to Colfax and engaged in the lumber business, and in 1877, to Metz. His partner still continues the business in Colfax. Mr. N.'s parents moved to Dallas Co., from Indiana in the Fall of 1850, and engaged in the mercantile business. In September 1862, his father went into the army and was killed in the battle of Corinth, July 1863. Mr. N. followed teaching for seven years in Dallas Co. March 17, 1875, he married Ella HOUGHAM, who was born in Guthrie Co., Nov. 5, 1854. Her parents were among the very earliest settlers of that county. Mrs. N. died July 1, 1878; leaving two children - Don O., born Jan. 5, 1876, and Blanche, Sept. 13, 1877. Mr. N. and wife are both members of the M. E. Church; politically he is a Republican and takes an active interest in any movement for the public good.

PHILLIPS, Wm. H.; Farmer; S. 24; P. O. Newton; born in Jefferson Co., Ohio, February 20, 1832; when eight months old his parents moved to Knox Co., taking him with them. Here he lived till 1860, at which time he came to this county, and located where he now lives. He has always been engaged in farming. Married Sarah V. WALTERS July 28, 1859; they have three children - William F., Charles H., and Sadie D. Mr. Phillips and wife are members of the Methodist Church; politically he is an active Republican, and has held several Township offices since coming to this county. Owns a farm of 280 acres, valued at $14,000, upon which he has a new and handsome house just erected at an expense of $2,000; also, has two fine orchards of about 600 trees, and is largely engaged in raising hogs having at present about 150 head. Mr. P. is a representative farmer of the best class as everything about the premises attests.

RAMER, John P.; Farmer and Stock Raiser; S. 2; P. O. Newton; born in Prussia, near Elberfeld, Sept. 7, 1833; came to America in 1853, and worked on Long Island three months, and in Oneida, N. Y., about one year, when he went to Wisconsin and engaged in Farming and lumbering. Went to Stephenson Co., Illinois in 1862, and in 1863 to the Rocky Mountains. Spent three years in Colorado, Utah, Idaho, and Montana; engaged in Mining, sometimes working for others, and part of the time running a gang of men for himself. Returned in 1866, and married Miss Susan M. STEARN Dec. 25, of the same year. She was born in Bingen, Germany, July 8, 1845. They have four children living - Rudolph R., born Nov. 17, 1867; Nettie M., Aug. 10, 1870; John F., born June 18, 1874; Mary S., born May 8, 1876. They came to this county immediately after marriage, and located on their present farm. Mr. R. is Independent in politics; owns 425 acres of land, valued at $30 per acre. Has an orchard of 300 trees, and a fine artificial grove around the house. Usually keeps 100 head of cattle, a like number of hogs.

Metz; born in Licking Co., Ohio, Nov. 20, 1827; lived there until 1857, when he moved to Delaware Co., and in June 1858, came to this county, located on his present farm. Married Amanda CHAMBERS Nov. 23, 1853. She was born in Knox Co., Ohio. They have two children - Burton, born June 8, 1858, and Mary E., Jan. 27, 1862. Mr. SPENCER and wife are members of the M. E. Church, in which he is a steward. Politically, he has always been a Republican, and is now one of the Trustees of the township. He owns 182 acres of land, valued at $35 per acre. Is somewhat engaged in the dairy business, having now eleven cows.

STEPHENS, J.; Blacksmith, Metz.

TABOR, G.; Farmer; Sec. 13; P. O. Colfax.

TENNANT, Thomas; Postmaster and dealer in general merchandise, Metz; began business here in June 1875, and has been more actively interested in securing a station and trading point here than any one in the neighborhood. His house was the first started, and through his efforts a bridge was built across the river south of town, and the location of the station secured to the people of this section. He takes charge of the affairs of the station and attends to the store, and is getting a fine trade. Born in Ontario, Can, June 5, 1844, and has always been in the mercantile business. Came to Iowa in 1870 and engaged with William B. STREET of Oskaloosa as a clerk, and later with A. M. ABRAHAM, until he came here in 1875. Married Lydia M. GERMAN July 23, 1875. She was born in Canada. They have one child - Susie Bell, born July 1, 1877. Mr. T. and wife are members of the M. E. Church; politically, he is a Republican.

THOMPSON, J. A.; Farmer; Sec. 24; P. O. Newton.

TIEDGE, H.; Farmer; Sec. 13; P. O. Newton; born in Holstein, Germany in 1840. Came to America 1866, and settled in Davenport, and in 1875, came to this county. Married Lena KAUTZ in 1872. They have two children - Emma and John. Mr. T. and wife are members of the Lutheran Church. He has always been a farmer, and now owns a farm of 160 acres, valued at $4,000, also has an orchard of about one acre.

TREAGER, Abram; Farmer; Sec. 13; P. O. Newton; was born in Fredericktown, Md. in 1804. He lived there till 13 years of age, when he moved to Virginia and learned the trade of blacksmith. He then went to Harper's Ferry and worked in the United States Arsenal at that place five and one-half years; he helped to manufacture many a rifle for the Government; at the close of his labors at Harper's Ferry, he went to Columbus, Ohio, and worked for the Shawnee Indians two years, when he was transferred to the Wyandot tribe and worked for them twenty-one years, receiving his pay from the Government - about $700 per year and board. After closing his work for the Indians, he lived there till 1854, when he came directly to this county, where he has since resided. He married Miss Catherine HOUCK. They have had five children, three of whom are living - Lavona, Ann and Purd. Mrs. TREAGER is a member of the M. E. Church; he has always been a Democrat. Owns 125 acres of land, valued at $3,000.

WESTBROOK, A. J.; Farmer; Sec. 1; P. O. Newton; born in Knox Co., Ohio, Sept. 30, 1833. He learned the carpenter trade which he followed mostly till he came to this county. He enlisted in Co. E., 121 O. V. I., August 1862 for three years, but was discharged for disability in about five months. He married Livona C. SWETLAND November 24, 1859. They have four children - Artemas F., Charles B., H. Burr and William S. Mr. W. and family came to this county in 1865, and engaged in farming, carrying on his father's place. Politically, he is a Republican. Has been Assessor of the Township four years. His brother L. B. is now Clerk of Courts in this county.

WHEELER, J. R.; Farmer and Stock Dealer; Sec. 23; P. O. Newton; born in Licking Co., Ohio, December 5, 1834. Moved to Indiana when 14 years old, and to McLean Co., Illinois in 1849. Came to this county in the Spring of 1856. Married Miss S. S. TURK July 18, 1858. She was born in Winnebago Co., Illinois in 1842. They have a family of nine children. Mr. W. enlisted in Co. B, 13th I. V. I., October 1961, and served till July 9, 1862, when he was honorably discharged for disability. Bought the house in Newton known as the "Farmer's Home," in 1867, and ran it till 1870, having a good custom. Was also engaged in the saloon business in Newton. Owns 160 acres of land, valued at $35 per care. Raises from sixty to eighty hogs annually. Politically, he is a Greenbacker.

WITMER, H. R.; Farmer; Sec. 15; P. O. Colfax.

WOODRUFF, C.; Farmer; Sec. 6; P. O. Newton.

WOODRUFF, Louis A.; Farmer; Sec. 7; P. O. Newton; born in Licking Co., Ohio, July 28, 1830; lived there twenty-four years, when he came to this county, and settled near where he now lives, being among the first settlers in this part of the county. Married Ester WILLISON April 15, 1852. She was born in the same county. They have two children - Myrtle F. and Victoria M. Mrs. W. is a member of the M. E. Church. He is a Republican politically and helped to organize the township. Came here a poor man, with barely his hands, and a large share of energy; accumulated quite a fortune, but being involved in securities for others, a large share of it was swept away. With pluck and perseverance, he went at it again, and now has a farm of 287 acres, valued at $12,000, and forty-seven acres in Jackson Co., worth $25 per care. Usually keeps from seventy-five to 100 head of hogs; has an orchard of about 300 trees, and a fine artificial grove of maples around the house.
