SHAFFER, Jeremiah; Farmer; Sec. 24; P. O. Lynnville; owns 168 acres of land, valued at $5,800; born in Harrison Co., Ohio, in 1819; moved to Van Buren Co., Iowa, in 1845; moved to where he now lives in 1864.  Married Elizabeth BARTOW in 1840; she is a native of Ohio; their children are Mary, Nancy, William M., Catharine, John W. and Abraham L.

SHERMAN, Thomas; Farmer; Sec. 17; P. O. Lynnville; Owns 785 acres of land, valued at $23,000; born in Brimfield, Hampden Co., Mass., Sept. 6, 1828; moved to Brimfield, Portage Co., Ohio, with his parents in 1831; there he remained till Oct. 1854, and came to this county, settling where he now lives; at that time his farm was an open prairie; it is now well planted with groves of shade trees, three good orchards and has on his land five dwelling houses and numerous outbuildings, stables, etc.  Married Peninah SPARKS April 10, 1856; she was born in Morgan Co., Ill., Dec. 3, 1835, and came to this county with her parents in 1845; their children are Sarah E., Nancy J., John H., Lewis H., William A. (deceased), Edwin S., Frederick M. and Franklin O.  Is politically a Republican, and the family are members of the Methodist Church.

SPAIN, George W.; Physician and surgeon; Lynnville; born in Champaign CO., Ohio, Jun 17, 1836; attended school in Marysville, Marion Co., Ohio, and came to Iowa with parents in 1854; they settled near Peoria, Mahaska Co.; here he engaged in farming for a number of years, but eventually started a drug store in Hartford, Warren Co., Iowa, which he continued for eight months; he then studied medicine three years with Dr. WOODWORTH, of Peoria, and attended lectures at Keokuk Iowa State University of which he was a graduate in the Spring of 1865; he then practiced a short time in Granville, Mahaska Co., but in 1866, he moved to this town, where he has since resided.  Married Amanda A. COX in this town in 1869; she is a native of Indiana; their children are Anna F. and George E.

SPARKS, J. J.; Farmer; Sec. 15; P. O. Lynnville; owns 170 acres of land, valued at $6,000; was born in Morgan Co., Ill., in March, 1839; came to Lee Co., Iowa, with his parents when but an infant, and remained until 1848, and moved to this county, settling near where he now lives.  Enlisted in Co. E, 4th I. V. C., July 5, 1861; was at the battles of Guntown and Vicksburg, and many severe skirmishes; was honorably discharged in Jan., 1865, and returned to this county.  Married Sally RAYBORN Feb. 22, 1866; she was born in Highland Co., Ohio; they have two children�Fred and Harry.  He is raising on his farm corn, wheat, oats, etc.; has an fine orchard of 180 trees, besides a number of bearing peach trees.

SPARKS, J. R.; Farmer; Sec. 10; P. O. Lynnville; owns 375 acres of land, valued at $30 per acre; born in Adair Co., Ky., March 16, 1806; moved to Morgan Co., Ill., in 1826, and to this State in 1836, settling in Lee Co., where he remained until 1845, when, in the month of March, he moved to this county, entering the land, and settling where he now lives; at that time, there were but two settlers in what is now Lynn Grove Tp.; Mr. SPARKS, as one of the pioneers of this county, has always been foremost to aid in its progress and development; he built the first log cabin in Lynnville, and also the grist-mill now standing at that place; farmers have come 100 miles to get their grain converted into flour at his mill; the first post office in that part of the county was kept by him; the first preaching in the neighborhood was held in his house; the first school was taught in his kitchen.  Married Elizabeth MATTHEWS in Morgan Co., Ill., Oct. 6, 1828; she was born in Green Co., Ky., Jan. 7, 1806; they have five living children, and six deceased�Jeremiah S., Margaret W. (who was the wife of Jesse HAMMER, and died in 1860, aged 30 years), Matthew T. was a member of Co. K, 5th I. V. I., and died in Andersonville prison about July 9, 1864, aged 30 years; Peninah (now Mrs. SHERMAN); Wm. H. was a member of Co. B., 5th I. V. I., and died at Andersonville prison about Sept. 1, 1864, aged 24 years; John B., residing with his parents; Elizabeth S. (now Mrs. NOBLE), and Samuel T.; also a grand child resides with them, whom they have raised from infancy, named Emma HAMMER.

SPARKS, J. S.; Farmer; Sec. 9; P. O. Lynnville; owns 320 acres of prairie and forty-five acres of timber land, valued at $11,000; born in Morgan Co., Ill., August 8, 1829; moved to Lee Co., Iowa, with parents in 1836, and to this county in 1845.  Married Nancy M. SIMS, in this township, Oct. 2, 1851; she was born in Logan Co., Ky., Sept. 30, 1828; moved to Logan Co., Ill. With parents when 1 year old, and to this county in 1849; they have six children living and one deceased�Mary E. (now Mrs. ROTEN), resides in Kansas; Martha P., born Feb. 28, 1854, resides at home; David J., born April 1, 1857, resides in Kansas; Albert L., born Oct. 7, 1859; John H., born Dec. 19, 1862; Benjamin M., born April 3, 1865, died Jan. 18, 1966, and Nellie L., born April 24, 1867; the last three living are at home.  Is a Republican and Protestant Methodist.

SPARKS, Stephen J.; Farmer; Sec. 15; P. O. Lynnville; owns 200 acres of land, valued at $8,000; born on Indian Creek, Morgan Co., Ill., Aug. 28, 1834; moved to Columbus, Iowa on the Des Moines River in 1837, near the settlement of Black Hawk and his tribe, where he remained, with the exception of a short time in Illinois, till 1848.  Was an active participant in the Mormon war at Nauvoo; lived within a mile of the dwelling of Miller and Liza at the time of their murder, the sad details of which are yet fresh in our minds; in 1848, he moved to this county, settling with his father where he now lives.  Married Marta A. LOTON in 1859, who died in 1851, aged 22 years; has one child living by that marriage, named Amanda, and one deceased�Martha A., who died when 2 years old.  Shortly after the breaking-out of the war, he determined to enlist in the service of his country, and accordingly repaired to Newton, and enlisted under Capt. Felix COZAD, in the capacity of drummer; served three months, then resigned and accepted the position of private in Co. D, 40thIowa V. I., Aug. 28, 1862; was honorably discharged July, 1863, at Paducah, Ky., and returned to this county.  In 1864, he married Mrs. Rebecca WOLF; she is a native of Boone CO., Ind.; his children by this marriage are Sarah, William P., Perry M., Laura M. and Clara B.  Mrs. S.�s children by a former marriage with George WOLF, are Eliza, living, and Cally, deceased.  Politically, is for the best interests of his country and people, regardless of party, and is a member of the Christian Church.

STALLINGS, Wesley; Farmer; Sec. 14; P. O. Lynnville; born in Claiborne Co., Tenn., May 11, 1812.  Married Elizabeth MAYS in the Summer of 1830, and a few weeks after moved with his parents to Sangamon CO., Ill.; April 8, 1844, he left Sangamon Co. for Iowa with an ox team, and about May 10, arrived at this place; then there was not a settler in this part of the country; he broke some prairie, planted corn, turnips, potatoes and cabbage, and then went back to Illinois for his family and returned with them about the last of September; he is the oldest living settler in this county north of the Skunk River.  Mrs. STALLINGS, who came to this county at such an early day, has been dead many years; his children are Martha A. (now Mrs. HILSEBECK, residing in Crawford Co., Iowa), Nancy J. (died in Illinois, aged 11 years), William M., residing in this township; Lucinda ( now Mrs. McNULTY, residing in this township), Elizabeth (died in Illinois, aged 4 years), John P.; Angeline (now Mrs. TAYLOR, residing in this township) and Wesley.  Mr. S. married again to Mrs. Lucetta LANCASTER in the Fall of 1867; her children by a former marriage are Eliza J., Sarah A., Benjamin F. and Rhoda E.; J. P. and Wesley STALLING, jr. reside on the home place; the former was born in this township Oct. 1, 1845.  Married Sarah A. LANCASTER Nov. 16, 1851.  The latter, Wesley, was born in this township Jan. 4, 1854.

SYLVESTER, W. H.; Farmer; Sec. 10; P. O. Lynnville; owns 120 acres, valued at $5,000; born in Hamilton Co., Ohio, in 1836; moved to Fulton Co., Ohio, with parents, in 1844,and remained one year; then moved to Logan Co., Ill., where they lived till 1852, when they moved to this county, settling on Sec. 15.  In September, 1864, Mr. S. enlisted in the 11th I. V. I., Co. A; was engaged in a number of battles and skirmishes, and was discharged at Washington in June, 1865.  He at once returned to his home, where he has since resided.  Married Miss Elizabeth MAYFIELD in this township May 16, 1861; she was born in Sangamon Co., Ill.; they have two children�Charles F. and John.  Politically, is a member of the National party.

WHITE, Borden C.; Proprietor livery, board and sale stable; Lynnville; born in Guilford Co., N. C., Sept. 21, 1832;came to this county in 1855, settling in Lynnville, where he has since resided; has been variously engaged as carpenter and joiner, miler and farmer, till about two years ago, when he engaged in his present business; he has on hand good rigs, with attentive hostlers and drivers, ready to accommodate the traveling public.  Mr. W. married Anna M. ARNOLD in this town in 1856; she is a native of Tippecanoe Co., Ind.; their children are Mary M., Jesse A., Celia M., Rebecca J. and Anna A.  He is a member of the Society of Friends.
