KING, A. B.; Dealer in books, stationery, paper hangings, toys, fancy goods, etc.; Monroe. Mr. KING was born in Edgar Co., Ill. on the 6th of May 1846, where he remained until 1855, when he moved with he parents to this county. He engaged in his present business in 1872. Mr. KING is most undoubtedly a most energetic business man; he is a good financier, and has succeeded with a small capital to start out with in building up a splendid trade; he justly merits patronage of the citizens of Monroe and visinity. Politically, he is Republican, having acted with that party since he attained his majority. His father, John KING, was a native of Tennessee. He married Miss Elizabeth KING; they moved to Indiana, thence to Illinois, and from Illinois to this county in 1855, settling on College Farm, four miles north of Newton, where they remained until 1870, when they moved to Newton. Their children were John, who enlisted in the 21st I. V. I. and served until peace was restored; he was in several battles and wounded at Stone River; he married Julia McCORD of this county; James A., who at the breaking-out of the war of the rebellion, enlisted in Co. B, 5th I. V. I.; was promoted Captain, and served until the close of the war, and was honorably discharged; he then went to Greenville, Miss., remaining until the Spring of 1866; when he was about to return to his home in the north, he fell a victim to Southern hate, and was foully assassinated; his remains were brought home and interred at College Farm Cemetery, north of Newton; and A. B., whose name appears at the head of this sketch.

KNIGHT, George F.; Grain merchant; Monroe; born in Hampden Co., Mass. in 1819; came west in 1854, and settled in Wapello Co, this State, where he was engaged in the drug and mercantile business a number of years. He moved to Monroe in 1874, and engaged in the grain trade; he is one of the firm known as the Monroe Elevator Company, which is composed of himself, LANGAN, WEEKS, and GIBSON; they endeavor to conduct their business in a manner that will commend them to the farmers everywhere; and judging by the business they do they are abundantly successful; they keep a full supply of farmer�s implements. Mr. KNIGHT married Miss Sarah Jane LANGAN in Wapello Co.; they have three children --Frank L., Warren M., and Willis A. Politically, he is a Republican. He is a friend to education and cheerfully aids any literary enterprise.

KODER, J.; Attorney at law; office, corner of Commercial and Washington streets; Monroe; was born March 14, 1836, in Ashland Co., Ohio; came to Iowa when only a little over 13 years of age; attended college at Pella, Marion Co., Iowa. Was married twice; had two children by first wife, and two by second wife. Was admitted to practice in Marion Co. in 1871, and was admitted to practice in the Federal Courts March 3, 1876, at Des Moines, IA, before Hon. J. F. Dillon. His first wife's name was Mary A. HART, who died in 1861. He was married to this second wife July 3, 1862. Her name was Artimisia E. HOWARD. He studied law with Hon. V. B. Bennett, and in 1869, in connection with his preceptor and H. . McCULLY, started the notorious Copperhead at Pella Marion Co. He was in later years engaged in the publication of the Des Moines Valley Herald at Monroe, taking that paper with a circulation of 150, and when he sold out to J. S. HARPER, of Ill., it had a circulation of nearly 800.

KODER, S.; was born Nov. 14, 1842, in Richland Co. Ohio, remaining there until the Fall of 1847, at which time his parents removed to Iowa, settling near Eddyville in Wapello Co.; remained there till the Fall of 1851, at which time they removed to Jasper Co., Iowa, remaining there but a few months, they removed to Red Rock Twp., Marion Co., Iowa. His mother still resides there, being a widow, having lost her husband June 5, 1871. S. KODER remained with his mother till the Spring of 1877; he at that time removed back to Jasper Co., Iowa. He was married March 8, 1876, at which time he was engaged in the study of law, under the tutelage of his brother, J. KODER, having been prior to that time, a farmer. Having come to this State when quite young, and not having the privileges of schools, he received only common school education; is consequently a self-made man.

He married Miss Frances E. TOAN in Springport, N.Y. They have three children --John T., Louis M., and Charles C.

LOAR, G. W.; M. D. and druggist; Monroe; born in Greene Co., Penn. in 1845. When about 20 years of age, he entered the Physicians� Medical Institute of Cincinnati, Ohio, from which school he graduated in 1868. He then went to Bloomington, Ill., and engaged in the practice of his profession there until October 1869. He then went to Leavenworth, Kansas, thence to Tecumseh, Nebraska, thence to Newton, this county, all in the Winter of 1869; practiced medicine in Newton until 1872; came to this city (Monroe) in May 1873. He married Miss Sarah FENNER in Newton in 1870. She was born in Highland Co., Ohio. They have two children living, Annie Myrtle, and Gertrude May; lost two, Martin and Effie. Dr. LOAR's drug store is on the south side of the public square.
He has a complete selection of drugs and medicines constantly on hand. He is a physician of several years practice, and therefore, is fully prepared to compound medicines with entire safety to his customers. The one thing to be desired more than all else in a drug store is a man to fill out prescriptions, that understands the nature of the compounds, this the citizens have in the person of Dr. LOAR.

Married Miss Nancy FINK in Virginia; they moved to Adams Co., Ill. in 1857, where they remained until about 1866, when they came to this county. They have ten children living. Mr. McCROSKEY owns 450 acres of land; is extensively engaged in buying and shipping stock. Politically, he acts with the Greenback Party.

McCUEN, W. W.; Farmer; Sec. 35; P.O. Monroe; born in Washington, Penn. Dec. 8, 1828; moved with his parents to Ashland Co., Ohio in 1835, where he married Miss Jane HILLBORNE Aug. 30, 1854. She was born in Westmoreland Co., Penn., Dec. 20, 1830. They moved to this county in 1858. They have had five children -- James W., died 9 years 6 months and 7 days; Mary E., married Jas. ROMANS; William E., Huldah J. and Ida M. Mr. McCUEN is a supporter of the Greenback Party. Himself and family are members of the M. E. Church, in which church he is one of the present Board of Trustees. He owns 400 acres of land, and is extensively engaged in stock raising.

McKEE, Samuel; Mason; Monroe; was born in the state of New York. When he was 2 years of age, his parents moved to Ohio, where he remained until the breaking-out of the war of the rebellion. He then enlisted in the 146th OH V. I.; was honorably discharged; came to this county in 1864. Married Miss Annie M. BAIN in Newton of this county in 1865. She was born in Washington Co., N.Y. in 1846. They have five children -- Frank E., born Aug. 17, 1866; Jennie V., Jan. 5, 1868; Katie, Dec. 25, 1870; Cora I., May 11, 1875; Florence O., April 23, 1878. Mrs. McKEE's father, Peter BAIN, was a native of New York. He was born Feb. 2, 1809; he married Miss J. McNEIL; they moved to this county in 1853. She was born July 16, 1811; she died in this county Dec. 19, 1860. He died April 23, 1875. He was a most prominent and worthy citizen; he raised a large family, several of whom are now living in this county. He was always an active and influential man, and during the war of the rebellion, he was ever ready to encourage and give aid to the cause of the Union.

MATEER, John; Farmer; Sec. 36; P.O. Monroe; born in Ireland in 1828; came to this country in 1849; lived in Pittsburgh, Penn. until 1853; he then went to New York and sailed to California where he followed mining with fair success until 1856; in the Fall of which year he returned to Pittsburgh, remaining until 1861, when he came to this county. He married Miss Ellen VINYARD, in this county, in 1868. She was born in Linn Co., this State, in 1846. They have three children --Arestine Sarah, Laura N. and Clemenza Edna. During the war of the rebellion, Mr. MATEER enlisted in Co. E, 40th Iowa V. I.; he was enrolled Aug. 12, 1862, and was honorably discharged Aug. 2, 1865. He was in several battles, among them being the siege of Vicksburg. There were two of Mrs. MATEER's brothers in the army, L. C. and Thomas J. VINYARD. L. C. enlisted in the 4th Iowa V. C.; he died in the service. Thomas J. also enlisted in an Indiana regiment; served three years and seven months and was honorably discharged. Their father William VINYARD, was a native of Virginia. He was born Nov. 24, 1811; came to Linn Co., this State, in 1830. Married Sarah CARROLL; she was born in Canada. They were married in Linn Co. in 1840; they moved to this county in 1865. He was ordained Deacon of the Missionary Baptist Church in Marion Co, this State; he died in this county Aug. 20, 1875. Mr. John MATEER and family are members of the United Presbyterian Church; he is a Republican in politics. Owns 200 acres of land.

MONLUX BROS. (G. W., D. A. and S. C. MONLUX), proprietors of the Jasper Flour Mills, and manufacturers of and dealers in flour, feed, corn meal, etc.; three blocks south of the square; Monroe. They are prepared to do all kinds of work in the milling line. They will give prompt attention to custom work, and will guarantee satisfaction to any and all who may call on them for work. These mills have been running over two years, at present writing, and they are now giving entire satisfaction in their work. They keep up with the times in all the latest improvements, and keep constantly running four run of buhrs; a corn sheller is attached to their mills, in which farmers can shell their corn while waiting for their grist. The flour made in these mills is being used in all the towns in the vicinity, and customers come from the vicinity of Newton and other mills to get their work done. The firm is composed of three members, as will be seen by the heading; two of them machiunists, and the other full of business. Their father, Samuel MONLUX, who is about the mills, is a practical millwright, and an old citizen of this county. They employ a first class miller, and run a first class flour-mill, and are as good a firm as the town affords. The MONLUX family are natives of Ohio; they came to this county in 1869.

They have every facility requisite for carrying on their business, each one of the firm is a master mechanic, and they have all the machinery that can be put to use. Their wagons are solid, durable and well finished. Their carriages and buggies have received premiums at the State and county fairs for elegance in finish, ease in running, lightness and strength. Their Eureka cultivator is a perfect triumph, and we have no hesitation in saying that it is the best cultivator manufactured. Their blacksmith and repair shop is always provided with good workmen, and always ready for work. Mr. J. MORRISON is one of the representative manufacturers of Central Iowa; his constant study in the improvement of his machinery and work, and he has developed many improvements beneficial to his interests and those of his customers.

ROMANS, W. G.; Retired Farmer; Monroe; one of the early settlers of this county; was a native of Warren Co., Ky.; he was born in 1816. In 1837, he went to Illinois, thence to Mahaska Co., this State, in 1846, where he remained until 1850, when he moved to this county. He has been married twice. His first wife was Miss M. J. MILLER; she was born in Kentucky in 1818, and died in this county in 1859. His present wife was Lucy M. FULLER; they were married in this county; she was born in New York. Mr. ROMANS owns a half section of land. Is Republican in politics. Has been a member of County Board of Supervisors two terms; Justice of the Peace and Township Trustee two or three terms. Had one son in the army, who served in the 5th I. V. I. three years, and was honorably discharged. Mr. ROMANS and wife are members of the M. E. church, in which he is one of the Trustees and class leaders.
