21, 1839. Married Sydney HALL in
Iowa in 1868; she was born in Pennsylvania July 24, 1843; they have six children
� Laura, Ross, Benjamin, Cora, Ruthe and Junieta.
Has 160 acres of land, valued at $25 per acre.
He enlisted in August, 1861, in 2d Iowa V.C.; was wounded twice; was in
the battles of Farmington, Iuka, Corinth, Island No. 10, New Madrid, the taking
of Corinth, and several small battles, and was under the command of Gen. A. J.
Smith, Gen. Rosecrans, Gen. Grant, Gen. Pope and Gen. Hatch; served three years
and was in all the principal engagements of the campaign; was discharged at the
expiration of his term of service. He
moved to Tama Co., Iowa, in 1857, improved a farm, and thence to Marshall Co.,
and thence to Jasper in 1871. Has
held the offices of School Director, Road Supervisor, etc.
They are members of the M. E. Church.
His brother, J. C. McNEIL, was born in Pennsylvania April 21, 1844, and
married Anna J. CROLL in Iowa in 1866; she was born in New York in 1850; had
three children � Daisy Ann; two died in infancy. He came to Iowa in 1858.
He enlisted in the same regiment with William, served in the same
engagements, and re-enlisted in 1864, and served till the close of the war; he
was in all the late battles after his re-enlistment, of his campaign.
His wife died in 1874; he moved to Calhoun Co. in 1866, and returned to

Jasper Co., Ill., in 1876; he followed lumbering in Pennsylvania and farming in
Illinois; has 160 acres of good land, valued at $28 per acre; he has two acres

He moved to Iowa in 1845. He
enlisted in August, 1862, Co. K, 23d I. V. I.; was in the battles of Mobile,
Redford, Vicksburg, Old Town, Fort Gibson, Champion Hills, Black River, Landing
near Vicksburg, and the Red River Expedition, Fort Eperansia, and several small
battles and skirmishes; was discharged with his regiment at the close of the
war; spent two years traveling, etc. Located
on the present farm in 1868; set out an orchard, has a nice grove, good
buildings, and ninety head of fat hogs, and all the appearances of prosperity

buildings, and all good improvements; 100 acres of wheat, and abundant groves,
etc. He enlisted in Aug., 1861, in
the 10th I. V. I.; was in the battles of Island No. 10, New Madrid, Corinth,
Farmington, siege and battle of Corinth, Iuka, Vicksburg, Yazoo Pass, Jackson,
Miss., Reynolds, Miss., Champion Hills, Chattanooga, Mission Ridge and Decatur,
Alabama, and several small battles; was promoted to Sergeant; guarded the
Atlanta & Chattanooga Railroad for some time, and was discharged at the
close of the war with his regiment. He
has held the offices of Justice of the Peace and School Director.
Has given liberally to schools and churches.
He came to Iowa in 1856, in limited circumstances; has farmed very
extensively, and been very successful; he now has one of the best farms in

David G. TIPTON) Mr. SCOTT is a
practical sheep grower, and has a good flock; has 250 acres of land, valued at
$35 per acre; moved to Iowa in 1867. Has
held offices of Trustee and Treasurer several terms.
Mr. SCOTT helped in the raid to capture the rebel guerrilla Morgan, in
Ohio; furnished horse in the raid for weeks; paid $350 toward enlistments in his
company in the late war. Mr. and

valued at $30 per acre; has the largest bearing orchard in this section of the
country; he has good buildings, a pleasant location, some good timber, good
shades, etc., with all the comforts of life; he moved to Wheeling, W. Va., and
thence to Indiana; followed the carpentering and building in Indiana, and in
Iowa he followed dealing in and shipping livestock to Chicago eight years; he
came to Iowa in 1854, to Independence. Has
held the offices of Township Supervisor and Township Director.

Has 150 acres of land, mostly improved, valued at $30 per acre; has 500
apple trees, and other small fruits. Has
held the office of Secretary of the School Board several years.
Mr. VANDIKE followed school teaching eighteen terms; run a ditcher
several years, and run a threshing machine twelve seasons.
They are members of the M. E. Church, and he is a member of the A., F.
and A. M. Lodge. Mr. VANDIKE moved
into Iowa in August, 1856; he came here in limited circumstances, and has given
his attention to the advancement of education; is a man with unbounded
generosity, has the respect of all that know him, a great reader, a very

Mr. WEBB enlisted in Co. E, 14th I. V. I., October, 1862; was under Gen.
Sherman; was at the battles of Fort Henry, Fort Donelson, Pittsburg Landing, was
wounded in the head and taken prisoner; was taken to several of the principal
prisons in the different Southern States, was held three months and let out on
parole of honor, and soon exchanged and returned to his regiment; was in the
raid after Gen. Price in Missouri and Meridian expedition.
He re-enlisted, was in the battle of Pleasant Hill, and in the ten-days
skirmishing while the Alexandria dam was building, and several small
engagements, and discharged at the close of the war in 1865.
He moved to Iowa in 1858, and has since dealt in live stock, and
butchered, and improved his farm. Mr.
and Mrs. WEBB are members of M. E. Church, and he is a member of the A., F.
