HARRAH, A. L.; Co-0perative store, south side public square. he was born 2 Jan 1843 in
Harrison Co., OH. In 1854 he went to Scott Co., IA, and in 1856 to Newton, Iowa. He first
engaged in farming and owns 160 acres in Malaka Twp. He also owns $3000 in stock in this
store. He enlisted in 1864 in Co. B, 46th I. V. I, served about eight months and was
honorably discharged. He married A. B. DODGE in 1867. She was born in 1847 in Sullivan
Co., NY. They have two children, Mary E., and George D. They are members of the
Universalist Church.
HASKIT, Thomas; Retired. he was born 21 Sep 1807 in Warren Co, OH. He went to Indiana in
1824, and to Jasper County in 1854. He owns 95 acres in Palo Alto Twp, and also property
in this city. He married Sarah PICKERING in 1829. She was born in OH. They have had seven
children, three of whom are now living---W. I., Emily J. (now Mrs. ELLIOT), living in CA.,
and Lydia (now Mrs. STOVER.) His son, Jonas P. enlisted in 1862 in Co. K., 28th I. V. I.,
and was killed at the battle of Champion Hills 16 May 1863. Mr. H. has always been
prominently identified with the Agricultural Society since its organization. He has been
County Superintendent and Township Clerk. He is a Republican.
HIATT, John W.; Carpenter and joiner, shop in the rear of the bank of Newton. He was born
21 Mar 1819, in Taylor Co., VA. In 1829 he went to Shelby Co., OH and in 1844 to Aurora,
IN. In 1852 he removed to Boone Co, KY and to Newton, IA in 1854, where he has since
resided. He owns the bank property occupied by William VAUGHN, also a house and lot in the
city. He married Catherine IKE 24 Feb 1842. She was born 2 Feb 1821 in Shelby Co., OH.
They had one child who died in Indiana. He is a Republican.
HOUGH, John B.; Firm of MILLER & HOUGH, lumber and grain, resides on Mulberry street.
He was born 25 Feb 1823 in Loudoun Co., VA. He came to Newton, IA in 1854. In 1855 was
appointed Deputy of the District Court, was afterward elected Clerk the first time the
Republican ticket was in the field. He held this position two terms. Was in the Provost
Marshall's office during the war, under Capt. James MATTHEWS. In Jan 1866, he returned to
Newton and engaged in the lumber trade. In 1876 they added grain to their business. Has
been a member of the city Council, was President of the School board in 1862 and also
taught for one term. He married Elizabeth HOUGH in 1846. She was born Aug 1822 in Loudoun
Co., VA. They had seven children, six living---Josephine, Evelyn is a graduate of Iowa
College, now teaching school in CA. Ella V., Emerson, now attending the State Univ. at
Iowa City, in his junior year. He was one of three who formed the first graduating class
of the Newton High School; and Edward C. who was one of the three who graduated in the 2nd
graduating class at Newton, IA. He is now employed at the office of Miller and Hough.
Norman Hamlin, now attending the High School, room No. 8. They are members of the
Congregational Church. He is a Republican
HOUSEL, C. J.; Jeweler and watchmaker, corner Main and Spring streets, residence south
half of sub-lot 18, between Spring and Olive streets. He was born 1 Sep 1818, in Milton,
PA, and in 1854 came to Newton, Iowa. He first engaged in daguerrean and jewelry business,
but after a few years sold out the daguerrean business and added dentistry to his jewelry
which he continued till about two years ago. He owns his residence and two and quarter
acres in the city, also his store and other property in the city. He married Elizabeth
MCCALMONT in 1843. She was born 1825 in PA, died in 1861 in Newton, Iowa. They had nine
children, four living---Phebe, Emma, Isabella and William. Thomas H. enlisted in 1861 and
died in the hospital in St. Louis.
HUGHES, E. E.; Firm of Hughes & Son, dentists, office over Clark's Bank. He was b. 16
Oct 1850 in Toronto, Canada. In 1852 he came with his parents to Grand Rapids, and in 1870
came to Davis Co, Iowa. In 1877 he removed to Newton, Iowa. He commenced practice with his
father in 1870. He is recording Secretary and Treasurer of the Iowa State Dental Society,
and held this position the past two years. He has just been elected to a third term. He
married Mary M. MCILVAIN in Dec 1875. She was born in St. Louis

HUNTER, George B.; Postmaster, residence corner Race and South streets. He was born 14
June 1840 in OH. In 1837 he came to Newton, Iowa, arriving here on May 7. He enlisted in
1861, in Co. B, 13th Iowa V. I. He served three years and was honorably discharged. His
first promotion was to Eighth Corporal, then to Fifth Sergeant, then to First Sergeant,
and in 1862 was made 2nd Lieutenant. He received his appointment to his present position
in 1869. He married Susan A. DUNKLEE in May 1867. She was born 4 Feb 1843 in Pittsford,
VT. They had two children; lost Frank T. in Jan 1877, aged 6 years. Their second child,
not named, was born 2 Apr 1878. Mrs. H. is a member of the Presbyterian Church. He is a
Republican.
KELLY, Dennis; Farmer, Sec. 19, owns ninety nine acres valued at $2,500. He was born in
the parish of South Killmurry, West Muskrey, Cork Co., Ireland in 1811. He came to America
in 1848, worked on the Harlem and New Haven R. R. one year then on the New York and Erie
R. R., commencing at Canisteo and working to the lake. he then returned to Cattaraugus,
where he remained fifteen years in the employ of Weston Brothers, lumber dealers, and in
Jul 1867, came to Iowa and soon settled where he now resides. He married Margaret DUNLAY
in N.Y. City 20 Feb 1849. She was born in Mount Catherine, parish of Water Grass Hill,
Cork Co., Ireland. Their children are John (now residing in Waukee, Dallas Co.) Nora, Mary
and Baxter (twins), and Denis. He is a Greenbacker and Catholic.
KENNEDY, L. L. D.; Retired, resides Farmer street. he was born 28 Dec 1825, in Wayne Co.,
KY. When an infant, he came with his parents to Hendricks Co. IN. In 1850 he removed to
Newton, Iowa. He first followed the carpenter and joiner trade till 1860, then commenced
the furniture trade, then resumed the carpenter trade. He owns forty acres of land, also
various property in the city, consisting of the Clifton House, the Brick store occupied by
Ray & Axtell, and several other stores, and his residence. He married Nancy MORGANSON
in 1853. She was born in 1827 in Clark Co, KY. They have three children---Anna, Arthur and
Fred. He has been a member of the Council, and is a Democrat.
LAMB, Caleb; Born in Randolph Co., NC 6 May 1822, and in 1829 went with his father to
Washington Co. IN near the present town of Slem. He then removed in 1831 to his
grandfather's in Highland Co. OH. Soon after this his father died leaving a widow with
limited means and and four children, Caleb being the second. In 1833 his mother returned
to IN and located on a farm in Hendricks Co. The two older boys worked the farm but
attended school during the three winter months whenever opportunity afforded. On the 2nd
day of June 1842, Mr. Lamb was married to Miss Olive Jane KENNEDY and for eight years
lived in Indiana teaching school in Winter and working at the trade of a carpenter. In
October 1850 he came to Newton, Jasper Co., where has since resided. For four years he
kept an hotel. He was appointed Postmaster by President Lincoln in 1861, and in 1862 went
to war as Chaplain of the 37th I.V.I., which position he held until the end of the war. On
his return home, was again commissioned Postmaster and held the office until 1869 when he
was agent for U.S. Express Co, at Newton. He was initiated into Masonry in Newton Lodge,
U.D., afterward No. 59 He held many offices after that. He is a Baptist and in 1854, with
his wife, he helped organize the church in Newton., Captain Lamb has been the father of
three sons, two of whom are living. The eldest resides in Chicago, and the second with the
father. The third and youngest, died in Newton on 25 May 1872, aged 22 years.
LAMB, Richard; Farmer, Sec. 33, owns 240 acres valued at $12,000. He was born in Randolph
Co., N.C. 12 Sept. 1828, and moved with his parents to Highland Co., OH when about 1 1/2
years old. Thence to Hendricks Co., IN in 1832. Here he remained till 1852 when he moved
to this county, settleing in Newton village. He remained three years and returned to
Hendricks Co, and returned to this county and lived in the village till Apr 1865 when he
moved to his present residence. Married Nancy E. THOMPSON in Clinton Co., IA 25 Feb 1855.
She was born in Wayne Co. KY, 3 Sep 1834, and moved with parents to Hendricks Co., IN when
about 1 year old, where she remained until 1854 and moved to Clinton Co IA. They have one
daughter-- Frances J. who was born 16 Apr 1856. She resided with her parents. Mrs. and
Miss Lamb are members of the Baptist Church.
LEDYARD, George R.; County Auditor, res. McDonald Street. He was born 30 Nov 1834, in
Orleans Co. NY in 1854. He went to Columbia Co., WI the same year and removed to IL. In
1855 he came to Marion Co. IA. He enlisted in 1862 in co. G., 33rd I. V. I. and served to
the end of the war. In 1865 he came to Jasper Co IA. In 1869 he was elected County Auditor
and removed to Newton. He married S. A. WHITTAKER 30 Oct 1856. She was born in Muskingum
Co., OH 15 Apr 1836. They had four children, three living-- George W., Ella E., and
William R. Mr. L. has been Justice of the Peace. Mrs. L. is a member of the Congregational
Church.
LISTER, James; Butcher, Main St., residence same. He was born 9 Feb 1830 in Yorkshire,
England. In 1856 he came to Newton, IA. He first engaged with Mushon & Bros. milling
business and in 1857 he commenced his present business. He had followed this business
seven years in Bradford, Eng. He is supposed to be the first butcher in Bradford. He
married Mrs. Ann FASTER, daughter of George INGLE in 1851. She was born 3 Jul 1825 in
Yorkshire, Eng. She had one child by a former marriage-- Dinah (now Mrs. NEEDHAM), has one
son William T.
LISTER, John F.; Boots and shoes, McDonald St.. He was born 24 Nov 1829 in Yorkshire,
England. In 1860 he came to Newton, IA. He enlisted in 1862 as musician in the 4th
Brigade, and detailed to Gen. Dodge's headquarters, Left Wing, 16th Army Corps. He
mustered out the first muster at the close of the war. He married Ann CHIPPENDALE in 1851.
She was born in England and died in 1865. They had five children, two living-- Smith and
Sarah. Second marriage to Lucretia M. CLARK in 1871. She was born in OH, they have two
children: Mary and Lura. He is a Republican.
LITTLE, William T.; Clothing and gents furnishing, goods, northest corner of square. He
was born in Philadelphia 8 Dec 1835, and in Aug 1849 went to Richmond, IN, in 1855 he came
to Jasper Co IA, and in 1865 to Newton. He married Emily, daughter of James GRAY of
Lynnville. They were married in Dec 1860. She was born in Greensboro, IN in 1841. They
have three children-- Ida, Oscar, and William. He has been Township Clerk, and Trustee. He
is a Republican.
LOOMIS, Wm. A.; Farmer, Sec 29, owns 120 acres of land valued at $4,800. He was born in
Portage Co., OH 15 Sept 1830. He moved to Henry Co., OH with his parents when about 10
years of age. He spent three years in Tiffin, OH and in 1860 went to Pike's Peak,
remaining in the mountains for nine years, engaged in mining most of the time. In 1869 he
moved to this County, where he now resides. He married in Bowlder City to Miss Anna PENMAN
in Sept 1867. She was born in Columbia Co., PA in 1838. Their children are Mary, Lizzie
and Catherine. He is a Republican.
LYTLE, D. Y.; Pump manufacturer. He was born 1 Apr 1836 in Washington Co., VA, and in 1851
came to Highland Co., OH. In 1871 he removed to Jasper Co Iowa. He married Sarah J.
OREBAUGH in 1859. She was born in 1840 in Highland Co., OH. They have one son-- John A.,
aged 18 years. He enlisted in 1861, in Co C, 81st Ohio V. I. and served three years and
eight months, He was honorably discharged. He is a Greenbacker.
McCORD, Thomas T.; Dealer in livestock, firm of M. A. McCord & Co. He was born 27 Sep
1833 in Johnson Co., IN. When an infant, he came with parents to Edgar Co. Il, and on 17
Oct 1855 came to Jasper Co., Iowa. He engaged in farming and stock raising. He enlisted in
1862 in Co. K, 28th Iowa V. I. He served in that regiment fourteen months, then was
promoted to Captain in the 93 Colored Infantry, and served till the end of the war. He was
in the battles of Port Gibson, Champion Hills, Vicksburg and others. He married Margaret
HILL March 12 1857. She was born 22 Jun 1834 in Hamilton Co., OH, and died 24 Apr 1864.
They have four children--Mary E. (now Mrs. George FAILOR), Edgar E., Lillie J., and Emma
E. Second marriage to Elizabeth CAMPBELL 14 Dec 1865. She was born 28 Dec 1833 in Orange
Co., IN. They have one child--Hiber C. They are members of the Presbyterian Church. He is
a Republican.
McKINLEY, Robert; Of the firm of McKinley Bros., agricultural implements. He was born 6
Aug 1846 in Crawford Co., PA, went to Wisconsin in 1865, and in 1868 to Jasper Co., Iowa.
They commenced their present business in 1872. He owns two lots and residence in the city.
He is now City Treasurer. He married N. E. WILLIAMSON in 1867. She was born 13 Jul 1847 an
Crawford Co., PA. They have two children--Cora and Robert A.
MANN, W. M.; Firm of Mann & Son, carriage and wagon manufacturing. He was born 6 Sep
1846 in Augusta, OH. He married Lucy BAILEY 24 Nov 1870. She was born 2 Nov 1850 in Fulton
Co., OH. They have one child---William D., born 8 Apr 1874. His grandfather, John J. Mann
was born 1 Jul 1824 in Muskingum Co., OH. In 1850 he came to Jasper Co., Iowa, and in 1856
commenced his present business. He was Clerk of Clear Creek Twp. from 1850 to 1853. He
married Mary MANFULL in 1845. She was born 1826 in Carroll Co., OH. They have five
children William M., W. G., W. C., E. S., and Bertha J. William M., enlisted in 1861, Co
C, 22nd I.V.I. and served three years. He was honorably discharged. He was engaged at Port
Gibson, Jacksonville, and Black River. On 22 May 1862 he lost the middle finger of his
left hand at the charge of Vicksburg. He was also at the battles at Fisher Hill, Cedar
Creek, Winchester, Brownstown and Athens.
MANNING, William R.; Lumber and grain, residence corner of Spring and Cherry streets. He
was born 11 Feb 1841 in Nashville, TN. When an infant he went with parents to New Jersey,
in 1849 to Illinois, and in 1854 to Jasper Co, Iowa. He first engaged in the bakery
business with his father. In 1861 he enlisted in Co I, 10th I. V. I. He served about three
years and was in the battles of Corinth, Iuka and others on the Mississippi under command
of Gen. Grant. In 1864 he retired to Newton, Jasper Co., Iowa and engaged in the boot and
shoe business until 1868, when he commenced his present business. He has been a member of
the Council the past three years. He married Emma D.WOOD 4 Sep 1865. She was born in 1845,
in Cincinnati, OH. He is a Republican.
MARTIN, R. J.; Deputy Sheriff. He was born 14 Dec 1841 in Mercer Co., PA. On 19 Jun 1861
he came to Jasper Co., Iowa. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. I, 31st Iowa V. I. He served about
eighteen months, then returned to Pennsylvania, remained there till the Fall of 1864, when
he returned to Iowa. He attended the State University two terms, then returned to PA. In
1870 he came to Newton, Iowa. He was appointed to his present position in 1874. He married
Lizzie L. FOX 25 Sep 1866. She was born 17 Jul 1845, in Lawrence Co., PA. They had five
children, two living---Kittie, born 1869, and Sadie A., born in 1873. They are members of
the Presbyterian Church and he is a Republican.
MAYFIELD, Mrs. M. A.; She is the daughter of J. PAYTON and wife of N. B. Mayfield,
Lynnville. She was elected in Oct 1877 to Superintendent of Schools of Jasper Co., Iowa.
She was born in Morgan Co., IN. He was born 16 Oct 1844 in Lynn Grove Twp.. He is supposed
to be the first white child born in Jasper Co. They were married 8 Mar 1868, and have two
adopted children--Emma BUTRUM and Billy HUGHES. Mrs. M. came to Jasper with her parents in
1835. They are Members of the Church of Christ.
MILLER, J. M.; Farmer, Sec. 35. He owns 160 acres of land, valued at $10,400. He was born
in Jefferson Co., W.VA on 24 Sep 1830, and moved to Burlington, Iowa in June 1855. He
remained there one year and then removed to Newton Village, where he resided (with the
exception of one year on the "Hammer Farm") till 1865 when he moved to his
present farm on which he raises wheat, corn, rye, oats, hay, etc. He married Mary F. BLAKE
in Newton on 6 May 1861. She is a native of Indiana. Their children are Lydia G., William
H., Robert E., Birdie and Freddie. He is a Democrat.
MONTIS, S. A.; Farmer, Sec. 22, owns forty acres valued at $3000. He was born in Richland
Co., OH on 3 Jan 1847, and came to this county in 1868. he lived in Newton Village one
year, then moved to this township where he has since resided. He married E. M. DREW 2 Jan
1872. She is also a resident of Richland Co., OH. Mr. M. is a Republican.
MOORE, A. L.; Capitalist. He was born 17 Mar 1817 in Chittendon Co., VT. In 1845 he went
to Freeport, Illinois. In 1856 he came to Newton, Iowa, and first engaged in brick making.
In 1857 he commenced the brokerage and loan business. He married Lavenia C. MORSE, 1 Mar
1854. She was born 30 Apr 1832 in Underhill, VT. They have three children---Mary M., Lois
A., and Marcia B. Mrs. M. is a member of the Congregational Church. He is a Republican.
NEAL, Charles F.; (the Wild Irishman) He was born in Madison Co., OH on 7 Jun 1856, and
named for Gen. Fremont, then a candidate for the Presidency. While he was a small boy his
father thought to better his condition by coming to the Far West, which he did. He settled
in Benton Co., in this state, where he resided until the breaking-out of the war, when he
enlisted, and the family returned to Ohio, where the subject resided and went to school
until 11 years of age, when he left the "paternal mansion." Going to Carlyle,
IL, he apprenticed himself for three years service to learn the printing trade. After this
he read law in his father's office and then traveled as a journeyman printer for four
years, always carrying a "card" with him, and being one of the youngest men ever
admitted to the Typographical Union in America. He also ran on the river two seasons and
traveled several months with a circus and menagerie through the Eastern States. He came to
Iowa in 1871, and engaged in the newspaper business, although he had been in the business
previous to this in Pennsylvania. The People's Friend, was the first Anti-Monopoly paper
stated in Iowa, and Mr. Neal, then the youngest editor in the State, controlled it.
Afterward, he started the Plow and Anvil at Marshalltown, in the interest of the National
Greenback Party, and was for two years after, city editor of the Daily Times of that
place, which position he resigned in order to do more for the political party he had
identified himself with. He came to Jasper co., and started the Iowa National, 1 Feb 1878.
The paper is edited with care and is a picture of typographical neatness. It is a
twenty-eight-column paper and is published every Friday morning at the low rate of $1 per
year, thus giving it a large and growing circulation in the town and adjoining counties.
Mr. Neal was for several years the youngest editor in Iowa, and commenced the publication
business at age 14.
O'NEALL, J. B.; Dry goods, boots, shoes and clothing, east side square. He was born 22 Jul
1829 in Salem, Indiana. He went to Dubuque, IA in 1851, to Monroe, Wisc. in 1854, and in
1857 came to Newton, Iowa. He has been engaged as a civil engineer, and Government
Surveyor until coming to Newton. He commenced his present business in 1865. He married
Eliza HELM in May 1858. She was born in 1837 in Indiana. They have two children---Carol
and Cora. He is a Republican
PEER, Thomas; Retired. He was born in Oct 1812 in Pickaway Co., OH. On 16 Aug 1852 he came
to Jasper Co., Iowa, Lynn Grove. In 1869 he came to Newton, Iowa and owns his residence
and 3 1/4 acres in the city. When in Rock Creek, he was Justice of the Peace about six
years. He was Supervisor one term, also School Treasurer and Director. His son, William
I., enlisted in 1862 in Co B, 13th I. V. I, and served until the end of the war. He
married Sophia IKE in May 1832. She was born in 1813 in Pennsylvania. They had ten
children, six living---Sarah A., Harriet E., John W., William I., J.C. and Lafayette E. He
is a Republican.
PFEIFFER, Godfrey; Gristmill. He was born 14 May 1837 in Bavaria, Germany. In 1846 he came
to New York City and remained there about seven months, then removed to Butler, Co., OH.
In 1860 he came to Keokuk Co., Iowa and in 1874 to Jasper County. In 1877 he commenced his
present business. He married Sarah FAIR 15 Oct 1861. She was born in 1839 in Carroll Co.,
Maryland. They have five children---Laura B., Louisa J., Emma M., Rebecca K., and Estella.
PIPER, D. D.; Retired. He was born 10 June 1810 in Herkimer Co., New York. In 1837 he went
to Lenawee Co., Mich., first engaged in the drug business, which he continued about two
years, then engaged in the foundry and plow business till 1865 when he removed to Newton,
Iowa. He was a member of the Legislature in Michigan from 1861 to 1865. He is one of the
stockholders of the Bank of Newton. He was elected Mayor in 1867 and re-elected in 1875.
He married Anna FABRICK in 1829. She was born 1810 in Herkimer Co., NY. They had seven
children, two living---Albert and Cornelia. Oscar enlisted in 1861, 5th I. V. I., served
two years and was killed at the battle of Iuka in Sept. 1863. They lost Mary in 1877, aged
27 years; and Charlotte died in 1877 aged 34 years.
