BAILEY, WM., Dr.; Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 34; P. O. Newton; was born in Lincolnshire Co., Eng., March 14, 1819; came to New York in 1830; remained five years, carrying on farming; thence to Ohio in 1835; he then took up the study of medicine and surgery in Greentown, Stark Co., and graduated at the University of Lake Erie, now the Starling Medical College, at Columbus, Ohio, in 1846; he practiced his profession in Ohio twenty years; he then moved to Newton, Iowa; practiced one year, and went into the mercantile business, keeping a general store eighteen months, and thence to Boonesboro, and manufactured brick one season, and returned to Newton in 1864; he then went into the saw-milling business; continued it two years and changed to the lumber business, keeping a lumber yard two years; he then put up several buildings, stores and dwelling houses; was one year at building; he then went to Arkansas, and engaged in the cattle trade, and brought back to Iowa a drove of cattle which he butchered and sold; he then went to California; in 1870, he took a general visit in all the entire country, and returned in a year and bought his present farm of 200 acres, valued at $6,000; he now carries on farming and stock raising extensively, and keeps a large number of milch cows and makes cheese; Mr. Bailey has a large number of stock and hogs; his farm is all improved � a bearing orchard, good building, grove, etc.  He married Mrs. Ellen MOONER in Iowa, in 1863.  She was born in Tioga Co., N.Y., in 1835; she had two children by her first husband � George and Ida, and Mr. Bailey has one child by his first wife � Lucy Victory (she is married to Mortimer MANN, of Newton); they had since their marriage five children; four are living � Ellen Ann, Mary Sophia, William and Margret.  He is a member of the A., F. and A. M. Lodge at Newton.  Has held the office of President of the School Board four years.  Mrs. Bailey is a member of the Catholic Church.

Baxter; born in Muskingum Co., Ohio, in 1816.  Married Lydia Sill in Ohio in 1843; she was born in Ohio in 1823; they had six children � Jessie, Samuel, George, Benjamin, Phillip and John.  Mr. Cross has a good farm of 200 acres in Sherman Tp., valued at $30 per acre.  They are members of the M. E. Church.

DAVEY, James; Farmer and Justice of the Peace; Sec. 9; P. O. Baxter; born in England March 14, 1845.  He married Emma J. Wallace in Illinois in 1864; she was born in Vermont in 1847; they have six children � Cornelius, George Henry, Charles William, Minnie, Gertrude and Elizabeth.  Has eighty-five acres, valued at $1,600.  He enlisted May 17, 1864, in the 132d Ill. V. I. For 100 days; served his time and was mustered out with the regiment.  He hods the office of Justice of the Peace, and has for four years; has been School Director.  He came to New York in 1854; thence to Illinois and thence to Iowa in 1867; improved his farm and set out an orchard, etc.; is one of the hard-working and well respected citizens of Independence Tp.  Greenbacker.

DAWSON, R. B.; Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 20; P. O. Baxter; born in Hart Co., Ky., Sept. 16, 1814.  Married Sophia Jane REYNOLDS in Kentucky March 16, 1837; she was born in Kentucky in 1815; they had eleven children, five of whom are living � Nancy (now Mrs. William COLYAR), Mary Francis (now Mrs. Robert FUQUA), Robert N., Malinda (now Mrs. Robert RIDOUT), Eliza (now Mrs. Andrew LOGSDON).  Mr. D. has 197 � acres of land, valued at $25 per acre, all under modern improvements except forty acres.  Robert enlisted, and served three years, and was mustered out at the close of the war.  Jeremiah enlisted, and was taken sick and died in the service.  Mr. D. has held the office of Justice of the Peace ten years; was County Supervisor, Assessor, School Director, and other Township offices.  Mr. D. gave tow and a half acres of land to build a church; he and one neighbor built the first school house in Independence Tp.; he came to Iowa in 1847; there were but two settlers in the Township; he is now the oldest settler living in Independence Tp.  He formerly followed teaming in Kentucky; he has been a very active man, giving support to schools and churches, etc.; he has labored hard and improved his farm; his life has been such that he has the respect of all that know him; he now enjoys the blessings of a good home, with all the comfortable surroundings.
