BADGER, John J.; Farmer; Sec. 26; P. O. Prairie City; born Dec. 5, 1805; came to this county in 1868; has 160 acres of land, valued at $6,000; belongs to the M. E. Church. Married Emily GILSON. She was born in New York in 1813, and died Dec. 17, 1877. She was mother of twelve children, eight of whom are living - Mary, Delia, Almira, Lentoin, Emily, Adda, Jeremiah, Alfred, Adelbert. Emigrated from Pennsylvania to Galesburg, Knox Co., Ill.; lived there seven years; thence to Jasper Co. The home Mr. B. used to own now stands the city of Vanguida, Warren Co., Penn.; oil was struck on the same place a short time after leaving; probably there are a hundred wells on the place; could sold one year later for $1,000 per acre.

BURNS, Jerome S.; Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 31; P. O. Prairie City; born in St. Charles CO., Mo., Oct. 7, 1831. Came to this county in 1865; has 200 acres of land, valued at $10,000. Married Mary KUHNS. She was born in Mercer Co., Penn., May 13, 1836. They have thirteen children, ten of whom are living - Carter, born April 5, 1858; Sylvester, Dec. 19, 1859; Elizabeth, Dec. 9, 1863; Christina, Dec. 15, 1867; Annie, April 14, 1871; Luary, Nov. 26, 1872; George, May 3, 1874; Della, Dec. 14, 1875; Fred, April 24, 1878. Emigrated from Missouri with his parents to Jackson Co., Iowa, in 1846, where he lived nineteen years; thence to Jasper Co. where he has resided since; settled twenty-two miles from Dubuque, and there were not more than a half dozen houses on the road. Prairie City was very small when he first came here, only one store; came here early, and has a good home with comfortable surroundings.

CLYMER, John; Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 28; P. O. Prairie City; born in Greene Co., Penn., May 30, 1826; came to this county in 1866. Has 240 acres of land, valued at $8,500. Married his first wife, Mary CHURCHELL. She was born in New York. They had three children, two living - Sarah E. and George S. For his second wife, married Catherine STOUFFER. She was born in Ohio, Feb. 25, 1836. They have one child - John F. Came from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin; lived there some time; thence to the northern part of Iowa; from there went to Freeborn Co., Minn.; traveled around considerable; was in Kansas and in 1866 came to Jasper Co., where he has resided since. Raised about eighty acres of corn (4,000 bushels), 400 bushels of oats, generally feeds a car load of cattle and turns off about seventy-five head of hogs yearly.

COOMES, Isaiah; Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 19; P. O. Prairie City; was born in Licking Co., Ohio, Jan. 12, 1821; came to this county in 1854. Has 180 acres of land, valued at $7,200. Politics, Republican. Held the office of Justice of the Peace eight years; also Assessor and Township Clerk. Married Mary Ann SLAUGHTER. She was born in Perry Co., Ohio, May 5, 1822. They have four children - Oliver, Sarah, Townsend and Jemima. Came direct from Ohio to Jasper County, where he has resided since. At the time he came here Washington and Mound Prairie were in one township, and the first election was held in Sand Ridge School House. Came here amongst the earliest settlers. Has a good and comfortable home, and is one of the substantial farmers.

DANIEL, R. W.; Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 21; was born in Rockbridge Co., Va., May 26, 1843. Came to this county in 1870. Has eighty acres of land, valued at $2,400. Married Margaret A. HEMPHILL. She was born in Missouri, Sept. 25, 1839; mother of four children - Ella V., John W., Charles H. and Lillie G.; the boys died in infancy. His parents came from Virginia when he was 2 years old to Pike Co., Missouri; lived there twenty years thence to Warren Co., Ill.; lived there five years; thence to Jasper Co., Iowa. Enlisted in the Co. C, 3rd Mo. V. C. in 1861; was in the battles of Kirksville, Pilot Knob; was in all the skirmishes of the regiment; was taken prisoner at Centreville, Mo., Dec. 22, 1864; was recaptured on the 25th; mustered out at Macon City, Mo.; was in the service three and one-half years; was Sixth Sergeant, and acted as Q. M. of the company. Raises about 2,000 bushels of corn, 300 of wheat, 500 of oats; turns off twenty-five head of hogs.

FRENCH, J. C.; Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 33; P. O. Prairie City; was born in Orange Co., Indiana, Aug. 6, 1824. Came to this county in 1839. Has 240 acres of land, valued at $12,000. Belongs to the M. E. Church. Married for his first wife, Susannah BUNER. She was born in the same county, June 10, 1828, died January 9, 1859. They have five children living - Saro, Mary A., Edward C., Reuben H., John S. For his second wife, married Susan PECKENPAUGH, born Schuyler Co., Ill., April 17, 1836; mother of six children living - Emma, Nancy, Julia, Bell, Olive, Susannah. Emigrated from Indiana to Knox Co., Ill in the Fall of 1852; lived there 17 years, thence to Jasper Co., Iowa. When they came to Galesburg there were only two stores and about 1,000 inhabitants; there was only one house between Galesburg and Keithsburg, thirty miles. In the Fall or Winter of 1853, saw the first train that ran over the C., B. & Q. R. R. Used the first corn planter used in the United States, manufactured by G. W. Brown of Galesburg, Ill. Was amongst the earliest settlers of Knox Co., Ill. When he came to this county, located on the farm where he now resides. There was not a tree or shrub on the place. Now has a grove from twenty-five feet to forty feet high planted by his own hand and grown in the last nine years. Has an orchard of 150 trees of the best varieties. Has two and a half miles of the best hedge fence in the county; brought his seed from Illinois, sowed and set his own hedge. Mr. F. married cousins - names Susan and Susannah; their mothers are both living, one 85 years old and one 83. Mr. F. has one of the best farms in Mound Prairie Township, and is one of the sound farmers of the county.

GRAHAM, John; Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 20; P. O. Prairie City; born in Centre Co., Penn., Nov. 18, 1833; came to this county in 1864. Has 240 acres of land, valued at $12,000. Politics, Democrat. Holds the office of Township Trustee. Member of the Congregational Church. He married Matilda A. LUCAS. She was born in Centre Co., Penn., Nov. 6, 1841. They have four children - Arthur, born Sept. 17, 1865; George, Jan. 18, 1867; David, Nov. 4, 1869; Johnny, June 17, 1875. Emigrated from Pennsylvania to Missouri, stopped; thence the Mississippi River to Keokuk; bought a team and wagon, and came through to Jasper Co., where he has resided since. Brought some money with him; paid $2,500 for 170 acres of land, on which there were forty acres broken. Mr. G. has a fine farm and home, and is one of the sound farmers of the township.

GROSS, G. G.; Farmer and Live Stock Dealer; Sec. 35; P. O. Prairie City; born in Fannin Co., Ga., Dec. 14, 1844. Came to this county in 1872 in August. Has 320 acres of land, valued at $12,800. Belongs to the M. E. Church. Married Mary E. STALLCOP. She was born in Johnson CO., Ind., April 14, 1829. Has two children - Francis M. and Willie. Mrs. G. was married to a man of the name PELL, by whom she had five children living - Pleasant, Richard S., Robert W., James H., Howard S. Mr. G. left Georgia in 1862; came to Lake Co., Ind.; lived there about ten years; thence to Jasper Co. Mr. G. has some pure-blooded Short-horn cattle; can give pedigree, and as fine as there is in the State. Any one in want of some good cattle would do well to call and examine his her; also some pure blooded Poland-China pigs. Has taken first premium on Short-horns for several years until last year; year before last took sweepstakes. Raises on an average 120 acres corn, or 6,000 bushels; wheat, 300 bushels; oats, 1,500; turns off 240 head of hogs yearly. Mr. G.'s parents were among the earliest settlers in Des Moines Township. They came in the year 1855.

LAUGHLIN, J. L.; Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 29; P. O. Prairie City; was born in Trumbull Co., Ohio, May 4, 1831. Came to this county in 1859. Has 160 acres of land, valued at $8,000. Held the offices of Town Supervisor, Assessor, Town Clerk. Belongs to the Christian Church. Married Selena McLAUGHLIN. She was born in Mercer Co., Penn, Jan. 7, 1833. Emigrated from Ohio to Scott Co., Iowa in 1854; lived there one year; thence to Clinton County; lived there about four years; thence to Jasper Co., Iowa, where he has resided since. Came through with teams; camped out; did their own cooking; worked with first Fall for J. W. MACY. He worked and put in one horse for a dollar a day; his wife picked up potatoes in the field, and that is the way they started out in a new country. The next Spring they built a shanty 16X20 feet. In 1860, went to breaking prairie and raised a crop. Enlisted in the 10th I. V. I. in 1861, under Capt. GARRETT of Newton; was in the battles of Corinth, Iuka, Jackson, Champion Hills, siege of Vicksburg; was elected as First Lieutenant; the First Lieutenant resigned, but his resignation was not accepted; was afterward elected as Second Lieutenant and was commissioned by Gov. KIRKWOOD. Has a good dairy of eighteen cows. Has an orchard of eighteen acres, fine grove and plenty of small fruit; came here a poor man - had an old team and wagon, 85 cents in his pocket and eighty acres of raw prairie; but by muscle and good management, has made himself one of the pleasantest homes of the township. The shanty they built the next year or Summer, the cracks were large enough to allow the stove pipe to pass through them.
