his parents to Connecticut; lived there about eighteen years; thence to Peoria

on an average about thirty acres of corn, nine acres of oats, nine acres of
wheat, turns off forty head of hogs yearly; raises some very fine hogs and has
one of the best hog houses in the township; has a good farm near market and is

Married Lydia Ann VERTNER; she was born in Champaign Co., Ohio, July 4,
1826; had eight children, four of whom are living�Asenath E. (now Mrs. J.
PATCHEN), John V., David H. and Zula May. Emigrated
with his parents to Schuyler Co., Ill., in 1835; lived there eighteen years;
thence to Henry Co., Ill., in 1853, where he lived twelve years; thence to
Jasper Co. Enlisted in 1862 in Co. D, 112th Reg. I. V.; was in several
skirmishes; was in the battle of Knoxville, where he was wounded in the arm with

Alice PRUNDRELL; she was born in Leicestershire, England, Nov. 5, 1816; mother
of nine children�Eleza Ann, John, Sarah, Alice, Charles, Mary, Mattie and
Emma; emigrated to this country in 1849, to Trenton, N. J.; lived there nine
years, thence to Peoria Co., Ill., lived there seven years, thence to Jasper
Co., in 1865; came with teams from Illinois; camped out; when they arrived had
to live in wagons five weeks, until he built a shanty; put up a frame building;
was almost impossible for him to get lumber; went to Pella for a load, which
cost him $50 for 1000 feet of common rough boards; built his house the same year
he came here; had to live in it the first Winter without plastering; cracks got
so large from shrinkage that he had to calk them with rags to keep snow from
blowing through; could cross the prairie from here to Prairie City without
striking a fence; had when he got here six horses, three wagons and $800; has
raised thirty bushels of wheat on an acre, probably as large or the largest ever
raised on the prairie; has broken more prairie than any man in the township. There was one store in the city kept by J. BUTTERS.

from Ohio direct to this county, where he has resided since. Mr. B. came here with limited means, and by his own exertions
has accumulated a fine property, and is one of the sound men of the county.
Has one of the finest brick dwelling-houses in this Township, well

Jasper Co., and stopped near Vandalia; was in Polk and Boone Co., a short time;
came in here in 1852; had to go twelve miles to get their milling; has been to
Oskaloosa, forty miles; Prairie City or Monroe was not known at the time he
arrived here; Monroe was called Tool�s Point at that time; did his trading at
Des Moines; came here a very poor man with a family of small children, no money,
nothing to battle against the hardships of a new country, but a good

years; thence to Jasper Co., Iowa; came through from Illinois with teams and was
nine days making the trip; at that time Prairie City was not thought of.
Mrs. CUSHMAN is cousin to Pitt KELLOGG, Ex-Governor of Louisiana.
Has hauled wheat from here to Oskaloosa, and sold it for 44 cents a
bushel; moved into a little shanty 16 x 16; down by the grove, with two families
besides his own, nine persons in all, where they lived six weeks, until he built
a shanty on his own land; the occupants were C. C. KELLOGG, D. C. KELLOGG, with
families, and himself and family. CURLEY,

from Ohio to Benton Co., Ind.; lived there four years; from there to Mahaska
Co., Iowa; lived there one and a half years, thence to Jasper Co., where he has
resided since; came through with teams and camped out on land on the place where
Mr. H. PATCHEN now lives; for milling he used to go to Red Rock, twenty miles;
came to this State a poor man, but by industry and economy has made himself and
family a fine home; has one of the best farm houses in the township, and is

enlisted on the 24th of Sept., 1861, in Co. E, 14th I. V.
I., and was in the battles of Fort Donelson and Pittsburg Landing; was taken

belong to the M. E. Church. Emigrated
from Ohio to Kane Co., Ill.; lived there one year, thence to Jasper Co., Iowa,
where he has resided since. Enlisted
in the 6th Ohio V. C. in 1863, and served during the war; was in the
battles of Wilderness, defense of Washington, Hatch�s Run, Va., Dec. 9th
and 10th in 1864; Hatch�s Run, Feb. 5 and 6, 1865; Boydton Plank
Road, Dec. 1, 1864; Fort Steadman, March 25, 1865; Silver Creek, April 6, 1865;
Farmville, April 7, 1865; Appomattox Court House, April 9, 1865.
Mr. DeWOLF is one of the Directors of the Citizens Bank, and one of the

J., November 22, 1851; Isadoria E. S., April 10, 1855; Lemuel C., May 17, 1857;
E. Hartsell, Jan. 18, 1860; Lucella C., April 19, 1862; Minnie M., April 20,
1864. Mrs. D. died June 14, 1876.
Two little boys died in infancy; Mary E., born April 1, 1866, and died
August 15, 1866. Mr. D. emigrated
from Ohio to Scott Co., Iowa, in 1845; lived there twenty-one years; thence to
Story Co., Iowa, lived there one year; thence to Jasper Co., where he has
resided since. Bought his land with
some improvements, a few acres broken. It
is now all under the best of cultivation; has a fine grove planted by his own
hands, from forty to fifty feet high; has a fine orchard of 700 trees;
twenty-five cherry trees; 500 grape vines, and a variety of small fruit.
Mr. D. was drafted, but was refused on account of disability.
Has a fine farm near town and railroad depot, and is in comfortable

H. C.; Farmer; Sec. 33; P. O. Vandalia; born in Indiana March 3, 1844; came to
this county in 1871; his wife, Pircilla SMITH, was born in Iowa ion 1850.
Married Dec. 9, 1859; had three children�Willard Wallace, Leroy and
Martha Pircilla. Mrs. DOWNEY died

His wife, Nancy MEANS, was born in Rockingham Co., N. C., Feb. 2, 1815,
and they were married March 2, 1833, and have five children�Ira Ellis, born
Jan. 4, 1834; Fountin M., Feb. 18, 1836; Celia M., July 17, 1838; John J., June
20, 1844; Eliza J., Jan. 26, 1854. Mr.
DRAPER has been School Director and Road Supervisor, etc.
