In May, 2000, and in May, 2002, John and Eleanor Blankenbaker traveled to Germany and Austria to visit villages from which our Germanna ancestors immigrated.  This page contains photos taken in Heidelberg, Germany.
(Each photo is labeled for the month & year it was taken.)
(If the photos don't load at first, click the "Reload" or "Refresh" button in the icon bar of your web browser until they all show up.)

(Do not "save" the "Thumbnail", as you will get a very small, unusable picture.)

Photos of Heidelberg, Germany

A part of Heidelberg Castle that is in ruins. A little work will be needed before you move in.

Heidelberg Castle has never been the same since the French came for a visit in the late Seventeenth Century.

Heidelberg at Night
(May, 2000)

Heidelberg Castle is lighted at night to the great joy of the tourists and inhabitants.

View from Castle
(May, 2000)

This is the old city of Heidelberg as seen from the castle. It gets crowded down there when the tourists hit the town. The Neckar River flows from the right, diagonally to the middle. Many of our people would have had a view from the river as they passed by, except that the city was being rebuilt after being burned down by the French. In the distance is Mannheim, where the Neckar flows into the Rhine River.

"Small" Wine Vat

Small Wine Vat
(May, 2000)

The Germans call the wine vat in the background the Kleine, or small, one. (They sometimes exaggerate.) (I suppose the one to the right would be called the "wee" or "tiny" one?)

(File size:  725 X 591,  88,648 Bytes)

"Large" Wine Vat

Large Wine Vat
(May, 2000)

The small wine vat above was called small by comparison to this one. This wine vat is bigger than some of the ships bringing our ancestors to America!

City of Heidelberg and Castle

This is a view of the city of Heidelberg with the Castle in the background.  There are 4 different sizes of this photo.  Click on whichever size you can view best on your monitor.  The largest one, 1600 x 1200, has the best resolution and definition; it was the original and the others were made by reducing its size, which made the smaller ones less sharp (fuzzier); if you want to print the photo, download the 1600 x 1200 file and print to fit the size paper you are using.

(This photo was not taken by John & Eleanor, but it is such a great shot of Heidelberg I though it belonged with their pictures.)
