He practiced law in Lynchburgh, Va., until 1868; he located in this county in 1870. He married Miss Annie M. DAVIS, daughter of Levi DAVIS of Tiffin, Ohio, in 1866; she was born in Tiffin, Ohio, in 1843. They attend the Methodist Church; he is a Democrat in politics. He is engaged in stock raising, principally Short-Horned cattle, and Berkshire and Poland hogs, of which he has about $2,500 worth on his farm, which is located on parts of Sec. 14 and Sec. 15 in Buena Vista Township in this county. Enlisted in the 28th I. V. I. in 1862; mustered out in August, 1865; was
in thirteen engagements with his regiment, including Champion Hills, Vicksburg,
Winchester, Cedar Creek and Fisher's Hill.
His company are manufacturing, as a specialty, their deep well iron
cylinder pumps on an extensive scale, and have supplied a large scope of country
with these pumps during the last seven years. He is a lineal descendant in a
direct line from Nicholas Saum, who emigrated to this country from Germany, and
located in the Shenandoah Valley, Va., several years prior to the Revolutionary
War, in which one of his sons was killed. During
the late war, there were six of this family on each side, one of whom was killed
