CENSUS AND CENSUS SUBSTITUTES
About Irish Census records:
8-The first Irish census to survive intact is 1901. This is available
at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.
1901 and
1911
Census of Ireland: The National Archives of Ireland census website
has been updated to provide new search options for the 1911 census, including:
Relation to Head of Household, Literacy, Occuptation, Marital Status,
County/Country of Origin, Language Proficiency, Specified Illnesses, Number
of Years Married, Number of Children Born, and Number of Children Living.
All thirty-two counties for 1911 are now available on the site. :

Earlier Irish census records were largely destroyed by fire in Dublin in 1922. There are fragments which have been transcribed by genealogists but these include only a very small amount of the original records. The best known Irish census substitute is Griffith's Valuations which was a listing of who the renters were and who owned the property. It was begun about 1848.

Valuation
Revision Books: From PRONI. These are the
continuation records of the original Griffiths Valuation (1847 - 1864), and
use the same plot numbers and townlands. You can use these records to see
when someone acquired or disposed of a property, when they died (eg theoccupant
will change to "reps of."), plus other changes such as purchase. Covered
are counties Antrim, Armagh, Down,Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone between
the years 1864 to 1933.
9- Griffith's
Valuation on "Ask About Ireland" ( between 1848
and 1864)...I'm told the spelling has to be letter perfect on this
search engine...but it is an excellent source.
Tithe
Applotment on Ancestry: Information from the Tithe Books
has been extracted and the have been indexed in this data set. Only
the six counties that constitute present-day Northern Ireland – Antrim,
Armagh, Derry, Down, Fermanagh, and Tyrone, covering 223 parishes, are
included. If you find an ancestor among the nearly 200,000 listed, you will
learn the following:Name, County, Parish, Townland, Year of Enumeration

Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom.
The British Isles consist of Great Britain and Ireland
(plus many small islands around the coast of both.)
Great Britain is politically divided into England, Scotland
and Wales.Ireland is politically divided into Republic of Ireland (used to
be Irish Free State or Eire) and Northern Ireland.
UK is United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, ruled
from Westminster and regional parliaments and with Queen Elizabeth II as
monarch.
The Republic of Ireland is now an independent, foreign country to
the UK with its own president and parliament.
Historically Ireland is divided into four provinces; Leinster, Munster, Connought
and Ulster. Ulster comprises nine counties of which
three are in the Republic of Ireland and six in Northern
Ireland.
IRISH PROVINCES:
LEINSTER: Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois
(Leix/Queen's),Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly (King's Co.), Westmeath, Wexford
and Wicklow.
MUNSTER: Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, and
Waterford.
ULSTER: Divided in two sections --
(1) Northern Ireland : Antrim, Armagh, Derry/Londonderry, Down,

Ireland: The earliest records date back to the 13th century
(wills) and include several important collections from the 18th century (The
Elphin Census 1749 and the 1798 Rebellion records). The collection includes
the exclusive publication of the Landed Estates Court records, a crucial
resource for the mid- to late-19th century, which includes details of over
500,000 tenants on Irish estates.

How to Join a Mailing List
To subscribe to a LOCALITY mailing list:
Scroll down to Find a Mailing List
Type in the locality…usually a county, but large cities may have their own list….
Example: Weber (Weber county) Essex (England or Ontario) etc
Click on FIND
It will bring up a list of all those localities in the world; click on the one you want
The Page that comes up is the page for information and instructions of that Mailing List
Now to subscribe to the list: the following is just an example............
IN THE MEANTIME......scroll down to "Search the Archives" at the bottom of the information page of the mailing.
Use this Archive search by putting key words in the "Subject" or "body" and browse through messages that have been posted earlier..
You will now see this in your e-mail:
Note the address at the top: it must contain the word "request"
The subject line must contain the word "subscribe"
NOTE: Subscribe does not mean send money. It is just a way of becoming a member of the list.
Click on SEND
In a minute or 2 you will receive a message that gives you a link to click on to CONFIRM that you want to subscribe to the list. An example:
To confirm that you want to be subscribed to this mailing list, click on the link that you are sent.
CLICK ON THIS LINK
In a minute or 2 you will receive a message that WELCOMES you to the mailing list. If you are new to this, keep this letter so you can refer to it later. It will give you instructions.
You are now on the list and messages will start coming into your INBOX….they are for anyone and everyone on the list. Take a little time to note how these messages are posted before you begin with your own query.
To post your own query, use the address that is shown in your WELCOME letter:
(example) [email protected] (notice the word "request" is NOT in the address for posting your own query)
In the subject line: put the NAME of the person you are seeking, or other appropriate subject. Examples:

But when it comes time to POST your own query, put the LOCALITY in the subject line….

2. Unsubscribing From The List
To unsubscribe from the list, send a new message to:

the command UNSUBSCRIBE and no additional text.

4. Going On Holiday
If you are going to be away for a while, and will not be able to download mail, then you are advised to UNSUBSCRIBE from the list before you go, and SUBSCRIBE again when you return.

5. Sending Messages To The List
If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to [email protected] . It will then be sent on to everyone who is subscribed to the list.
Messages to the list can only be sent if you are currently subscribed.
MAILING LIST NETIQUETTE:
· Make sure that your postings have a meaningful subject line
o Good Example: Bridget ENRIGHT b. abt 1820 in Ballybunion
· Don't use deceptive subject lines that you think may help attract attention
o Bad example: Need help, please!!!!
· Don't use all caps. It's like SHOUTING to the other listers. Write like you normally do.
· Make your "query" short and to the point. Put surnames in caps: Bridget ENRIGHT
· Don't use inflammatory remarks. This is called "flaming"
· Don't send attachments (pictures or otherwise) or to the list.
SOME SUGGESTIONS
· Before you post your first "query," read some of the posts of others to get an idea of what you need to do.
· On Locality mailing lists especially, stay subscribed long enough to learn from others about the area you are researching. Watch for people who are offering "lookups" from sources that are available to them.
· Most people who will help you are volunteers and will not charge you for sharing or looking up information. But never expect others to pay for any copying/mailing expenses.
· The more lists you are on, the more chance you have of getting responses.
· Remember to "unsubscribe" when you go on vacation, if you don't want messages to pile up in you "inbox."
