ADAMSON, Benj.; Farmer; Sec. 12; P. O. Newton; born in Tennessee in 1818; moved to Indiana in 1824; thence to Platt Co., Mo., in 1840; thence to this county in 1846.  Has 173 acres of land, valued at $50 per acre.  Married Sarah A. WILLIAMS in 1841; she was born in Wayne Co., Ind., in1825; they have two children�Nettie A. and Lillie M.  Members of the M. E. Church; Greenbacker.

ASHLEY, Riley; Farmer; Sec. 9; P. O. Newton; born in Knox Co., Ohio, in 1821; came to Jasper County in 1849.  Has eighty acres of land, valued at $75 per acre.  Married Miss Drucella HELFRY in 1840; she was born in Licking Co., Ohio, in Dec. 1823, died in April, 1860, leaving five children�Annias M., William H., John, Annie and Phebe; then married Mrs. Maranda A. WOODRUFF in 1862; she was born in Licking Co., Ohio, in 1833; they have two children�Elsworth and Katie.  Greenbacker.  Has held the office of Sheriff, School Director and Secretary of School Board ten years.  Member of the A., F. & A. M., No. 59, Newton.

ATWOOD, M. W.; Farmer; Sec. 23; P. O. Newton; he was born June 15, 1831, in Litchfield Co., Conn.; in 1845, came to Trumbull Co., Ohio; in 1855, came to Jasper Co., Iowa; in 1857, removed to Kansas; in 1860, came to his present farm.  He owns 120 acres, valued at $40 per acre.  Married Eliza A. DUNN in Feb., 1859; she was born in 1841, in Knox CO., Ohio; have four children�Charles S., Harry E., Grace L. and Grant Wilson.  Mr. A. represented Jasper County in the 12th General Assembly in 1868; prior to this, he was a member of the County Board of Supervisors for three years; is Justice of the Peace; has held this office about eight years.  Members of the M. E. Church; Republican.  Enlisted in 1862, in Co. K, 28th Iowa Inf.; served to the close of the war; participated in the battle of Champion Hills, siege of Vicksburg, Sabine Cross Roads ,La., also at Winchester, Fisher�s Hill, Cedar Creek and others.

BADGAR, I. G.; Farmer; Sec. 23; P. O. Newton.

BADGER, Mary A., Mrs.; Sec. 23; P. O. Newton; she was born in Knox Co., Ohio, in 1848; removed to Jasper Co., Iowa, and settled on their present farm, which they entered from the government, consisting of 730 acres, valued at $36,000.  She was married to Thomas REES March 4, 1845; he was born Sept. 4, 1818, in Pennsylvania, and died March 10, 1865, in Jasper Co., Iowa; they had nine children�Anson E., Spencer H., Henrietta E., Roseland, Frank P., Estella M. and Effa C.; lost Charles, aged 9 years, and Lewis died in infancy.  Second marriage to Isaac BADGER May 1, 1867.

BAIN, John R.; Farmer; Sec. 23; P. O. Reasonor; born in Washington Co., N. Y., in 1828; came to Morrow Co., Ohio, in 1853; thence to this county in 1855; has 142 � acres of land, valued at $40 per acre.  Married Rachel LIVINGSTON in 1854; she was born in Lisbon, Ohio, in 1831; they have three children�Seneca W., Frank L. and Freeman G.  Republican.  Mr. BAIN was the first Township Clerk and Trustee elected in this township; was elected when the whole township was Democratic except himself.  He enlisted in the 40trh Iowa V. I., under Capt. SENNET as musician; participated in the taking of Little Rock; was with Gen. BANKS on the Red River campaign; was mustered out at Davenport, Iowa, in July, 1865.  Followed carpentering and building until 1877, by which he made his property; he is one of the most thorough musicians in this county.

Newton; born in Morrow Co., Ohio, in 1824; came to this county in 1856; has 120 acres of land, valued at $50 per acre.  Married Isabel McDONALD in 1847; she was born in New York in 1825; they have six children�Samuel O., Isaac E., Ida M., Charles W., Fletcher R. and Emma B. Republican.  Has held the office of School Director four years, and Township Trustee two terms.  Mr. and Mrs. B. and three oldest children are members of the U. B. Church.

BLAKELY, Z. W.; Farmer; Sec. 11; P. O. Newton; born in Knox Co., Ohio, in 1830; removed to Muscatine Co., Iowa, in 1854; thence to Cedar Co., 1858, and to Jasper Co., in 1866; has 147 � acres of land, valued at $40 per acre.  He married Miss Elizabeth KUNKLE in 1850; she was born in Knox CO., Ohio, in December, 1831; they have three children�Isabel, Mary and Maggie.  Republican.  Has held the offices of Justice of the Peace, Trustee and School Director.  Mr. and Mrs. BLAKELY are member of the M. E. Church.  He had but $25 on his arrival at Muscatine Co., and now he owns the above number of acres of land, with good, substantial buildings, well fenced and better improved than the average in the township.

CARRIER, A.; Farmer and stock dealer; Sec. 4; P. O. Newton; born in Shenandoah Co., Va., Dec. 25, 1824; removed to Belmont Co., Ohio, in 1846; thence to Jasper Co., in 1857; has 500 acres of land, valued at $50.  Married Miss Sarah J. ANDERSON in March, 1846; she was born in Belmont Co., Ohio, in January, 1828; they have six children�Frank, Milton, William, Emma, Amanda and Carrie.  Greenbacker.  Has been President of Agricultural Society four years.  Mrs. C. is a member of the M. E. Church.  He has been an extensive dealer in stock for eighteen years; has thirty fine bred Short-Horns at the present time; feeds about five cars of cattle per Winter, with 400 hogs per year.

(Transcriber�s note: Almost all other entries in this book give the value of land on a per acre basis, ranging from $20-75 per acre.  It appears that the words �per acre� should have appeared after the $50 value listed for the land, but were accidentally left out in the original book.)

Reasonor; born in Greene Co., Ohio, in 1820; removed to Cass, Ill., in 1856; thence to Marion Co., Iowa, in 1865, and to Jasper Co. in1868; owns his residence and lot.  Married Nancy A. PASCHAL in1840; she was born in Hampshire Co., Va., in 1818; they have eight children�Mary, Samuel, David, Virginia, Sarah L., James, Joseph and Sarah M.  Republican; member of the M. E. Church.  Mr. C.�s son John P., enlisted in the 34th Ill. V. I., in Aug., 1861, and died in St. Louis in Oct., 1861.  Mr. CAVENDER was formerly a farmer, but ill health has compelled him to sell his farm and retire from active life.

Y., in 1816; moved to this county in 1855; has eighty acres of land, valued at $50 per acre.  Married Sarah KIRK in 1848; she was born in Pennsylvania in1825; they have two children�Francis O., born in 1849, and Melvina, born in 1860.  Republican-Greenbacker; Mr. and Mrs. COOK are members of the U. B. Church.  He has held the office of Township Trustee seven terms and Constable three years.  He was in the Steam saw-mill business in Clear Creek Township, and his partner ran away, taking the entire property and leaving him poor.

Y., in 1824; came to Jasper Co. in 1852; has 400 acres of land, valued at $35 per acre.  Married Caroline BALL in 1851; she was born in Cortland Co., N. Y., in 1833; they have seven children�Virgil D., Alice, Charles, Nellie, Fantie, Flora and Carrie.  Greenbacker.

Newton; born in County Antrim, Ireland, in 1836; emigrated to America in 1854, and to Jasper CO. in 1864; has 130 acres of land, valued at $65 per acre.  Married Anna McVEAY in 1855; she was born in County Antrim, Ireland, in 1836; they have five children�Maggie, John, Thomas, Ellen and James.  Greenbacker; Mr. and Mrs. D. are members of the Episcopal Church.  He is a member of the A., F. & A. M. Lodge, No. 59, Newton, Chapter and Commandery.

DAVIS, R. W.; Dealer in general merchandise; Reasonor; born in Indiana in 1834; removed to Muscatine Co., Iowa, in 1834; thence to Jasper Co. in 1855; owns house and lot at Newton and lot in Reasonor, together with an excellent line of dry goods, groceries and general merchandise, and hopes by strict integrity and attention to business to not only retain the patronage of his present customers, but merit that of the entire population of Palo Alto and adjoining townships.  Married Catharine KELER in Sept., 1865; she was born in Luzerne Co., Penn., in 1838.  Mr. and Mrs. DAVIS are members of the U. P. Church; Democratic.  Enlisted in the 22d Iowa V. I. In Aug. , 1862; participated in thirteen regular engagements�Port Gibson, Champion Hills, Vicksburg, Black River Bridge, Jackson, Winchester, Cedar Creek and Fisher�s Hill; was among the number taken prisoner at Cedar Creek; held one month at Libby and three months at Danville; was mustered out in July, 1865, at Savannah, Ga.
