Transcript of the will of Thomas Wyton of Hook Norton, 1546. It is thought that he was the Great Grandfather of James Whiton (1624-1710). This will was sent to the Whiton Family Assoc. by Eric Weil. His mother, Barbara Weil, wrote to England for it.
"In the name of God so be it the iiith day of maii in the yere of our lorde 1546 I Thomas Witon of Hooknorton being sick in bodye neverthelesse perfect in the faith of our savior Jesu chryst and of good memorie make my last wyll and Testament after this maner wyse fyrtst I bequeth my sowle to allmyghtie god to his most blessed mother marie the virgin and to all the sayntes and my bodye to be buryed in the church yarde of the paryshe of Hooknorton further I bequeth to the mother church of Oxfordshire iiiid Allso I bequeth to the honor of the blessed sacrament in Hooknorton xiiid Allso I bequeth to the mayntenaunce of the roode light iiid finally I bequeth to the bells there iiiid The resydew of all my goodes I gyve and bequeth to Agnes my wyffe whome I ordeyne and make my solde executrix to dispose all my goodes at her discretion provided allways that my chyldren have their portions of my goodes accordyng as their mother shall se cause these persons being wytnesse Thomas Glase Maryon Wylkins with other."

Transcript of the will of Thomas Wyton of Hook Norton, 9 Sep 1637. It is thought that he was the Father of James Whiton (1624-1710). This will was sent to the Whiton Family Assoc. by Eric Weil. His mother, Barbara Weil, wrote to England for it.
"In the name of the most holy Trinitie: I Thomas Wyton of Hook Norton in the county of Oxfordshire, husbandman, considering the frailty of man's life, being weake in body, but in perfect minde and memory thankes be to God, do constitute ordaine and make this my last will and testament in maner and forme following upon the nineteenth day of September in the yeare of our Lord God 1636. Imprimis I give unto John Wyton my sonne the bedstid over the hall, and one ewe and lambe to be delivered to him within one yeare after my decease. ITEM. I give to my sonne Thomas Wyton fourty shillinges to be payed within one yeare after my decease. ITEM. I give to my sonne Richard Wyton fourty shillinges to be payd within one yeare after my decease. ITEM. I give to my sonne William Wyton six poundes to be payd him at the time that he shall be of the age of one and twenty yeares. ITEM. I give to my sonne James Witon five poundes to be payed him when he shall come to one and twenty yeares of age. ITEM. I give my daughter Allice Wyton the greate pot, and to his daughter the warming pan and a sheepe. ITEM. Note: The following information from the Whiton Family in America (1932) is now thought to be incorrect after the discovery of the above will of Thomas WYTON in Hook Norton, England. James WHITON (1624-1710) did collect a legacy from Hook Norton.
The following paragraphs describe a Thomas WHITTON who arrived in Plymouth in 1635. It is not known at this time if he was related in some way to James WHITON (1624-1710).
Thomas WHITON settled in Old Plymouth in 1637 (which was settled first in 1620), where he was granted seven acres of land, and his name appears as a Proprietor in 1638. This would indicate that he was a man of character and influence, as land was only given to men of that type, and the proprietors had the power of confirming all grants or purchases from the Indians. On account of fear of Indian raids, these grants were small in size and contiguous. In 1644 he bought of Edward Edwards a house and two acres of land for nine pounds, two shillings and six pence. It does not appear that there were any children by his marriage to Wynyfride; and in 1643, they adopted Sarah Hopkins, aged six years, "until she should become twenty," agreeing "to be a father and mother to her, to instruct her in sewing, and to find meat, drink, apparel and lodging." If she married before she was twenty, Thomas was to be paid for the remaining time as shall be judged just by two "indifferent" persons. It is conjectured that Sarah was a sister or niece of Oceanus Hopkins, who was born at sea on the Mayflower. In 1649 they adopted Jeremiah Smith, aged four years.

4. James WHITON. Born 20 Mar 1624 in Hook Norton, Oxfordshire, England. Died 26 Apr 1710 in Hingham, Massachusetts. Buried in Hingham, Massachusetts. Occupation Town Constable.
From "The Whiton Family in America": After arriving in America, James WHITON lived with his father (note: this is probably not correct) in Plymouth, Massachusetts until twenty-one years of age, when he moved with others to effect a settlement at Lancaster, Massachusetts where he signed the covenant entered into by the original settlers. Two years later he moved to Hingham, Massachusetts. The early name of Hingham was Bare Cove, so called because it was bare or open to the tide. Later, it was called Over The River, and subsequently Liberty Plain and South Hingham. Here James settled and married Mary, daughter of John and Nazareth (Hobart) Beal in 1647, she being then 25 years of age. On October 6, 1647, he gave a Letter of Attorney to Richard Betscomb, of Hingham to collect a legacy of property in Hook Norton from the estate of Thomas Whiton. He took the oath of freeman in 1660. In 1676 his home was burned by the Indians, led by Chief Philip of the Pokanoket Tribe, to meet the attacks of whom the men residents of Hingham were impressed into service. He served as Town Constable, in Hingham, an office at that time of dignity and importance. He was a farmer and possessed of considerable real estate, for the records show him to have been one of the largest taxpayers in Hingham. He also owned land in Scituate, Abington, Hanover and other places. He was prominent in securing the erection of the Old Ship Church in Hingham, which is still standing, and to the building fund of which he donated fifty pounds, a large sum in those days. In his will, dated 29 Sep 1708, he provides liberally for his children and grandchildren; mentions three sons and one daughter then living, also seven grandchildren "who are the issue of my son Thomas Witon, deceased." In this instrument his name is written "James Witon;" although several of his children were baptised by the surname Whiting. In 1657 he received a grant of land from the town, and at subsequent dates other lots of meadow and upland. "Apr. 20, 1676, the houses of Joseph Jones, Anthony Sprague, Israel Hobart, Nathaniel Chubbuck and James Whiton were burned by the Indians." ®81
He died April 26, 1710 and his wife in 1696. Both are buried in Hingham. He married Mary BEAL, daughter of John BEAL & Nazareth HOBART (HUBBARD), 30 Dec 1647 in Hingham, Massachusetts. James resided near his father's home at Liberty Plain, South Hingham. He was a farmer and also had a cooperage business, making what was known as Hingham Tubs. He was said to have been an industrious man, quiet, unobtrusive and well respected, and served in King Philip's War. With his children began the first migration; some of them removing to Plympton, Hanover and other adjacent towns and others to Connecticut. He married Abigail RICKARD, daughter of Giles RICKARD II & Hannah DUNHAM, 1676 in Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts. Born 1655 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Died 4 May 1740 in Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts. They had the following children:

7. Matthew WHITON. In the Hingham Records, Matthew spelled his name Whyton. He was a large landholder, and engaged in the business of coopering manufacturing "Hingham Buckets" then well known throughout the settled part of the state. He spelled Whiton "Whyton". He died intestate, 22 Jul 1725 in 72nd year. He was a "cooper" and a constable in 1701. He resided on South St., West Hingham and on Main Street, near Tower's Bridge. ®81 He married Deborah PITTS, daughter of Edmund PITTS & Ann HOWARD, 27 Dec 1677 in Hingham, Massachusetts.
