This is a picture of the Gemmingen Church. The Peter Weaver,
Michael Clore, Michael Smith, and Matthew Smith families immigrated from Gemmingen in July 1717, as attested to in the Death Register, kept by the pastor of the church. He wrote that they were leaving for Pennsylvania on this date.
The church in Gemmingen was damaged during WWII, probably by
machine gun bullets. They have not repaired the damage but left the
evidence with the date of 4 April 1945 as a memorial.
Though we have probably cousins in this cemetery, I include the
photo to show the loving care which is lavished on their cemeteries. Many people probably grow more flowers in the cemetery plots than in at home. Working at, and meeting people in, the cemetery is a social activity, where one meets other citizens of the town.; Each of these plots is a short term, perhaps thirty years, rental and then the site is reused.
I am a sucker for date stones which are historical evidence. The
writing style is a bit unusual. (If memory serves me correctly, this came from the church.)
